The fact that the Steel has the same armour, hard points and components as the black makes it a laughable price for the ship. It’s quite literally a Steal and CIG massively overpriced it. They missed a trick giving it some utility for the Siege of Orison too. It’s a largely pointless ship with no versatility as the back space is taken up with guns and drop seats that largely don’t get used. Poor man’s Valkyrie.

Good video. My org specializes in FPS and hot drops, so initially we were really excited when the Cutty Steal [name mistake deliberate] came out, however we very quickly became disappointed in it following field tests. We opted to stick with our tried and tested Valkyries, Hoplites and Prowlers instead, IF the cutty steel was to gain another S2 shield then we'd consider having one in the roster.

Hey! I may be late to the party but what org are you in ? I’m very much so interested the fps combat gameplay
Normally when I comment on a Farrister video it's in-character, but the Cutlass Steel is one where I break from that conformity. As far as opinions go, I'm going to state this: Not only is the Cutlass Steel a GOOD ship in its intended GAME role, it's almost an essential one. You see, back when the Cutlass Steel came out, there were no wreckage settlements or the like on MicroTech, and no mechanics in place for NPC's to arrive via a dropship and jump out to reinforce ground troops. At the time it was a laughably poor counterpart to the other dropships and gunships in game, as well, regardless of which one you chose. But my thought at the time was, "I sure would hate to go up against a Valkyrie, Prowler, or Hoplite in a ground-combat situation", and speculated then that the Cutlass Steel wasn't really MEANT for player hands, though it might easily fall into them. I think it was meant, all along, to be the ship that dropped off NPC reinforcements -- and that's what it's ended up as, for the most part. And for this role, in a game perspective, it's extremely good. Not, mind you, in a performance sense -- but in a PvE challenge sense - it has enough weapons to be a threat when it appears, and can easily carry enough troops to ruin a ground combat if it's allowed to either touch down and drop off soldiers, or hover overhead as a gun platform, or both. But it's also tender enough that a small group, or a prepared soloist, can deal with it -- and a prepared group with a CAP in place not only can deal with it easily, but those pilots can actually enjoy providing top cover while the grunts have all the fun. It also makes a little more sense for the Cutlass Steel to be chosen for this role over the other ships. Anvil Valkyries are certainly in civilian and pirate hands, but a Valk might be too much for a small group to handle as a reinforcement ship, considering its extra defenses. A Hoplite might be a good choice, too, but it doesn't really have the room to drop off enough soldiers to change the dynamics on the ground. And considering they're supposed to be rare and unique, a Prowler doesn't make sense appearing any time a bunch of squatters call the Nine Tails for help. So, there you have it: There are really very few players who are going to choose a Cutlass Steel over something else - but the money you spent on your Cutlass Steel didn't fund the dev work on it. It was already done when it went up for sale -- it was and is for sale because there's no reason for it NOT to be, and sure, it's going to float someone's boat perfectly. But the Cutlass Steel is, and always was, meant to be a ship primarily piloted and used by NPC enemies. And in that respect, it does just fine.

For a player ship it’s just too pricey but for an NPC ship… imagine a mission in the future where a group of players defend from pirates. If air support can take the steel reinforcements out before landing, it makes the fps players jobs easier. If not, they have 25 more pirates to deal with. Could be fun gameplay.

Great video! Keep in mind though that the Cutty Steel is equivalent to a real world military troop transport helicopter such as a Chinook, Blackhawk, or Huey. These have very little or typically no armor (shields) and can be kitted with machine guns at all the odd angles. They rely primarily on stealth, speed, and cover from other units such as C-130 and Apache gunships nearby for safety. They do not use their guns for air to air engagements with other ships unless things have gone really wrong and they have no other choice, they use their guns for suppressing enemies on the ground as they are performing the infil and exfil portions of their mission at the LZ. I think too many players are trying to take how they use their Cutty Blacks and Blues and apply the same principles to how they use the Cutty Steel and that will likely get your whole ship killed.

Hey there Farrister. Very nice review of the Cutlass Steel. It is a nice ship for it's class. I've loved the Cutlass for years, and even have a couple of them. I have a Black and a Red. As far as it being a drop ship, I think I prefer the Valkyrie over the Steel. I know it's bigger, but with that being said, it has the capability of transporting a couple vehicles with the 20 troops it has seats for. It also has both a top and bottom turrets, as well as two remote turrets, and two door gunner positions. So it is comparably armed. If you need a ramp gunner, you can always position troops back there to throw the monkey wrench on someone following. Rail guns are perfect for that. Also, it doesn't have missiles either. If I need them, I'll put a rover back there with missiles mounted, that can fire out of the open ramp. I know the Valk is more expensive, but it came out first and it does everything and more than the Steel, and it can hold cargo if needed. Take care my friend, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.
@Farrister

I like that the Valkyrie can bring a small vehicle too, makes it feel more useful?
Quick question, would you be able to put one of the smaller or smallest vehicles in the back? Please let me know
I guess if your Bic runs out and you need to light a couple of giant cigarettes, you can use the giant car-type lighters on the back of the Cutlass. Bad jokes aside, I wish they'd kept the color name thing. They could have called it the Cutlass Brown. That's what the pilot's trousers would be when he realizes that he and a dozen orgmates in the back are gonna be in gowns very shortly. 😄

The Steel is acceptable for in-game price. I'd still rather have the Black for better versatility but there is a market for a specialized version. Even if it has serious issues it's still the cheapest dropship we currently have. Out of game pricing was a blunder from CIG. I would have considered around the price of the Red to be the fair but a 100 more? No chance.

Agreed!
One of the issues not mentioned with the door guns is a lack of targeting or sensor capability. That means, then, that a door gunner would have to be looking in exactly the right direction to get a snap shot off on a passing enemy ship. That's not to say that they're useless; they're perfect to support a ground advance. Just in a space engagement, they are by and large useless. The other issues we encountered (runaway guns and getting knocked down/off the gun) will be fixed, but I highly doubt sensor capability will be added to the door guns.
@Farrister
Жыл бұрын
Where we're going Ogi, you don't need targeting computers...
On the turrets, obviously the door turrets weren't meant for ship-to-ship combat. But the rear turret, Albeit a situational one, does ensure that there is almost no blindspot on this ship. So with a crew of three you get a cheap medium fighter with a firing arc that covers almost every approach making it hard to continously engage for small fighters. Not too shabby.
@Farrister
Жыл бұрын
Sadly small fighters just run rings around it, the coverage might be good, but effectively keeping gunners on a fast target is more difficult... Especially with the weak-ish shields

@@Farrister I imagine a ship based on the Aurora Frame. Borealis. It'd be an aurora with a bigger rear end. Different variants. The base model would haul more cargo. A Pathfinder model with improved living amenities and jump range. And a military model with door guns mounted on the airlock entrances on each side. ( could be slaved forward for pilot control if not manned ) Four drops seats in the back with a quick deploy option. It's airlock for space. But then seats optionally rotate for a quick jump out similar to riding the Skids on a Little Bird. Add high capacity rocket pods for CAS and now we're talking. Having so many seats seems like overkill. But it might be useful in the future for say, a mission where you need to rescue hostages on foot and provide for them an escape. The steel also seems smaller to me than the valkyrie, so that could help for a mission where you don't have as much room to land. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the Steel, I just think it might fill a useful role in the future.

I'll happily revisit the review at that point :)
I think the cutlass steel's role is for NPC usage in PVE encounters. It's the perfect ship to fly in reinforcements when the player raids a bunker. I honestly don't see the point in drop ships unless the player can hire NPC troops or NPCs will use them in encounters. Players could rp something if they want, but practically is better to just have two or more ships. Multicrew ships aren't that great practically yet. You can just think of the hammerhead. It's currently the premier military ship available to players, but the 8 or so players it takes to crew fully wouldn't beat 8 ish players in separate ships. Organizations aren't lacking in funds. They don't have unlimited money, but the biggest limitation is most likely going to be manpower. Once NPC crews become a thing, large ships will become much more dominant. Capital ships will truly command respect in combat. If you want to do a large ish pvp combat, right now, both sides are most likely bringing 4 to 6 fighters and 2 to 4 gunships. Once NPC crews become a thing, you'll start to see a rock paper scissors compilation. Having 8 hammer heads that can cover each other's blind spots would shred smaller ships to pieces. The other team would want to bring in some missile ships or bombers to destroy the hammerheads from far off. The hammerhead team now needs to dedicate some players to interceptors/light fighters to avoid the missiles and close the distance quickly with the bombers to take them out. The bombers now need hammerheads or other flak ships to ward off the fighters. If you can get NPC pilots, that opens up a whole new front. Right now, the idris (not including the javelin) is the top dog of the large ships planned for player ownership. The kraken is really cool, but it doesn't have the same direct firepower as the idris. That changes if you more snub (cheap) ships are introduced and NPC pilots become a thing. The kraken doesn't really need to transport buccaneers or cutlasses in system as they all can jump. Snub ships are really small and cheap. Imagine a kraken deploying 16 ish merlin type ships. That could be overwhelming. Player controlled NPC crews and pilots would have a major impact on the game and I think it would be epic.
Can't wait until they fix the flight bugs....love the layout of the steel over most other dropships.

Well it’s a dropship that gives the pilot at least good firepower. Drake should have by lore more armor. But yeah it’s not ingame yet. (As many things) the valk is actually good when fully crewed but is also an easy target compared.

Жыл бұрын
Well I guess time will tell if that holds true or not!
literally would be the perfect ship if they would just get rid of the seats and open up the center as a cargo/vehicle hauler...would turn it into an upgraded cutlass black essentially
Now contrery to I guess most people (after a quick look at the comments) I absolutely love the Space Huey. But it might have something to do with the fact that I knew from the beginning that this was never meant to be an assault troop transport, ala the Valkyrie or the Legionnaire. This is, and was always intended to be, a space-capable helicopter analog (hence Space Huey, though Chinook might be a closer comparison), that is supposed to get as many sorry buggers from point A to point B with as little cost as possible, seeing as this is just another Cutty. And the door guns? They're on par with a sternly worded letter letting the opposition know that they may wish to keep their heads down for the duration of the Steel's stay in their local area, while the crew gives a nice boot shped imprint on the arse plate of the departing morons. And hope that you don't need them on the possible exfil stretch, as then things might get a tad bit too interesting. I think the Steal... I mean Steel is a little bit of a victim of the CIG Marketing Department in this case, as it sure was sold with this "assault troop transport" look, when it's clearly not. It is a trasnport, but it's not meant to be anywhere near any actual considerable enemy presence. And personally, I'm kind of curious to see what it can do in a more civilian role anyway. Imagine you have a work crew or a bunch settlers you need to get to a new outpost, that is pretty big but not really big enough to warrant something like a Valkyrie or even a Liberator, and a Prowler would just be silly to waste on something like this. So here comes the Cutty Steel, providing you with a healthy number of seats for just this sort of thing. Though you might still want to ensure that all of the passengers have a space suit on, or that you only fly in atmo, since this thing is also missing any kind of additional life support... but hey. At least you get there. Mostly, it is still just a Cutty, after all. Yes, it is stupid in more ways than one, it's not what the adverts told you it is, but I still absolutely adore it. It's just one of those fun ships, that also help flesh out the 'Verse in it own way. No justifying the price tag though, other than my conspiracy theory that it's CIG's way of trying to maintain some level of rarity on some ships. Think of it like the "Alien tax", but for non-alien ships.

I guess the ingame price is fair, but way over $200 is ridiculous for a ship that has basically no use in the current state of the game as it's outperformed by pretty much any other dropship. Also the pricing scheme here is kinda weird given that the much more versatile cutty black only costs $120. Imo they should buff the steel by giving it a second shield gen and larger gun hardpoints to make it more competetive and justify the higher price.

Filling this ship (or any dropship will need a 4th or 3rd of total players in the game. I cannot see the point of massive dropships just yet. They look and feel absolutley cool, but so far the prowler is the most sensible dropship going in as a small tactical covert team. ...once stealth works again. Other than that, It's worth the ingame money if dropshipping is what you want to do. But it's small, so why fill it up with so many players? Have less seats and a place for a small vehicle. This is a clowncar right now and it shouldn't be. I was hoping for a smaller version of the Valkyrie. Also, no Toilet. In other news, I have brought back my Mug from work. I'm quitting. So much workload, getting worse by ever increasing Business but Receeding workforce, because the company only want's the best people for meager wagers. Me as branch manager onle get about 170€ more than the lowest employee. It's not worth it, so I'm starting at a small "casino game house" (touchscreen mashines where you lose money like slot mashines). I already get paid more and they're already planning to make me second manager. a good bit more money, more regular free time and the workload of only one person, not 2,5... love the Branch, love my collegues (will miss them dearly) but no job is worth having burn out for. I I didn't stop working, cannot abandon my team. but yeah, better paying work, normal hours... looking forward to it

Ah sorry to hear that, was really hoping the branch manager was a good move up. There are some companies that do that here too (especially retail supermarkets). Hope the new job works out better!

@@Farrister It will work out better, less stress, more time off and same money. So nothing to be sorry about 🙂 I'm really going to miss my freinds there, though. It's for them, that I stayed all this time. But Burn-out really sucks and they all agree, that I should go to a better employer.
The redeemer is a gunship...not a dropship...

Oooh, yes, quite possibly. But it does have those dropship style seats
Imo this should be priced way less than what it is at now. True, specialist things in the real world get more expensive but that really shouldn’t translate to the game. I don’t ever see myself buying this in game even.

Agreed!
I don't know what it is about the Cutlass Steel, but I'm a big fan. The idea is great, the design ok, but the execution.. it's NOT great. The Shield is the problem. If you want a ship to have 20+ and STILL be safe, IT NEEDS A SIZE 3 SHIELD. Either that or half the amount of seats and ADD another size 2 shield, to make it more balanced?
@Farrister

One of the few, I think :) Another shield would give it a good reason to be different
@razalin

@@Farrister 1 more size 2 shield would make more sense from a Drake point of view. A size 3 would be a stretch for Drake. lol. You never know, apparently there is a rework happening for the black? So I hope the Steel gets a proper rebalance, as well.
The Cutlass Steal is very dissapointing. The €/$ price is absurd. It needs a second S2 shield. And the seats shouldn't blocking the whole compartement. With two shields and place for 1-2 Cyclone (and a few less drop seats) it would be a good dropship.

Yeah, it's wild. Agree with all of your comments!
It's for NPCs. We can buy one if we want, but it was clearly designed for NPCs.
@Farrister

Well that's certainly a much better use case!
It's the best way to kill 23 people at one time. A ship with one medium shield. 😆 And of course those ballistic guns have infinite ammo! CIG wasn't going to hamper sales with loading the ship with guns that have 6 seconds of continual fire and then run out of ammo! In my opinion it's a stupid ship. I would rather carry the same number of people in a fleet of Pisces!

haha yup...
I almost spit out my tea hearing the Redeemer as a dropship - there is no way you are deploying people down that ladder. Hoplite is a better dropship - Redeemer is more a gunship IMO

Well you already build credibility by drinking tea. But it does have those troop chairs upstairs, is what I mean xD

Haha - tea credibility is a certainty and agreed it does...I just wish they were downstairs!
The cutlass are cool ships; buut I can't get past how they are literally just a flying chicken carcass covered in tin foil. 🤣 (2 drumstick engines, 2 wings with the little claws on the end, and the little chicken 'tail' above the 'butthole'. The cockpit is even where the neck hole would be!)

@@Farrister I didn't mean it really. I used to run a player group over on Elite Dangerous but in SC I'm a lone player. But to be honest it's what I needed. When you run a player group you feel responsible for people's happiness in a way. But in SC I can just relax and dip in and out whenever I want.
Cutlass Steel is cheaper than Cutlass black in game and its the cheapest ship that allows 5 friends with each having something to do. In terms of dollar price, it's not great
@Farrister

I hadn't considered that but I suppose that's true!
The in game price is good for this ship. The real world cash cost is ridiculous. This is definitely an org ship. Solo players have 0 use for this type of ship in current game. That being said, this ship screams Drake. Slapped together for function. Safety and durability……meh.
@Farrister
Жыл бұрын
haha totally does scream Drake xD
Just another Disgusting cash grab move by CIG. This ship should have been a module version and not a stand alone one. Costing 130 bucks more. Since modularity isn't in the game yet, it should cost the same as the Black, since you give up all the cargo for a couple of turrets.
Having to review old ships because the games got no content. Must suck being a content creator ATM for this dumpster fire?

I try to get around as many ships as possible, but when you want to buy them in-game, and fly them for a couple of weeks before putting pen to paper, it takes a little time to get around to everything...
