    Tip 3 Maybe do that on brand new tanks that YOU know you’ve installed / the date at which you installed them. Don’t pop the T&P valve if it’s old like everyone is saying because old ones don’t seal. Open a faucet instead

    It took me exactly ONCE 45 yrs ago to learn that you NEVER USE YOUR PRV to break the vacuum, unless you were planning on replacing it anyway. Just open a faucet.. crack a union… loosen the CW flex fitting… ANYTHING BUT TOUCHING THE PRV. (Unless it was already dripping and needed replacing… then go for it )

    You can try to flush out sediments and sometimes they’re just plugged. We’ve had to open the valve at the bottom and use an air compressor and blow bursts up into it. It moves the calcium, then a few gallons come out, repeat.

    How do you drain the water heater when the drain valve doesn't work??

  • @flxmkr
    @flxmkr11 ай бұрын

    Our water heater burst, flooding all the insulation and making it heavy. It’s been sitting in our basement for 9 months, waiting for the water to evaporate, after we have already drained it. It’s too heavy to move up the steps. I suggested chucking it out the window, but husband says it’s too small. It’s still under warrantee, but I’m getting tired of heating up water in tea pots. Any suggestions? We’re in our 60s, so not as strong as we once were. Got it at Lowes, so they aren’t going to pick it up without a heavy fee.

    This is all well and good if you are replacing the water heater. If you are just doing a flush then you are a failure. I the heater has not been on a regular scheduled maintenance then you will need to pull the drain spigot and use a drill power agitator to break up all the sediment. Other wise you aren't touching the problem at all.

    One thing you can do is airlock the water heater, then unthread the drain down valve. Once it’s out, stick a 3/4 inch brass nipple with a ball valve in its place and thread it in really fast. Helps to have a vacuum there to catch any water that’ll come out when you pull out the drain valve You can also unthread the t&p, and then stick a piece of 1/2 pex attached to a vacuum down in the tank and suck it out

    You should never open the PRV. You are weakening the internal spring and setting the water heater up for malfunctions later on down the road.

    Every plumbing expert I’ve seen in these videos opens the value. I’ve also personally have had no issues doing that. Just have to do it carefully and since it’s only being done every one to two years, it should be fine throughout the lifetime of the tank.

    I'm pretty sure my manual actually tells me to check it annually by releasing it for a sec to make sure it still works and isn't blocked and the valve isn't corroded.

  • @juhDaddy09

    @juhDaddy09

    Жыл бұрын

    @Jake Rosendahl of course your manual tells you to do that. It guarantees that your PRV fails sooner than it should - and when that happens people tend to replace the whole water heater - instead of replacing the PRV.

  • @Jaker788

    @Jaker788

    Жыл бұрын

    @@juhDaddy09 Nope. I mean they tell you to periodically drain part of the tank to remove sediment, that prolongs life. Why not tell you there's no need to clean a tank or check the sacrificial anode so you can buy another sooner? I really don't think the PRV is gonna fail from opening 10-20 times in it's whole life, that's nothing for a spring. Springs go bad just sitting too, they go bad regardless of what you do. Testing the PRV is purely out of safety. Just like testing a fire alarm or an EStop. If for some reason the valve did get corroded and an overpressure event happened, you now have an exploded tank and flood, if it goes bad you find in the troubleshooting manual or Google or a plumber about replacement valves. People that replace water heaters tend to not be maintenance conscious people.

    I got it when I used to do water heaters in california, That drain valve will never work because of the settlement. We always create a vacuum, Pull the drain bulb out completely, Install a straight three quarter inch galvanized nipple. Now double up the washer and your garden hose and hope directly to the nipple and open the hotside on the bathtub upstairs or in the house and leave it open, You're gonna leave it open so you can bleed all the air out through there. As a bathtub has the largest port of any picture in the house. The straight three quarter inch nipple that you installed in the grain will drain that water heater in seven minutes. Total install shouldn't take more than one hour.

    I mean, if you're draining it already then why wouldn't you crack the anode rod and check it while it's draining? On top of that, once it drains a bit you should take that safety valve out and check it to be replaced. Two birds one stone.
