Question, do you know why the water turns green? I had been a plumber for 10 years, and did tankless cleaning all the time. Went to run a tankless service at one of my science teachers house. He is a brilliant guy very very smart. He asked me why did it turn green and I said I don’t know it always does. I thought nothing of it and left little bit later. He gives me a call. He said I’ve been doing some research and I did a couple test just to verify and the reason it turns green is because you’re starting to eat away the copper, the green tent is the solution slowly eating away at the copper so when you start to see a green hue you should probably stop. This guy is still teaching me things even well out of high school. What a great guy.

Very few people in my area want tankless. I have put in exactly one. In Feb of 2015. One of the thermo trips went bad about 2 weeks ago. With planned obsolescence, just shy of 8 years is not all that bad. Outlasted many other appliances in their house.

How many tankless owners actually do annual flushing? Most people don't want to pay for it, and don't know how to do it themselves. So, I just don't even recommend it. I also have seen a tankless installed without any service valves and it was installed by a professional plumber. LOL

I’d question why it’s even required…. Here in Australia these units are regularly installed with zero maintenance and last minimum 10 Years. I’ve replaced 20 year old units myself. Interestingly I downloaded the US manual for a Rinnai condensing tankless water heater and it mentions the descaling but this is completely missing from the Australian manual.

Super easy to do as long as you have the right parts and tools. Need a 5 gal bucket, some hoses and 3 gal of vinegar. You also need a small pump that has the right size fitting for that hose. I do this once a year and leave those hoses in that bucket and that stays together in the garage for next year

These comments about changing the piping... This is a video about cleaning the water heater. What is he supposed to say? "I'm sorry ma'am, I know you called me to clean the heater, but I can't help you until you re-pipe the whole house." That would bring out the "You're a crook" comments on the other side 😂

Those arnt to bad to clean out after you shut the lines and drain the unit for descaler there is a black threaded piece pointing down. Unthread that and rinse the screen. Then in the center of the unit there is a white "pipe" with a metal piece holding it in. Slide the metal piece toward you and slide the white cap down. This is the mud trap you will want to rinse out. Watch out for the black oring, it will get stuck inside the drain. Pull it out and put it back on the cap. Finally at the top left is a intake screen, use a Phillips head to remove, slide the handle to the left an 1/8th turn then slide out toward you. Reinstall it all and run the descale process.

Ok so 2 things. First off, galvanized piping voids the warranty of most tankless heaters. 2nd, you should leave the power and gas on but turn the temperature down to 100 degrees. This allows the solution to make its way through the heat exchanger. If you turn everything off it will just run through the service ports and not clean out the components of the heater that really need it.
