Drain a Dehumidifier With a Hose

Connect a hose to dehumidifier correctly to avoid leaks. A continuous gravity connection eliminates the need to empty a dehumidifier's bucket. The GE dehumidifier that I returned (humidistat was bad) was difficult to connect a hose to it without a leak. The connection was very hard to turn. I ended up putting some silicone grease on the threads. The Honeywell dehumidifier was much easier to connect.

I bought a dehumidifier a couple of years ago, and I am very happy I did. The air in my house feels so much drier, because even with a central h/a unit (I just bought and installed a brand new, entire unit), the inside humidity can climb to around 70%. When the dehumidifier is going constantly, it can drop down to around 45% - 60%, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it is. I have a big house, and it is down here a few feet from my table/computer in the living room. I spend almost all my time down here except when I am sleeping. I don't have a drain hose, and nowhere to drain it to anyway. So about three times a day it has to be emptied into the sink, or I take it outside to water the plants. A bit of a pain, but I need the exercise anyway. My power bill didn't seem to change, but it is hard to measure. If it did, it's not significant. I recommend everyone get one if they feel that they are still uncomfortable, and they can reduce the inside a/c temp by doing so, so save on some power bill that way, too.

0:50 Anytime plastic threads are part of your system, take care not to strip/cross thread. Plastic can damage other plastic too. For all threaded connections it is generally recommended to reverse thread until the female and male ends seat properly before tightening. As this is an atmospheric pressure system, thread sealants are usually not usually needed, but may help prevent corrosion.

It doesn't need to be connected to a hose. The hose saves the work of having to dump the water out of the reservoir.

It sounds like the hose connection is leaking. I bought a GE dehumidifier and the hose connection on it was really tricky to make the connection leak free. For several reasons, I quickly returned the GE humidifier to Home Depot and bought the Honeywell in this video. Hands down the Honeywell is better than the GE. I did make a demo/review of the GE when I bought it. Around the 3 minute mark I spend some time on getting a good seal on the hose connection: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rK2JkteRZcK7Z5M.htmlsi=cJo8F_YiM_q-R_ry

My basement is very damp during most of the warmer months. I really have considered running a dehumidifier down there. You you run you’re all year around? How much of a spike do you see in your electric bill? I’ve heard they’re basically like running an air conditioned all day long which just sounds like $$$$$$$$

I live in North East U.S. The Summer is when the dehumidifier is used heavily and not at all in the Winter. I just bought the Honeywell (returned a GE - quality was kind of crappy and the humidistat was faulty. The quality of the Honeywell is much better and it is much quieter) to replace a very old Wirlpool model. The Wirlpool was an energy hog. I don't know how this one will be. You could estimate the cost. The Honeywell's (30 pint) tag on the back says it uses 4.2 amps. 4.2 amps x 120 volts = 504 watts. My guess is that it runs about 75% of the time. I could look up my electricity rate and use this the formula from the link below to figure out what it might cost to run it. For sure, it is worth using a dehumidifier if you store valuable items in your basement or if someone in the household is allergic to mold. Here's the link: www.directenergy.com/learning-center/how-to-calculate-electric-bill

I just bought a Hisense dehumidifier this weekend. A friend got the drain hose it came with installed on it for me and we drilled a small hole in the plumbing downstairs and connect said hose to the existing plumbing. This dehumidifier has a built in pump to get the water up the drain hose it came with into my plumping. However, today, we checked it out in the basement and the empty bucket sign was on, the dehumidifier was off, and the humidity was back to 99%. What's up with it not sending the water up the drain hose and into the plumbing?

I am not familiar the that dehumidifier. If it has a pump that sends water uphill, it likely has a check valve. Maybe a bad check valve? Since you just bought it, you might try returning it and getting another one, maybe it is faulty?

So yeah, a dehumidifier pulls the excess moisture out of the air so your basement doesn’t get moldy, musty and with mildew. But you already knew that dehumidifiers don’t have a point! Make sure the hose isn't clogged. Also check to see if the dehumidifier's outlet to the hose isn't clogged either. I assume that you did not move the dehumidifier or the hose.
