So what is the reasoning for the bottomless pots? Is that so that you can easily distribute fertilizer in a guaranteed area where the plant will recieve it, and so the roots can spread and absorb additional moisture from the ground?

Yeah.. They are stubborn. I used some root hormone and water mix.. let the cutting sit in about 2 inches of the mix for about 3 weeks.. got some roots.

Depending on the ambient temperature, it could take 4 weeks or more to get a good set of roots. Best to not be too impatient.
