Dragnet 1951
Фильм және анимация
Taking the successful radio program to the new medium of television, Dragnet was famous for its use of actual Los Angeles Police Department case files. Jack Webb portrays Sgt. Joe Friday, who works the day shift with his partners on a variety of interesting cases. This program was reincarnated in 1967; eight years after its first television series had ended, with Jack Webb reprising his role of Sgt. Joe Friday.

Probably the most ominous theme of all TV shows ever. And easily one of the most recognizable. Often played for lulz in later TV shows such as Married With Children.
0:00 So THIS is where that music comes from!
Fun Fact! Following Webb's death on December 23, 1982, the L.A.P.D. honored him with a funeral normally reserved for officers who had died in the line of duty and permanently retired Joe Friday's badge number 714. Dragnet debuted over NBC-Radio in June 1949 and ran through February 1957. Webb also starred in two very successful television versions of the program- from 1952-59 and 1967-72. Webb first got the idea for Dragnet while working on the 1948 film He Walked by Night. Webb got to talking with one of the movie's technical advisors, officer Marty Wynn, who complained, "It rankles every damn cop in the country when they hear those far-fetched tales about crime. Why don't you do a real story about policemen?" Webb took his time in developing the series, plotting out every detail right down to the last sound effect. The L.A.P.D. approved the series, but had a few requirements: All dramatizations had to follow the facts of a real L.A.P.D. investigation; the show could never glorify or defame police officers; and it had to represent policemen as "real" human beings.

And, Jack Webb was working on a second television revival of Dragnet to premiere in 1983 and even had scripts written before his sudden death.
I just got a DVD of over 350 half hour radio episodes of Dragnet and I am in love with them. What an awesome time in radio.
Certainly takes me back to my childhood. Jack Webb moved as though he was in a body cast, he spoke in monotone. No inflection what so ever. But the best thing is the badge number. The seven fourteen, the same as the number on qualudes. I guess it's Zeitgeist.

@@marlanaferro1481 good point.
I stay up all night, I go to sleep watching Dragnet/ Never sleep alone because Jimmy is the magnet.
This was an excellent show.
You hear that song, you KNOW you're busted. XD
I wish I could get the very beginning notes as my ringtone.
Found a huge Dragnet poster at the local poster store, almost died of joy. Have it on my living room wall. Wish more people appreciated this show.
The series began on radio in June 1949, and lasted until February 1957 [the last two seasons in repeats, because Webb discontinued the radio edition in the summer of 1955]. The TV version began as a "preview" episode of "CHESTERFIELD SOUND-OFF TIME" in December 1951, with the series appearing three weeks later in January 1952 {most of the episodes were adapted from the original radio scripts}, continuing through the summer of 1959. New episodes were produced from January 1967 through April 1970.
I remember the remake of this with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks... hilarious.
I love this! I'm so happy it's posted. Thank you!
This was a great show Loved Jack Webb as Friday

Nick at Nite was great in the 90s
I recently started listening to a CD collection of "Dragnet" radio episodes and I can tell they had the same announcer on this version of the TV series.

epic intro.......love it!!!!!!
1951, my birth year.
I was a child when the TV show Dragnet aired. I think Dragnet is what inspired me to get my degree in Police Science and then become a police officer. If the story I read was correct, Webb was really a Reserve Sgt. with the LAPD and his Badge really was 714. When he died that Badge number was retired. He was also given a Police Officer's funeral. That is a great honor. He always came across as a God Fearing, 100% American and not afraid to say so. The world lost a good man the day he died.
When i was in grade school and the teacher or intercom said go to the office the kids in glass would use this them da da da

Thanks for the comment, I graduated HS in the early 2ks but I remember elementary and middle this being a thing. Crazy.
0:00-0:05 is the theme my dad would always hum when my mom showed up to mess with her sometimes. Lol I always wondered if he made that up or it came from something, now I found it. Lol 😂
fast relief for heartburn nothing does it better than Tums
I love this show
Dragnet lasted over 25 years and it was based on true stories from the L.A.P.D. case files. It was far better than all the other cop shows.
THANKS. GREAT!!!
I was born in 1951 !
This is a really fine piece of music (in my ever-so-humble opinion). It sets up the mood of suspense, danger, and sadness very successfully for me. This was a very good program. I saw it as a child and again as an old geezer on Netflix. The "cool" restatement of this theme in the 67-70 series was not so "hot."
It's a pity that this earlier version is so rarely seen. As much as I liked Harry Morgan, I'd love to see Friday's first partner.
Ladies and gentlemen of Los Angeles, the story you may or may not have seen was true. The names were changed to protect the innocent. But boy when you hear this song, look out for cops and badges. They carry them.
Keke NEW ORLEANS BOUNCE BROUGHT ME HERE.
"My name is Friday. I'm a cop."
We play the theme song in Marching Band this year ^_^ The show is called The Heist
this theme song scared me when i was a child
Please start captioning these, You Tube. Not all of us can hear.
Webb tried to bring Ben Alexander back as "Frank Smith" for the 1966 "pilot" movie {that wasn't seen until January 1969}, but he was already committed to co-starring with Howard Duff on ABC's "FELONY SQUAD" that fall. Webb then asked Harry Morgan to become his "new" partner, "Officer Bill Gannon", for the movie and the TV series.
Gracias duro de domar!
Always preferred Ben Alexander as Joe's partner. I recall the episodes where "Frank" was studying so hard for the Sergeant's exam.
Antenna is in a dispute with cable vision, here in NYC, so we have not seen Dragnet, or Adam-12 in three months. thank you, whoever is in charge all for a couple of cents. BIG ED
@GENSIPE taking from what episode?
Holy Cr@p this goes back to 1951?
Indeed an iconic theme to a great show. However, in some channels like FOLK TV and Justice Network, they don't play that theme. They replaced it with some unmemorable music that we don't recognize. They did with other shows like Bonanza and Mister Ed. Something about copyrights. Can you help explain why in some channels they don't play our shows in the original format and play boring generic music that overlaps the otherwise memorable music from shows like Dragnet, especially its theme, Danger Ahead? Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum...Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum, DUM!
just the facts.
This intro theme song has been remixed at least 10 times
"Sgt. Friday" had three partners in the original series: "Sgt. Ben Romero" [Barton Yarborough], the one originally heard on radio through December 1951, when he (and sadly, Yarborough) suddenly died of a heart attack; "Sgt. Ed Jacobs" [Barney Phillips], who disappeared after a few months because Phillips sounded too similar to Jack Webb; and "Officer Frank Smith" [Herb Ellis, then Ben Alexander in the fall of '52].
The Copyright reads as 1955 not 1951 though the original run was 1951-159 until they brought it back out later (1967-1970).
so this is the theatre of life song
has anybody else learned to play a similar sounding song on piano called the curious cat? it was an elementary compostion i learned from a book at piano lessons as a child.. dying to find it ..

I liked the original episodes with "Frank Smith". I'd heard on some talkshow around that time that Jack Webb actually received a fan letter where the ONLY "address" was: "Dum-de-dum-dum"! That was LONG before ZIP Codes!
LA sure looked different back then.
@buzzkillmetalmusic Amon Amarth just played in my city last Tuesday, they closed with "In Pursuit of Vikings"...I'd obviously heard the song before but it was only then when I realized the similarity to Dragnet's theme. What the heck, eh?
I used this vid for school
Cold in LOS ANGELES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember the show well...oh by the way the caption should read 1954 not 51.
Por qué?
I wonder if Joe Friday ever met Kate Monday, Pat Tuesday, or George Frankly.
Identical to the radio opening.
-No sign of the cat? -Why? -Not resistant -Why? -He is a thief tann tann tann tannn, tann tann tann tannn tannnnn ....
¿Por qué?
You mean, "The Simpsons is like this," to say that it is like The Simpsons implies that it came first.
RIP Harry Morgan
No cop shows like this anymore
wow
TAAAAAAN TAN TAN TAN TAAAN TAN TAN TAN TAAAAAAN xDD
Before Horatio Caine...there was Joe Friday
TUMS and "Donkey Kong carrying Pauline up the first stage of Donkey Kong arcade".
bum bum bum bum, bumbumbumbumBUM!!!
@emsman100 Harry entered the show in 1967.
I always thought this song belonged to a Sherlock Holmes movie/show.
My god the amount of time on that doorknob was an eternity. But still cool.
Badge of Honor?Anyone?

Jack Webb in great bio (All About Jeffrey Hunter) at amazon!
@vatltatl hhahahaha i thought i was the only one :'D
Used to be a lot of police work was about payoffs from panel house bordellos, poker games, and gay bars which allowed mixed race straight couples.
I love this show... but I love adam-12 i think more! :)

By the Roman numerals, it's 1855.

The date in Roman Numerals is MCMLIV= 1954. Since the last two characters are hard to read it may be 1955, MCMLV. Can't quite tell. The year 1855 would be MDCCCLV. (1000+500+300+50+5).
@buzzkillmetalmusic - I also had the same idea! its similar
my name is Monday...

@champsterick You are right, but is there something wrong with education? For instance, you use the word COP, but can you tell me where it comes from and what it means? Do you have any idea what the Coefficent of friction is and how it is used to help at an accident scene? Where did the American word Sheriff come from? What is the proper way to hold a donut to keep the powdered sugar from dropping on your uniform? I'm sorry, I believe in education.

@MyVette85 Exactly! At the time of the World War II countries and people all over the world had to ally and crush the 3 major tyrants of the world! Even though one of the men who won was the worst one! Now people can use briefcase atom-bombs and laser rays to win wars! (Alright maybe not BRIEFCASE atom bombs and laser rays but I hope you get my point.)
It's not a remake then. It's a parody.

They stopped Jack Webb from saying "I'm a cop." Instead he had yo say, "I carry a badge" as "Cop" was disrespectful to Police Officers. The newscasters now call them Cops. Is it ok now?
