The biggest difference is the tires and possibly driver, at the end you see that the GT catches up to the mazda when grip is not an issue. Takes less distance to reach 140 km/h

Realistically, whoever is interested in these cars will mostly decide base on what kind of driving experience they want out of it. As you can see, the 2 cars are practically the same. Yes, the MX5 is a bit faster, but realistically, that's not a big deal unless you're racing cars around this power left and right all the time. Whatever out there that beats an 86 is going to beat an MX5 as well and whatever is going to lose to an MX5 is also going to lose to the 86 as well. It comes down to whether or not you want a convertible. That's the difference here. Being able to experience the rush of an open top at this price point is incredible.

the driving experience is a lot different. The BRZ is more of a pure sports car feel. It is more planted and you feel every undulation in the road more. In the Miata, there is body roll, but it is incredibly controlled and feels more "fun" than the BRZ. The Miata also has a really nice interior (granted, the one I drove was an ND2 GT model). The steering wheel feels straight out of an Audi and it has shockingly little road noise for a soft top roadster. Comparatively, the BRZs that I have been in (granted, none since the 2017 refresh) feel cheap on the inside and have a lot of cabin noise. If not for how small the Miata trunk is, I would buy one today. As it stands, I'm planning on waiting for the 2022 BRZ and then making a decision.

What holds back the GT86/BRZ is the way it puts the power down the Subaru engineers did an really bad job by making the car's power dip where it needs it most in the mid to high rpm range judging from the dyno sheets.

In drag? Nothing. Neither of these cars are supposed to be fast. They're supposed to be affordable & fun to take to a track or hit curvy backroads with, and they both do it well. No shit they're slow, everyone knows. That isn't the point of these cars. That's like making fun of a fork because you can't eat soup with it.

A little short on specs, but assuming this is the ND1 Miata with the 2.0 liter (155 hp) and not the 1.5 liter (129 hp) since you mentioned a 30 kw (~40 hp) difference. ND2 Miatas (2019+ 181 hp) should be even faster.

The 86 launch was inhibited by traction control you can see a good 0.5 second lag in the 1st gear acceleration. This isn't a torque or power to weight issue. Earlier torque does next to nothing in a 1/4 mile when comparing two short gear manual cars because both cars are into second gear at above 4k rpm after a few seconds and both will stay in the upper rpms until the test is finished. Early torque is great in the day to day driving, and in fairness it was a factory tuning choice on the boxer that can be fixed in 5 minutes with an open flash tablet if that's important to the owner. Miata owners are mislead by these tests as they are always performed on stock tires, when in practice the stock rims get used for snow tires and almost all these cars will come used with wider summer rubber. Mine has 255/40/r17 and rubs slightly on full lock with lowering springs but does not rub with the stock rims nd snow tires. The wider rim/tires came free with the car otherwise I would have chosen 250/40/r17 personally. Anyways, the biggest differences are going to be tires, traction control envelopes, and track length. Even the new 2022 GR86 has 215 tires, though I believe they are Pilot Super Sport now. Factory lowering springs and Brembos are available for all 86s for those seeking more control. This doesn’t surprise me at all… My 2015 Toyota Corolla sport was faster than the 86 in a straight line. The 86 was built to go sideways more so than it was built to go forward it’s a lot of fun around corners but in a straight line you’ll fall asleep behind the wheel before you find any real joy within it.

Not sure about that, mx5 has a way better power to weight ratio in 2019 model. They both have similar amount of torque, however in the mx5 you get peak torque at 4000rpm vs 6500rpm in the 86. If you look at 0-60 figures in both the mx5 and 86, the mx5 is quicker. Watch other track reviews and its even quicker on track as well.
