    i think this is a very interessting way of bring out slurry, i dont really know why that isn´t common in germany... we have all those gigantic tanks and trucks and they all keep talking about ground pressure and stuff, even with big moveable tanks at the corner of a fiel where the slurry gets dumped in by trucks because they can move faster ... i mean oll that is pretty expensive so why dont buy a pump and put it next to like 2 compined slurry container at the edge of a field ...

    Any ideas on how to trap it? So it can be used for other applications?

  • @nigelft

    @nigelft

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@1977crabb Actually, relatively simple, based off of an experiment (abet using oxygen generation from algae ...) I learnt in High School, c. 1986-7 ... Build alongside the collection pond, suitable size tank(s). The natural outline of mixing tanks, means the top is a inverted funnel. In my idea, near the center of the top of the tank, is fitted wih a 18" bore, ØID, pipe, with a crown valve, feeding off of it, and down into large, repurposed, propane tanks, set up in serial, so as one fills up, it overflows into another; once all tanks, especially if more than two, that are set up, are full, then tankers can come along, and collect it ... That makes me think if there is a way to cool it down to lower than its boiling point, so it is collected as liquid methane ... The only thing is, the manure 'silo' (actually, a tank) will have to be built to stricter standards, and will have to built completely out of metal, presumably an alloy of stainless steel to contain the pressure, especially if, beyond a certain concentration of methane, that gas has an effect on anything plastic. Equally, that tank has to be of a metal that won't cause the methane to spontaneously ignite. Similar to the entire structure of the pond, the tank will have pipes underneath the 'silo', in order to detect methane leakage, along with any other kind, beneath that, as well ... If human entry to the silo is required, an airlock would be built, to one side, to allow entry, whilst only allowing a minimum amount of methane to escape, although really, access should only be allowed when the silo is practically empty; for safety sake, especially if the level of O2 is reduced way below a certain point, wearing the appropriate respiratory PPE, plus a gas detector, must be worn, and used. During the construction of, what essential is, the manure tank, included ought to be spark-proof immersion stirrers/mixers, around the circumference, with the blades at appropriate point(s), around the circumference, and height(s), surrounded by protective cages, which are there especially to keep the manure/slurry fully agitated, stopping it from forming a crust (since it's not needed for odour control), and prevent any particulate, such as sand, from settling out. From the center point at the top, I forsee a electric motor, attached to a rigid pipe, possibly hollow, and attached together by flanges --- or equally, from the bottom ---- that, at the bottom of the tank, is attached to 'wiper' blade(s) to sweep around the bottom of the tank, to push the contents out. Like all other industrial tanks, the 'floor' would be a much more shallower 'funnel', but a steep enough angle, so that the 'liquids' and 'solids' will slip towards the center, with those wiper blades assisting. After the manure/slurry is fed through a grate, an 18" ØID pipe, directly as near to the center as possible, will feed that mixture into a two-stage macerator, to reduce all the 'solids', including suspended clumps of sand, into a fine particulate form, that can be pumped, along with the 'liquid' (especially if a measured volume of water is added on top of the 'crust' ...), then through a pump, at, or slightly above, ground level, to enable the manure slurry to be pumped away for disposal/dispersal. Another idea would be that, as bactera get to work, that generates a lot of heat. A counter flow of water, through pipework on the sides, inside, could generate enough hot water for the farmstead, with a portion sprayed back into the tank itself, to help keep the manure from entirely solidifying. Yes, it will mean a manure tank will have to be built, quite literally from the ground, upwards, a not insignificant issue, not least what to do with the current manure/slurry ponds. One solution would be is that, given that on most farms, the infrastructure is in place, the manure/slurry catchment pond would be a intermediate collection area, prior to that contents being pumped into the tank. An idea that, once the system gets going, a portion of the methane can be used to fuel the generator needed to pump the manure/slurry, from the pond to the top of the tank, and any other pumps, and electronic & electrical equipment ... Indeed, if a considerable amount of methane is generated from all the manure/slurry tanks, across the Gain Belt, built in an identical manner, can be mixed in with, say, LNG, for gas fired power stations, hopefully far-sighted people at the US State Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency, can see the advantages of using Liquid Methane as a energy source, and out of their combined budgets, subsidise the construction of manure/slurry tanks, next as at all possible, to open-air, slurry pits, and equally pay the farmer for the methane generated, as a supplemental income. If a large amount of hot water is created, especially to temperature either hot enough to be used as hot water, or, at higher temperatures, and/or hot enough to turn to steam, that can turn generator fans, then there is a possibility of having a not insignificant number of CHP stations, feeding into the grid ... The initial capital expenditure will be huge, but capturing the controllable methane emissions, which is able to be sold off as fuel, as well as each, large-enough farm, having a small scale CHP station, that may produce a not insignificant amount of both heat and hot water, may be sufficient incentive ...

    @@melvinpeachey6963 I wouldn't be so harsh ... ... but her not having a comprehensive science education, means much of her well meaning intentions is only going to create the proverbial road ... Yes, a change to renewable energy will only help, very short term. But, long term, given the population of America is only going to continue to grow, especally as energy demands grow, nuclear fission, then, eventually, fusion, is the only way forward. Hopefully, on a secon track, would be reactors that can 'burn' high- and- medium- level nuclear waste, with only low-level a by-product, which ... well, I have an idea about that ... I have yet to read her 'Green New Deal', but if it suggests that Americans reduced meat consumption ... well good luck with that one. Granted, reducing red meat consumption to one meal/per week will reduce heart disease, long-term, as well as other diseases, especially brought about by obesity. But, if the American population continues to grow at current rates, even persuading them to a more vegetable based diet, especially a vegan one, means a huge increase in land required for arable farming. And if she suggests that only natural compost be used, instead of current chemical fertiliser, and other agrochemicals, again, good luck with that one, as large amount of natural fertiliser comes from, yes, you guessed it ... animal manure. And the reason why organic produce is so expensive, is the lower yield, as the direct result of pest, fungi, and other issues, which modern agrochemicals addresses. Even extensive weed infiltration of a, say, wheat crop, causes serious issues. Whether or not current Global Warming is significantly caused by human activity is something that's likely, but highly complex to parse out from the past paleometeorological record of the Earth's geological past, and especially when you add in the variations of solar output of our sun, over millenia, shown by deep level ice cores ... That saying, given how quickly humans have taken over this planet, we've no-doubt have had, and continue to have, a very much significant impact, on this planet. How big that impact is, is strongly dependent on, and can only be determined by, increasingly accurate modelling, which, ironically, requires increasingly powerful computation, given the complex mathematics of not just known variables, but variable variables. But, dig really and truly deep enough behind every single peice of environmental rhetoric (a decent metaphor is to dig the equivalent of past the Earth's Crust, and into the Upper Mantlel), and there lies something almost every group, and organisation (like Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, et al), and many more dare not say ... To truly save this planet, if indeed humans play a large causal factor in the environment effects seen, especially in the extinction of other species, usually due, directly, to habitat destruction brought about by us humans, then, really there is only one thing that can stop humanities demand on the Earth: reduce human population, by, much like China's 'One Child Policy', quietly encourage reduction in human reproduction. I'm certainly not a conspiracy theorist that believes in 'Plandemics'; after all, if that were the case, how come the Influenza Pandemic killed vastly more numbers than WWI, when microbiology was very much in its infancy, and no-one knew what DNA, let alone RNA, was. And don't forget, the massive famines created by both Stalin, and Mao, with perhaps Lenin to a lesser extent, led to the deaths of ~100 million, as a conservative estimate. To this day, no-one truly knows how many died during Mao's 'Great Leap Foward', but the eniment author on Mao, Frank Dikötter places the death toll, between 1958 - 1962, as 45 million. To paraphrase Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, once you've gone past 10 million dead, you've kinda made your point, already, eh ... But I've digressed, greatly ... Point is, to truly curb humanity's impact on the only planet with know life on it, then the conclusion is simply: we can recycle as much as we want; reduce CO2 emissions; reduce methane by eliminating the number of farm animals needed; reduce energy consumption, especially the use petrochemicals; try and switch as many onto an organic, vegan, diet (which still doesn't solve the issue of the massive increase in demand for not just arable farming, but output ...); reduce our dependency on Earth minerals (Iron and Aluminium ore extraction, to name two; and equally rare earth metals. As the latter is present in almost all electronics, the two combined means reducing the turnover in electrical and electronic appliances/devices (good luck with that one ...)), and much else besides, which I doubt, very much, AOC had considered, especially in any great depth, and scope, as that may not be her expertise ... Call me an old cynic, who lived through the very worst years of the Cold War, from the 70's to the early 1990's, when the Berlin Wall fell, and the Soviet Union imploded ... But, from my reading into things, if humanity is, indeed, the cause of all the Earth's woes, then what is need is something truly cataclysmic: nothing nuclear, or radiological, given the effect of beta, gamma, and other, high-energy radiation does, and the calculated environmental effects of a total, global, nuclear, exchange, using all of the Earth's nuclear warheads; and nothing chemical too, given the equally catastrophic effect of truly toxic chemicals, especially in the form of chemical warfare agents (the effects of the use of 'Agent Orange' used in the Vietnam War still lingers on, in lasting birth defects, and worse ...) ... Instead, biological, abet specifically targeted towards humans solely. It can't be a variation of any known zoonotic viruses, due to the environment impact of them, and neither can it be a bacteria, fungi, nor parasite, for the same exact reasons. Instead, a completely de-novo virus, using a artificially created DNA sequence. Along with that, it has to be air-borne; able to replicate, and mutate, at a very fast rate, abwt with a long incubation/asymptomatic phase, that means it lives long enough in the host, for it to passed on, without killing the host, at not too fast a rate. Finally, it can only affect humans, in other words, it can't jump the species gap from humans, to animals, or, if it does, at only a small fraction of the rate of human-human transmission, and with a much reduced lethality (in terms of LD50). And lastly, very few hunans will be spared, not unless they have access to hermetically sealed bunkers, built very deep underground, meaning those that were built in the advent of an all out thermonuclear war, but only those that both haven't been mothballed, and have more than sufficient enough supplies to last an entire calendar year. It would be the kind of plague that, like the Black Death, Smallpox, Malaria, and Influenza, has the potential to utterly devastate the human population, from c. 7 Billion, down to c. 1 Billion, or even half that. Worse, in those that were exposed, but somehow survived the initial symptoms, a major lasting effect would be that they be rendered sterile. Live birth rates will continue to drop off a cliff, given that this virus is incredibly self-sustaining, and has a high longevity, due to having a near-indestructible protein structure ... It need not even be as complex as a virus. The prion protein, as seen in BSE, CJD, etc, has proven to be not only incredibly dangerous, in terms of how contagious, and infectious it can be, but given its almost immune to nearly all sterilisation technologies, save that of incineration, much has had to be changed in terms of, for a given example, neurosurgery is conducted ... Instead, it would make most, if not all, of the ridiculous conspiracies, especially the current one regarding SARS-CoV-2/SARS-nCoV-2, practically bush-league in comparison ... A truly, and utterly, terrifying conspiracy would be the creation of the aforementioned virus/protein, that will kill every single human being, in time, on this planet, even remote tribes, leaving the entirity of wild life behind ... ... and no, that virus/protein doesn't/won't create zombies ... that would be too easy on humanity, in giving a hope of survival ... And yes, I have though this through, as a novel I would like to write, even if, if I can't buy a decent PC, to do it the old fashioned way, on a typewriter ... I have the beginnings, and the end .. it's just the middle which is the headache ... One of the many problems I have, which is currently creating my 'writer's block' , is imagining what will happen to the huge infrastructure us humans have built for ourselves, if we humans are no longer around to maintain it, and keep it running ...
