My neighbor is a retired jeans designer from Wrangler. His 3D designs are fantastic. They look like computer perfection. When I saw this I thought of him. I have watched all 9 vids and want more. When you retire, go on tour! I would pay to see you. Your instruction is cool and simple. The best.

I read and watched several tutorials for this and had a go at drafting yesterday. I want to make a very narrow collar and lapel, and couldn't figure out how to adjust the 'standard' measurements the tutorials would suddenly rely on. I thought "I wish Christopher Sartorial had a video for this, he would explain properly". And lo and behold this came up in my KZread recommendations this morning! Very happy. I won't be sewing a test from my draft yesterday, I'll be starting from scratch with this method instead ;-)

The necklines you mention are really just a matter of design. Draw the neckline you want and make a facing to finish it off. My only advice is: If you create a deep V neck in the front, keep it shallow in the back, otherwise the garment will fall off the shoulders.

Thank you for posting this. One question - why are we marking in 3/8 inch from the neckline when starting the collar draft? Would this amount vary for any reason (fabric thickness, muscular neck, etc.)? A tailoring book that I have has us mark in 1/4 in at the notch, but not at the neck edge. Does this serve the same purpose?

Chris, do you have a tutorial on the assembly of a jacket? Thank you

Jacket patterns are rather advanced stuff, so I may not get around do showing one for a while. I'm also not a sewing instructor. There are many videos out there teaching jacket construction and tailoring.

Your method is almost correct , however what makes the collar roll and hide the neckline is not collar width , but outside collar length. So there is no need to add an additional 1/4 ' to the collar width 2.5 inches is plenty. I know you later said about spreading the collar so you understand the concept. I hope you realize that by pivoting the collar and additional 1/4 beyond the brake line, you have added almost a total of 5/8 of spring in the collar. 3/8 like you added in the beginning is sufficient for most suit jkts I ever made. I always add a true collar stand to the collar, not just a cut and sewn extraction to achieve a better collar. But not bad , your video is by far one of the better ones.

You're right John. If you are going to add a separate collar stand, then the amount of collar spread may be excessive, but for a single piece collar this draft method works well. Of course I always test and adjust the collar before finalizing the pattern.

Yes, you can position the break point (top button) higher or lower. The draft method is the same.

Another awesome tutorial! Is there no need for a dart under the lapels? Most of my jackets have this dart.

  • @christophersartorial7671

The darts under a lapel are typically there to help fit the chest. They are not needed for the collar/lapel, but you'll often find them when a jacket does not have a bust dart or princess seam.

Hi Chris greetings to you sir I've just recently come across your video and I must say that I am really impressed. I will certainly be making full use of them. However I would like to know where I can get the paper you are using to draft on becuz I can't seem to get it where I'm living sincere thanks to you in advance

The paper is a marking paper made for the apparel industry. Perhaps butcher paper would work.

For drafting a jacket, I would double the amount of ease for a start. That would be about 5 inches for the bust/chest.

Hi Christopher, I want to draft a shawl collar ,do I draft the fold line in the same way as the notched collar? do I go out 1 inch at the high shoulder point and down to the break point on the extenton? looking forward to more videos

  • @christophersartorial7671

The draft for a shawl collar is similar. Extend a seam in the under collar/lapel either to the breakpoint, or out to the collar edge where the notch would be. Perhaps I'll get around to demonstrating this.
