DRAFT HORSES: Mowing Clover Hay
I'm out mowing a field of clover with the Belgian horses. Every thing went well until the very end.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Imagine in the future, when we are out of fuels, these guys will still go on and on and make the world go round as long as there are new grass to feed them, and these simple but effective tools will work just fine because of people like Jim that takes good care of his equipment and animals :) Thanks for showing us!
Thanks for including the broken bolt portion, this is the reality and though disruptive to progress, happens,, otherwise, we think its easier than it is.. You even checked b4 starting. Sometimes if I am in a hurry and don't care to be so machine perfect, I will bite the bottom of the bolt with a vice grips a little bit, to create some interference on the threads so the nut would back off if I have room or a nyloc nut but a good lock washer will usually do it, but differant world on wood dirt and farm equipment, lots of vibration. .. Thanks Jim, that clover looks nice and your nice and sharp.. As the wheels wear the cogs down the diameter should have gotten slightly smaller which may make the cutter faster or just the opposite, but yeah, I can tell your maxed out, nice and sharp! , good job on those corners. Love it, let's make wind rows, I see those rain clouds, hopefully they blow over so you can bale, rake and bale. I like the pace.. They used to say, "when you getting a corn picker?" my Dad says ,"what do you mean, I have 6" referring to his 6 boys, I am the youngest, and 4 Sisters. We picked corn by hand. Used an old honey wagon.. Thanks, again.

It's great the way you cut the hay it's nostalgic, clean no pollution and your not breathing in fumes ,it's truly beautiful the way you farm.These horses are the most beautiful animals.

BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MY CHILD HOOD THANKS I LOVED WORKING WITH THE HORSES
I had the bolt come out on the manure spreader driving a pair of 3 year old colts. They had only been hitched a few times. Fortunately they were pretty well tempted and I was quick on my feet. Dad got a big chuckle.

Beautifully trained and well behaved horses. They are a Credit to you
Watching you & the horses cutting hay was so relaxing, that I drifted back into the twentieth century. Into a time when the family ate, worked, played together & listened to radio shows like The Shadow, Gene Autry, The Red Rider, & Roy Rogers! 🙂
That was bueatful . Love to see them draft horses work together. Thanks for sharing.
That was quite mesmerising watching the cutter bar.
Great explanation on mower operation, beautiful cattle feed and honesty in showing problems.
It's just amazing how well you and your team work together. Keep up the good work.
Great video, thanks! I was enthralled by you and your team of horses and could actually smell the clover.

I like to watch all your vidéos! So peaceful to see you working with your beautiful horses!
Love seeing Lady and Bill ❤
To me the sound of the horses and cutter cannot beat a motorized machine.As a 5 year old c. 1948 I used to go with my Aunty Very up Gillamoor Lane where the thresher and hay rick awaited. I usually was handed a club of sorts which I used to clobber the rats. Best part was when my Aunt returned with baskets of sandwhiches, pork pies, cake and hot tea.The thresher was a noisy. dusty old thing so it was into the bathtub berore dinner.

Something soothing about watching this! Super cool. Horses well trained. Enjoyed watching!
Beautiful stand of hay and a great broke team. A pleasure to watch.
Well trained and well mannered team. Great video learning a lot.
Wow, the way my grandpa use to cut hay long ago. Thanks 🙏👍👍
👍👌🇨🇦❤, I smell that fresh cut hay from here, I question my own sanity several times a day, 🤔😉🤣
Awesome video, very relaxing to hear the mower. Keep up the good work.
Forgot to mention. If you start having a traction problem and you have an arc welder, you can build up the lugs with weld. A good wintertime job. Also, great camera work by your camera person. Some fast walking and a steady hand made for a great video. A Tedder would be nice in a couple days to help with drying. I’ve got an old horse drawn Tedder and it worked good to promote drying. Lots of newer models out there nowadays, like the one the Amish build in Pennsylvania.

Yes, we use tedders a lot here, as you may see in the near future. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Thanks for sharing Jim!
Very nice job. Back in the day my Grandfather modified his mower to go behind his Ford 8N. That left me on that metal seat and using both feet to get the bar up. Good memories. Take care and stay safe, Al

Your horses are so smart and you treat them with great respect.. One time would be nice for you if you haven't already done this is to show us how smart your horses are. I know from watching wow!!!
Pretty dang slick .sharp knives and a good swath board
My father Charles used a team of horses back in the 30's & 40's to farm in Pueblo Colorado , they had about 21 acres , I was born in 1946 , very few pictures ! Bob
Great skill lovely to see!👍
You’ve got that mower working like a well tuned Swiss watch, even in that very green beautiful clover. I sure hope you can get it dry and baled up. As far as your problem with the nut coming off, cutting loose your doubletree, been there done that, but only once, not necessarily on a mowing machine. But on equipment where the doubletree is under the tongue. As soon as I could I solved the problem by drilling a hole in the bolt and putting a cotter pin behind the nut, problem solved. Good luck with the hay.

Dick49311 We did get it dried and baled , nice hay. That’s a good idea with a hole in the bolt and a cotter pin. I thought a lock nut would hold it, But it did not.
Good mower, good mowing!
Jim if you will put what they call a non clogging section in on the first three, you will cut right through that stuff that's laying down right on the inside. Most Amish shops will have those. We cut straight alfalfa here in the west, and I was amazed on how good that cut through the alfalfa
My grandfather had an Albion,land driven mower. Originally towed by horses,then towed by a grey fergie in the 1960's. That was in Wales. United Kingdom.
Excellent! This is the best job in the world! ))
Great video!
Enjoyed it , thanks
Great video. Thanks
love the sound of the mower. A second nut "jammed" against the first one should help keep things together.

2-8-2021 Beautiful stand of clover. You said for the cows. Can the clover bales be feed to the horses? Or is it a bit to rich ? One farm I worked they mixed , clover, Timothy & another type in the seeder when sowing oats. Was for milk cows, even with a crimper style mower was hard to get dry .
@WorkingHorsesWithJim

It is a bit too rich for the horses, but makes good feed for the cows.
What year is your sickle bar?
Pepere had a McCormick Deering horse drawn mowing machine. He used it with Pat and Mike, two female draft horses. When I was 7 he bought an F 12 Farmal tractor and retired the horses. Very sad. :-(

Nice stand, nice mowing except , of course, for the little mishap. I have a dolly wheel on my mower. How long will it take for the clover to cure under your weather conditions?
@WorkingHorsesWithJim
4 жыл бұрын
Klaus Karbaumer I’ve never used a dolly wheel. I cut that clover on Saturday afternoon and bailed on Thursday. No rain, probably could have pushed it and done it sooner but we were swamped with work.
wow,,, how many acres you all have ?
To bad you had a mishap today. The horse seem so nimble even though they are so big. I love watching you move them sideways as you turn around. Did you do all that training yourself?
@WorkingHorsesWithJim

Hi Jim, how many times would you need to sharpen the knife when cutting the clover?

Nick & Barbara Michell I use serrated Knives, so they don’t have to be sharpened too much.
Jim do you keep a couple of mowers around for parts???

Jay L I’ve never spent a whole day cutting hay so I guess I don’t know, But before I’m done first cutting, I’ll have cut about 80 acres
Have you ever been out mowing and a small animal such as a rabbit or woodchuck jump out and spook the horses or do they remain calm if something like that happens
@WorkingHorsesWithJim

On this type of set up if you had a front wheel to hold the weight of the thing. Could a few people do this like you know with out the horse. Just wondering how much power is required.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim the reason why I asked is that one time I was at a place watching a horse operate a sugar cane press. Well... the pole that was used to attach the horse to it broke at the end where he attached the horse. Well my mom and dad said hey it’s your turn. Well, I tried it out and it was not that hard until they put about 3-4 stalks of the sugar cane in it then it was tough. 2 at a time was enough. That was my main reason for asking.
