Drachenburg -The Past of a German Fairy-tale Castle

Drachenburg Castle in Königswinter, near the German city of Bonn, is a real tourist magnet and Instagram hotspot. It may look like a medieval fairytale castle, but it wasn’t built until the late 19th century. And its history is a mix of colorful, dark and bizarre - involving an eccentric bon vivant, Nazis and, of course, a dragon. DW reporter Diana Piñeros went to take a look at the castle for you.

Thank you very much! I used to live as a child in Bonn for several years many decades ago. I'm always embarrassed how little I know about the places I live in - as long as I live there. As a tourist I make much more of an effort to learn about places.

It's a very nice and interesting place. Unfortunately, it was closed for a long time due to the Covid pandemic. Next time I visit my friend living close, I'll go there again. Whenever you are there, you should continue uphill to the Drachenfels, the dragon rock with the ruin on top. The view from there is even more spectacular than from Drachenburg, which is only half way up the Drachenfels.

Blown away. The man who built the castle, got money from investing in the Panama Canal! Mind blowing.
