Dr Tristram Horton: An open secret | Carte Blanche | M-Net

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟵 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.
Neurosurgery is a highly specialised medical discipline and with just a handful of neurosurgeons in South Africa, these doctors are part of an elite inner circle. So, when a high-powered international surgeon from the United States arrived in South Africa, many of his colleagues welcomed him into the fold. But not long after he started practising, alarm bells were raised about his work. In November last year, a 19-year-old underwent an operation to clip a blood clot in his brain. For an experienced neurosurgeon, this was a routine procedure. But for reasons that remain unclear, this surgeon allegedly clipped the main blood supply to the young patient’s brain. In an investigation spanning two continents, Carte Blanche investigates how a disgraced doctor from the US was permitted to yield a scalpel in operating theatres in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, endangering the lives of his patients.

I just googled the guy and there's an order granted by the Arizona Medical Board dated 3rd March 2017 where he surrendered his license to practice allopathic medicine. So if it took me all of 1 minute to Google that and read it, so what is the HPCSA doing? Surely they should have checked that he was sued for malpractice and settled the matter but his conduct was unprofessional and had his license revoked. It's not just him that needs to be held accountable. It's the hospital who hired him, the HPCSA... Maybe even the Minister of Health.

This happens to alot of ppl where they are left hungry for days or even a week waiting for a operation. When ppl get bumped down the theater list because of emergencies this is what happens. That is why nurses are supposed to be advocates for their patient & remind the doctor that they are making the patient suffer needlessly. Drs being overburdened also lead to these problems.

Dear Carte Blanche. I urgently need assistance with an unresolved case with the HPCSA involving a specialist physician also a foreign Dr licensed to practice here in South Africa. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. A rare genetic disorder. This Specialist physician practices at Sandton Mediclinic. I feel exactly the same as these patients. Dr's bury their mistakes. There was a hearing with the HPCSA via teams. How this Dr says that he is not obligated to fill out any forms for anybody. Yet he treated my daughter for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome at Sandton Mediclinic. I am a civil servant , govt school teacher who is trying to retire medically on the grounds of ill health. If forms are not completed and sick notes not supplied by the physician my pension will be severely impacted. Blessings and thanks Miss S Williams

Unfortunately many specialists do not want to fill in forms mostly cause they do not have time. All you have to do is go to your GP & let him request all his notes, tests etc than you GP can do it & refer to the specialists notes. You GP can also help you to call the specialist & ask him to give you a appointment to fill in the forms. You will need to pay for a consultation. If the department or insurance wants a specialist to complete the forms you can find another specialist ( even if it's not one familiar with your disorder) to do it after you have all your file notes. If this is not viable you need to go make a affidavit with a Commissioner of oats stating that you tried getting the specialist to fill out the forms & he is unable or unwilling. Also write to the management of the hospital where he works. Mediclinic has patient liason officers that have to make sure their patients are happy. Put a complaint. Email them. You are not the only person having this same issue. Making a case with the HPCSA will not help you in your case. Edit: I manage a heakthcare centre & deal with oatients like you everyday. It can be sorted even without his help.

Being a former patient of Head and Brain Operation done at Vincent Pallotti Hospital Cape Town in year 2017 it brings me enormous pain to watch my South African brothers and sisters suffer from the unethical actions of a doctor that our medical system HPCSA - that we are suppose to take pride in - approve a doctor to be active in the MOTHERLAND. I fully and understand why the patients resist going back for a head or brain operation as ANY human being is bound to be sensitive with one of the most valuable organs being the brain that has previously been worked on badly. Hopefully Minister of Health get in contact with them to show support as that could possibly be the ONLY way of getting the patients comfortable to go back for operation in the MOTHERLAND.

But my problem is some of our doctors in some African state the administration has collapsed partially or we have corruption and they allow illegal doctors to get paper work too. How do we confirm the qualifications of such doctors. I have seen the worst especially in private hospital where black investors own them here in south africa

It’s the South African version of Dr Death. I would have thought if there is an investigation into a medical practitioner they should at least be suspended until the investigation concluded. It’s astounding! I had faith in our medical system until now, and I thought this sort of thing only happens in the US where you can move from state to state to dodge prosecution. Now we have to vet the doctors before we allow them to treat us. 😢

It msut be hard to eventually find out that you are not fit for the job, after you have trained for years to become a neurosurgeon! Yet, you simply cannot endanger patients, just because you don't want to admit your inaptitude to yourself. You retrain for a less demanding medical specialisation or an entirely different profession. Neurosurgery in particular carries a high potential of permanently messing up a person's mental capacity and personality, not to mention fatal outcomes due to negligence or injury of vital brain areas.
