    We are such spoiled little children when it comes to these films and shows. I understand the MCU is the one giving us the content and so it’s hard not to get the expectations, but at the end of the day we have to take them for what they are, not what we were hoping for. Like the Disney plus shows, those of you born before 2000 do realize that we had to wait till 3 pm everyday/week to watch a new cartoon, and now we are getting feature film quality on a streaming service every week and we criticize it like it’s suppose to be an avenger(whichever one you want to pick) level experience. Take it down a notch and appreciate what we are getting. That’s all I want to say. MCU knows what it’s doing and I guarantee you Wanda will have her moment of turning her issues around and not left like she was in MOM

    I agree that people have a tendency to nitpick marvel movies for not delivering on things they never even promised and that's kinda irrational. But I also think it's bizarre to not critique something because a billion dollar company is releasing more high quality content than ever. Of course in some way that's amazing for us, but it's financially viable for them to do so. That doesn't make them bad or evil, but it also doesn't make it charity either, even if it's much more content than most of us got as kids. Its just a tv show, so people shouldn't take it so seriously, I agree with that. But I also, it's just a tv show, so regardless of how high def it is and how many big profile actors it has, that doesn't mean it should be above critique. People should just have reasonable expectations for what to expect from blockbuster Marvel movies, but that doesn't mean not holding it up to any expectations because it's supposedly better than what we got as children.

    The one thing I'll disagree with is the thinking of 'we're getting Fantastic 4/X-Men' I learned this the hard way when I was one of the many theorizing for Mephisto to show up in WandaVision. We didn't get something that was totally fan headcanon and that's why so many people felt like the finale couldn't stick the landing despite the whole show being great. Same thing happened here - fans theorized for really crazy shit, that this was gonna be a huge Avengers type film and it just wasn't that. That doesn't make it a lesser movie, in my opinion. If there was any character I had to bet money on seeing here, I thought it was gonna be Kang, or maybe Deadpool in an after-credits scene. That doesn't mean that X-Men/Fantasstic 4 aren't in play. The movie establishes that other versions of characters in other universes can look the same as our original (hence all 4 Dr. Strange variants we see being played by Benedict Cumberbatch). We already have a Fantastic 4 movie confirmed and Patrick Stewart playing Xavier keeps the X-Men in play. Plus, personally, I think introducing Clea and giving Strange the corruption of the Darkhold keeps things interesting.

    Agree w/ Jomi, that they need to temper their expectations. When they expect so many great things to happen (X-men, Mephisto, etc), you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Sports are a great example of this. You have a great off-season on paper & expect to contend. Then the season starts.....

    I love the breakdown but there are a handful of topics that I disagree with. Wanda, kidnapped an entire town, robbed families of their free will and mentally tormented them before even coming across the Darkhold. So, why are we calling her behavior post exposure to Darkhold, out of character?

  • @dj7607

  • @thedefinitionisthis

    @thedefinitionisthis

    I've seen people take issue with the fact that Wanda justifying her actions as her love for her children and being a mother being seen as a toxic trait, when in comparison to men citing fatherhood for some foolhearty actions, being seen as heroic. I understand that. But at the same time, they had built up this character of Wanda in WandaVision to go down this villainous path. I think people have a problem with Wanda's arc because the show and her feelings are 100% being seen through her POV, and therefore we see her in a more sympathetic light. But NOTHING she did in "Wandavision" was heroic. You're right: she kidnapped an entire town, robbed them of her free will, and tormented them. Consciously or not, that's still not okay. Did Dr. Strange bend the rules himself? yes, but at least he did it knowing the Avengers could potentially save/revive lives years down the line.... In the case of Wanda, it was all merely for her own personal therapy. I hated that Monica justified it at the end, but I did appreciate the town all looking at Wanda like "...this bitch." LOL. And i'm sorry, but the post-credit scene of Wanda researching the Darkhold, knowing damn well the risks of what kind of power and corruption that can bring, definitely signified that Wanda was going down an even darker path. Wanda in the comics has traditionally been a character that towed the line between friend and foe, and I like that the MCU is playing with that. When she was revealed to be the villain of the movie, I honestly was like "GOOD!" I feel for her character and her arc of grief & mourning, but she still did villainous shit in that show. It's kinda like the problem I have with people loving Loki. He's a legit asshole and villain who was all for genocide and ruling, and yet Marvel has found a way to make fans root for him. They're kinda doing the same thing with Wanda here.

    It was always a big worry for me when Marvel Studios decided to go from just 2 movies a year at the most to what is now 4 movies & 5 tv shows a year not just from a 'superhero fatigue' POV, but from a simple quality control standpoint. Such rapid expansion has pros & cons and some of those cons have been issues with the quality of both the storytelling & vfx of the movies and shows of Phase 4 so far! Hope I'm wrong, but it seems that as long as these projects continue to do relatively well financially & critically, Feige & Co are less likely to aggressively tackle this issue! Maybe even a slight scaling back to 3 movies & 3 shows a year might help address some of my issues, but can't see Disney/Marvel letting that happen :(

    Wait Jomi is 100% right lol how was what he said even a debate? Millions of people are casual viewers and don’t watch the shows. Some fans are getting fatigued and have quit the shows. All of these people, without the context of the shows, see the movie, hear the quick summary lines here and there, get the gist, move on and enjoy (or don’t enjoy whatever) the movie. Jomi is totally right that from a business standpoint the studio wouldn’t make it so that the movies are incomprehensible without having watched the shows because they’d lose so much money from casual fans. One liners for casual fans, all of the show connections and Easter eggs and all of that for the mega fans, everyone paying money to watch the movies.

    1st… Scarlet Witch is one of my Top 5 characters in the Marvel Comics (and this goes way back because I have been collecting since high school and I am 57yrs). Hello… You guys on Wanda are a little off on Wanda’s character arch. The Dr Strange MVM did a very good job on Wanda’s character. I would like to give my reasons on why I believe you are mistaken about how she was portrayed in this film. You’re talking as if Wanda was not leading down this dark road. Please remember when she 1st jumped on the scene, she was fueled by vengeance because of her parent’s death. Yes, she was an Avenger but this is after she was team Ultron and jump ship because they had different agendas on vengeance. Then immediately loose her home and brother in battle. She wanted to leave the Avengers to be with Vision until she got thrown into the ‘End Game’. This fight resulted with the lost a her love, Vision. This wrecked her mindset so bad that she imprisoned an entire town to create the family unit she dreamed. This turned her to fight Agatha, loose that family unit and lead her to the Dark Book (which we know can screw with a mind that’s already has been traumatized). So, this being said, how can you guys be surprised and upset on how Wanda became the Scarlet Witch and went bananas on the Illuminati. This was a great movie showing Wanda(Scarlet Witch) is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU.

    Why do we sugar coat the mcu. They gave us all the biggest moments in the trailers. They hyped it up with the crazy promotion so all the hype is indeed justified. Is that hard to see? I didn’t expect anything super crazy but i did expect an interesting concept of time and space with a fleshed out story. It was put together in a clumsy way. You could tell they went horror movie first then toned it back so the movie never found an identity. It didn’t flow at. Some parts were incredibly slow and other went by quicker than id like. Not nearly as good as it could’ve been. What’s weird is that ever nice Disney bought marvel all these content big creators are quick to sugar coat bad content.

    If she’d had some dream and realized somehow the dream was her and the kids in another universe, and they were in danger…then she needed to learn how to travel universes so she used the darkhold…then it corrupted her into thinking she had to kill America to get her powers…THEN I’d buy it. But THIS?! What they actually did? Hell no. It’s disgusting. It’s insulting. The Wanda here did this out of jealousy and a sense of entitlement. The Wanda at the end of WV had grown beyond that. If anything, she would have used the book out of a sense of needing to protect the children in other universes that she doesn’t have here. The book could then use that and corrupt it, but jealousy?! Turning her into the “hysterical woman” trope?! Idk if I’ll bother watching any more of these films honestly. There’s no redeeming this.

    The problem is I don't think she entirely moved passed those issues in Wanda vision. She mentally enslaved an entire town of people and to some degree was aware she was doing it. And she never really owned up to what she did or took accountability - she just run away. Wanda has shown herself capable of prioritising her own unhealthy attempts to deal with her trauma over other people's lives. She cared more about playing out her Westview fantasy than she did about the peopel it was hurting. And that doesn’t make her entirely bad, it wasn't entirely intentional and she was intensely traumatised with really no one caring to support or reach out to her to form a personal connection outside of 'we need this super powered being to use as a weapon/lock up because we're scared of her'. Doesn't excuse her actions of course, but it is relevant context. And it's also relevant context that she didn't fully take responsibility for what she did at Westview, and so didn't entirely grow from that. So it's not entirely out of character for her to be willing to do harmful things to other people to be with the people she loves, and I don't think that specific character flaw of hers was resolved or dealt with by the end of the show. That said, I *do* agree that it felt like they flattened her character quite a bit in MoM. She went from a complex morally grey character with competing motivations and even moral alignments, to her being a purely evil 'hysterical woman' obsessed with her kids and even willing to intentionally murder a child to get what she wants. And yeah the darkhold corrupted her, but that happened off screen and this is an artifact that we've seen very little of in the MCU. And even that aside - I think Wanda being villain is interesting, but the way they did it was not great. A lot of the moral complexity and the heart that made her an endearing character to so many people just kinda flew out the window. It felt like they leaned really heavily on what happened outside of the movie to narratively justify Wanda's behaviour in it, and that made her come off really flat. I enjoyed it because I happen to like seeing intensely powerful female villains fuck shit up lol, and I like horror movie aesthetics, and Elizabeth Olsen is a great actress. But some of the ways they did it were very much yikes, and when i think about this character as a whole, i'm pretty disappointed with how things went. I wanted Wanda to take responsibility for her actions and truly move on to define herself outside of just her relationships with other people and their expectations for her. Instead she (supposedly) killed herself after realising the extent of what she did and that she would never be with her children. Awful end for that character.

    @@Lisa_Flowers that's really well put! I admit I don't remember much about the end of WandaVision, so that's playing into how I saw her character. From what I recall she got rid of the hex and was weeping, not breaking down, just weeping in the bones of where the house had been. I read that as she was coming to terms what everything that's happened to her. As someone who has had intense grief, and it still pops up, I know it doesn't go away. I also know we tend to take it out on others. I can see her turning dark, breaking bad, I just don't like how it was done. If there had been a prologue, or even her own film that showed the time (which looks like YEARS after WV thanks to them stuffing the films and changing the timeline) we didn't get to see and more of her turn, I'd be ok with it more. All in all I'm tired of the trope of hysterical-emotional-woman-goes-bad. It's a tired trope that doesn't serve us any longer. It doesn't serve her character. It didn't serve Daenerys (it COULD have...if they'd not rushed the end of the show but I digress). Also...how did she even learn about America and her powers?? Did I miss that??? I might have spaced out in the movie
