Dr. Sean O’Mara- My Health Transformation from Unhealthy to Thriving

In Episode 69 of the Optimise Your Body podcast, we join Dr. Sean O’mara, a former unhealthy physician turned health optimization expert. Dr. O’mara shares his profound insights into optimizing body performance through innovative techniques. His journey begins with a recounting of his life, from a blue-collar upbringing to medical school, and highlights his struggle with chronic health issues, including erectile dysfunction, an enlarged prostate, heartburn, and precancerous esophageal lesions. He shares how adopting a Paleo diet significantly improved his health, while expressing frustration with a medical system that couldn't address his issues.
The episode explores health optimization through diet, exercise, and the microbiome, featuring stories like Carolyn, a 59-year-old social influencer, who transformed her health through a low-carb diet. It also delves into the role of gut microbes in cravings and the importance of MRI scans in assessing visceral fat. Throughout, you'll gain valuable insights into enhancing well-being by proactively adopting a healthier lifestyle free from processed foods and understanding the interplay between our bodies and microbiomes.
"You know, most people would be like, “Well, I'm so happy. I'm so happy and keen. I'm not waking up, mad as hell.” I was pissed off, so freakin mad, because what I realized in that epiphany was that I had been ripped off. I had decades of disease and medications and smart doctors, including me making decisions about my health care, while I literally was falling apart, just getting more and more medicine. And then a patient who I thought was like 23 or 24 turned out he was 17. Oh a freakin 17 year old punk tells me about Paleo and changes my life.” - Dr. Sean O’mara

The tough part is to get someone like me to throw all of the previous thoughts or experiments away. It's when you take away the major bad stuff for good and never touch them. Then mix in a healthy dose of happiness, positive media (music, funny movies, good books, success stories) competition, pushing your self to do it hard. No easy ways. All of you techniques do work. The hump of being stuck is a tough one to breakout of. You like me and many many many went to the bottom to then rise from the ashes. I gave up, it's been a year and half now. Best life is happening right now. I wish like many others on here they found the way in the teen's or 20's. or heck, my kids are given the opportunity to be happy healthy and they don't even need to know the bad way. We educate them on the what and whys we feed them the way we do. My oldest says, "Dad i know you think this is better for me with butter in it" lol my eyes cry every time. They got me. Non-fat yogurt is poison. For their body and emotions. High fat sweets definitely help vs Non-fat sweets. Dye loaded fat free is nuclear. Kids at school are un-controllable. My wife has mandated our kids get no dyes. That alone cuts down the garbage options. They get a variety of things and will reach for fruit and veg at various times. And when offered sweets they usually don't finish it. It warms my heart. The insulin/hormone/leptin signals are still working to not want to shove sweets in.

Kefir transformed my finger nails from extremely brittle to strong within days. But I still have edema, extreme chronic fatigue, pain and weight gain. I have been eating whole foods over a decade, intermittent fasting a year and a half, a year of keto/carnivore, 90 days of which was full carnivore, 3weeks of kimchee etc. one week of kefir. I have been sprinting for 2 months but my legs hurt. I am 70. During my 4th pregnancy my pea turned to a dribble but as a natural woman I dont have a prostate.

And i have no desire for cheat days ! And Don't mess with my meat 🍖 !

Same here. I’ve never been fully vegetarian, but I’ve gone long periods of having 60+g of fiber from only whole grains, legumes, veg ect, while still eating 200-300 grams of lean red meat a day. But it wasn’t until I cut all plant food (starting with whole grains and legumes, but later veg as well) that my body actually started functioning properly. Almost immediately I felt urges to be doing push ups, pull ups, and sprinting. Prior to that I was struggling to just get thru the day.

I typically go with the “Non-Sweet” fruits. Culinarily they’re considered vegetables in the chefs kitchen, but botanically their fruits, and that is red, yellow orange peppers that is zucchinis that is avocado, tomato, cucumber, and eggplant. All those are actually fruits botanically, but those are the carbs that I eat on a low carb diet so technically, I’m eating moderate proteins in the form of animal proteins. Lots of animal fat fats also from olives, I prefer to eat olives than to use olive oil and I prefer to eat avocados instead of using avocado oil, so whole foods, but contrary to popular belief, those are actually fruits non-sweet fruit. As for “fruit/fruit” I eat All types of Berries & Grapefruits-lemons & Limes NO TROPICAL Sweet fruits

So that's how I got to become a researcher. I said well I have got to figure this out. I've got to figure out what happened to me. Why didn't I learn about this in medical school. What the hell was I taught in medic school and so I became a researcher. I don't understand how people can be so moved/invested/inspired by someone parroting what we've known for years? Maybe it's the edgy pseudo-punk Billy Idol haircut.

No one else has been doing MRIs of people's visceral fat then implementing different modalities to reduce it for years.

@@jedvon2164 That's because it's totally unnecessary and over complicates shit. You know if you're fat and out of shape, and you know the solution. Get your diet in check and get on a properly planned exercise program. All he's doing is over complicating the process so he charge big $. The end result? Unnecessary complexity, confusion, barriers, excuses. Not to mention he's got people who have no business sprinting sprinting. The strength and condition equivalent of medical malpractice.

@@oldnatty61 People knew they're out of shape, sure, but not all of them understand that it directly correlates and causes so much disease. People know they need to get their diet in check, but he has the MRI data to prove which diet is the most effective. I've heard him provide several alternatives for people who can't sprint and he puts out a ton of information for free so I'm not really seeing the barrier here.
