If my memory serves me right, I think one of the reasons why V Shantaram filmed this scene this way was that he didn’t have much film reel left and couldn’t import more due to World War 2. Brilliant use of the limited resources. I remember watching this trivia in those small segments Star Gold used to run in between movies.

A lot of dramas are directed that way. Its not new or unusually great. It is very traditional to be honest. You can see the same scene being done today for comedic intentions.

The reason I believe is filmmakers feel the imagination of current audience has decreased. They prefer to shoot the scene rather than count on us (audience) to imagine from the sounds. Also now very few directors are fine with long shots. They will stage the scene where long shots can be avoided. The current audience is such that even if we lose our attention for 2 seconds, we will check phone notifications .

@@MirNovichok Doesn't mean only art movies must work or only social realism movies must do well at the box office. Have a broad-minded thinking and think, there are literally many genres and masala being one of them originated in India which gives immense entertainment to the larger middle class audience of India, do you think all are cinephiles like us? They just want entertainment so movies like RRR and KGF are hit and also movies like Kantara and Charlie 777 are also hit at PAN-India level.

That's such a brilliant scene. I love older movies where the camera stayed still and didn't move or cut much. Gave a feeling that we are present in the scene physically. This style is seen too much in Wes Anderson's films

Nice analysis to a wonderful film, based on a legendary personality.. I happened to screen this film for the NSS volunteers of a college.. 20 minutes in the faculty in charge changed the shemaroo DVD fr a one of the Welcome or Golmaal films.. I think a lot of our many movie industries stopped enhancing and also understanding the medium out of risk averse nature of the producers. Besides the film medium builds on a lot of associated art forms which are again considered by many to be the domain of some high browed few. Also, I can't say I've seen all of your videos yet, but I guess you are building towards tracing the genealogy of Indian cinema (especially acting) aesthetics coming out of theatre..say the Ram Leela and other folk traditions.. Rather than starting out, as for much of the western world ensconced in photography n the visual spectacle.
