If my memory serves me right, I think one of the reasons why V Shantaram filmed this scene this way was that he didn’t have much film reel left and couldn’t import more due to World War 2. Brilliant use of the limited resources. I remember watching this trivia in those small segments Star Gold used to run in between movies.
seriously that director was way ahead of its time ☺️ 1946 holly shit 😫

A lot of dramas are directed that way. Its not new or unusually great. It is very traditional to be honest. You can see the same scene being done today for comedic intentions.
youtube seriously needs to add the ❤️ icon, cause a 👍 ain't enough for this one 👏
the year is 1946, and that guy is psychologically manipulating his dad. all hail V. Shantaram

The reason I believe is filmmakers feel the imagination of current audience has decreased. They prefer to shoot the scene rather than count on us (audience) to imagine from the sounds. Also now very few directors are fine with long shots. They will stage the scene where long shots can be avoided. The current audience is such that even if we lose our attention for 2 seconds, we will check phone notifications .
Wow! Dr kotnis manipulated idea in his dad's mind way before Dom Cobb did with Fisher.

Underrated comment
The demand of glamorous films, the low IQ of audiences is stopping us.

No, the assumption of filmmakers that the audience has low IQ is stopping us.

@@rdpathan Considering the kind of mindless movies that've captured the pan-Indian audience's delight these days, I guess the OP commenter was right. Can't believe stuff like RRR and KGF is considered good cinema these days.

@@MirNovichok Doesn't mean only art movies must work or only social realism movies must do well at the box office. Have a broad-minded thinking and think, there are literally many genres and masala being one of them originated in India which gives immense entertainment to the larger middle class audience of India, do you think all are cinephiles like us? They just want entertainment so movies like RRR and KGF are hit and also movies like Kantara and Charlie 777 are also hit at PAN-India level.
the acting brilliance of the actor is phenominal.
"What the fuck is stopping us now" - Exasperation! :) True emotions!!
That's such a brilliant scene. I love older movies where the camera stayed still and didn't move or cut much. Gave a feeling that we are present in the scene physically. This style is seen too much in Wes Anderson's films
V shantaram ji...💐💐 a genius film director of indian cinema.
Yes. One of the best shots from the movie. Great storytelling.
That closing statement made me wonder and chuckle...
I love how unbiased, detailed and analytical you are. You are right What the f*ck stops today's film makers to do something intelligent
This is turning into a very good channel comparable to the likes of Every Frame A Painting and YMS. Keep up the good work.

I wish I could but working on these all alone when it is not your full time job results in fewer output...and unfortunately, with lesser quality as well.
Outstanding lesson. Thank you so much for this.
Love these videos. I find these very educational.
Bro your last line hit mi hard!! It's not only that but your true self came out! 👌🏼 Great Work 👍🏼
i feel that the way you analyze is lot similar to the channel- "Lessons from screenplay". i am really happy that someone from India is also doing the same of Indian content. hope you will up with lot other Indian cinemas. i request you to kindly do a analysis video of director's work like Zoya akhtar, Damien chazelle, Sanjay leela bhansali, David fincher and many more.
Your work is great. I hope we can have more videos like this about classic films of India.
Brilliant! Simply incredible Thank you for introducing me to such a beautiful technique
This is what I always thought about Indian cinema. A genuinely well made video.
love ur channel man
Your videos are amazing.
There's a similar scene near the end of Ivan's Childhood when Galtsev discovers what happened to Ivan in the prison. The visuals are in the present but the camera fluidly tracks the sounds in the past.
Loving the work, Nerdwriter1 meets Lessons from the Screenplay and have an Indian Child! Congratulations!
Wow.. You notice the details of a scene.. I have started watching movies in a different way all together after watching your videos
Loved it. Thanks for sharing
You are my type ... Just subscribed ..looking forward for the next , and I m sure I will not be disappointed.
Great observation! A film that recently surprised me with its use of flashbacks was this movie called 'your name.' Do check it out if you haven't already. It is one of the most visually and narratively inventive films to come out recently.

This is a very good dissection and nicely done
amazing as always
Exactly! We have forgotten to learn from the past. We are too lazy, lost-in-our-own-truths to respect history.
I wasn't even aware a "sound flashback" existed in movies before I watched this video. Great work!!!
u doin a great work man! keep it up
Seriously a great one👍🏻
_V Shantaram_ is one of the pioneers of Bollywood
u r doing a super great job.
OMG... THANKS FOR BRINGING THIS HERE...
Your last line nailed it.
This video was too good.
Reminded me of the letter scene in Kurosawa's Stray dog....But Shantaram took it to the next level
Loved this video
Superliking it Vinit!!! unfortunately V. Shantaram has become unsung/forgotten Heros of Indian Cinema.... He was way too ahead of the time, his films still pushes one into reflective mood. Thanks a ton for sharing, love you unbiased analysis of films, ! Keep going..
The Indian Cinema lost its charm as focus turned to greed from art.
Much of his theatre influence shows up in his color films, especially Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje & Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli. The song sequences are like moving paintings!
i was waiting for this..
Nice analysis to a wonderful film, based on a legendary personality.. I happened to screen this film for the NSS volunteers of a college.. 20 minutes in the faculty in charge changed the shemaroo DVD fr a one of the Welcome or Golmaal films.. I think a lot of our many movie industries stopped enhancing and also understanding the medium out of risk averse nature of the producers. Besides the film medium builds on a lot of associated art forms which are again considered by many to be the domain of some high browed few. Also, I can't say I've seen all of your videos yet, but I guess you are building towards tracing the genealogy of Indian cinema (especially acting) aesthetics coming out of theatre..say the Ram Leela and other folk traditions.. Rather than starting out, as for much of the western world ensconced in photography n the visual spectacle.
why did u stop making videos mate ? love to watch cinema by your eyes :) love from india
Why don't you start a series of great filmmakers ???? It would be a great chance to meet them through your vision and wisdom..
wonderful
Sadly, one of the finest videos on this channel has the least no of viewers. But then, that's life. :)
V. Shantaram also used to direct marathi plays and this device of sound flashback is oftenly used because a blackout in a play is considered as mood breaker in marathi theatre particularly .. plus I helps in cutting out the cost
Excellent video man. And yes, we all are still hopeful for the future of Hindi cinema. BTW, do you have any recommendations from the Indie cinema in India? Would love to watch some of them.
Finally I found the channel which thinks like me...great content
Talking of flashbacks, Kabali had pretty unique ones. Nice video by the way!
Become big my friend. Good Luck.
great one
Wow what a way of telling a story
Thanks bro
How can someone dislike it ?
That era will be back...

Hi Cinema Beyond Entertainment. I am waiting for your videos. Thank you so. Can you a do video on methods of story telling. Like earlier movies used to present then flashback then again present. But now they keep on switching between present and past. Please
😂 "what the fuck is stopping us now?!" Very aptly said
FUUUUUCCKKKKKK!!! That was amazing.......
"What the fuck is stopping us now??" YES
this was very important lesson.. we would like to meet u and learn from u.. can we?
Are you pursuing any course in film making? Would really love to know your sources of these unknown gems. BTW, really a great analysis.
I am hopefull for indian cinema

please make a video on Ritwik Ghatak's films..
that one dislike by johar 😂
In old hindi movies so many actors were from parsi theater background, that is why the acting looks like this.. it looks weird today
DO IRUVAR PLEASE!!
Vinit, why are visual flashbacks used more than sound flashbacks in modern filmmaking?
Your favourite word is "narrative". :) Dont try much to impress buddy. You are good.
C/O Kancherapalem (Telugu movie) new technique of flashback, you'll be surprised.
Highly commentable
Solapur✌️
great one vinit, and the people arguing about your ego don't give a fuck about them. PS: Some ego is good.
We, not doing it. We not making movies is what is stopping us. So, dear Vinit please let's make movies. TOGETHER.
review Moonlight .
Dr. Kotnis Zindabad!!!
@Cinema Beyond Entertainment Money. Money is stopping the directors to challenge the audience. Cinema is not an art now its a family business.
Money . less risk taking
