I hear a lot of my moviegoer of my age and younger, dismissing The Godfather as a long and boring film. This video is my humble attempt to analyse which I consider to be the greatest movie ever made. Hope I haven’t ended up embarrassing myself.
Movie Detail:
Film: The Godfather
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Cinematography: Gordon Willis
Editor: William Reynolds, Peter Zinner
Cast: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton

My wife and I spent what I felt was a surprising amount of time scanning for The Godfather movie reviews like this. In depth and breaking down how it was put together. We wanted something more than some 3-7 minute recap. We came across this after a few rewordings of our search. 100% what we were looking for. I'm honestly shocked there are not more solid breakdown reviews of this movie. We honestly felt, after just finishing watching The Godfather earlier tonight, that you could have made a longer video covering this movie. That's the only criticism we can give. We enjoyed this video. Good job.

I believe getting punched by the chief of police...carried a huge significance on Michael's psyche! Sometimes...we have to grow up, all at once! Michael fresh from war...for country he loved and believed in...yet the man that delegated the protection for the populist could be corrupted!!! Meaning that Michael can only trust himself to protect his family! I never doubted him after that scene...

In my opinion Godfather deals with the inability of Michael to carry his family along with his business. Vito was very sucessful and Michael was no way near him. There were people who helped and expected help from Vito. But Michael only had paid criminals on his side.

No bro it deals with the legacy of the criminal family and the journey of micheal from a naive to potential successor of the family business. This film is great because unlike other gangster movies which deals with the killings, beleaguers and all the violant stuff, it emphasizes on the family life of the gangster (of course the story was adapted from the novel of puzo, but portraying it on thr screen is a completely different and difficult thing).

Michael's choice to marry Kay made a huge difference in his family. Maybe it was inevitable, I don't know. But Kay, as portrayed in the movie, could not be the wife of a mafia don as Michael's mother was a wife to Vito. Kay simply could not let things rest; she could not stop digging around in Michael's business; she couldn't leave him alone in that respect. It could not work because of her. (Mind you- Kay, as she was portrayed in the movie, is completely different than the way she was portrayed in the book.)

Hey Vinit. I have been watching your videos for very long. This is my first comment on any of your videos. Since the moment I saw your first video, I have been aching to see you do an analysis of The Godfather, because somewhere in my mind I knew you would do it one of these days. The Godfather is my favourite book and movie. As is yours, judging by your comment below. I have lost count as to how many times I have gone through this story in written or motion picture form, but it amazes me even now, after 10 or so years have passed since I first read The Godfather. Every time I watch The Godfather, I find something new, I didn't in the past n times I watched the movie. I cannot begin writing the film's praises because that will take too many words. Instead, I will focus on appreciating the wonderful work you have been doing. From one cinema lover to another, thank you for doing this! Your silent patron.

I think it's because part of what makes part 2 so good is that it continues on from part 1. The story of 1 is more rewatchable and has a "happy ending" too which always satisfies audiences. Part 2 is more complex in my opinion which is why it may be a little overlooked

Your insights are generally well taken. There are a couple with which I take issue as an aficionado of the films. The first glimpse of The Godfather shutting out his family is not when the door is closed on Kay. It’s joy an act of shutting out at all, but one of protection by separating family life from business as he is acknowledged by the men surrounding him as the New Godfather, they kiss his hand and Rocco closes the door to the office. This is not unlike an earlier flashback scene where Dinero, young Vito, is eating with Clemenza and Tessio in the walk up apartment and he tells them that he will take care of the local don who is shaking them down for a piece of their criminal profits. In the scenes, Mrs. Corleone is behind the window separating the kitchen from the table. She casts a curious gaze, but this is her husbands business from which she is shielded, protecting her and giving her deniability for what is to come.

Thank God this came out sooner than I expected! And it's seriously way better, more personal and impactful than CineFix's trivia video on "The Godfather". But this has also made me greedy and I can't help ask you... Can we see a video on The Godfather 2 as well? Coz I believe it's a very nuanced and complex film, arguably better than the first one as well and it will be interesting to see your take on the same. On a completely different note, since you analyze films so well and go so much deeper than just their superficial aspects, I would really want to see an analysis on Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy, which I believe is one of the most layered and beautiful pieces of cinema ever produced!

"He remembered Clemenza had told him not to do this, to come out of the toilet and blaze away. But either out of some warning instinct or sheer funk he had not done so. He had felt that if he had made one swift move he would have been cut down. Now he felt safe and he must have been scared because he was glad he was no longer standing on his legs. They had gone weak with trembling." Mario Puzo.

While there are lot of interesting points, this by far is one of your most bland analysis till date partly maybe because godfather can be eternally dissected, but the points where I am most dissapointed is where there has been negligible reference to the book without reading which godfather is somewhat incomplete viewing. Michael is not the one trying to gain trust of his family, Rather he is the ulimate hesitant hero, dragged into the family matter just for love of his father. He doesnt marry appolinia out of guilt but rather an intense love at first sight scenario beautifully explained in the book. His return to kay is not one of buisness matters but him being desperate at one last attempt to connect to his former self, his promise that he will return to being THE Michael before all the family drama. just my two cents

Strongly disagree that it was bland. Agree that there were points brought out in the novel that are contradictory to his take on the film. I don't however see that Coppola would have necessarily stuck to Puzo's narrative so am unsure about Michael's motivation to marry Kay. The love at first sight element with Apollonia is extremely evident however in my view and I don't see Michael's guilt playing a part myself. Overall a very interesting video.

Whenever I watch your take on a movie, only one thing come to my mind. How well you know your subject. Of course that is prerequisite for the job. I want to understand different aspects of cinematography, story telling, etc of film making. Can you suggest some books to start with? It will be a great help for me. Thanks.

i waited and waited until i first saw the film for me to watch this video becoz i knew it wouldnt do justice to the godfather if i had watched the analysis first. But even after watching the film it was difficult to understand every aspect that mario and francis tried to depict through the film. This analysis has somewhat helped develop my understanding of this classic. Im glad to have witnesssed such a fine peice of art. Thanks to the makers of Godfather and cinema lovers like you who help keep the flow of cinema ongoing through such videos

Wonderful, well done! It shows your deep understanding of the film. It is understood that the director worked with the Mafia and had a private screening for them. They were satisfied with the film and incorporated some of the behavior depleted in the film in their everyday life.

Hey Vinit I am a great fan of your work. The way you analyze each and every aspect of the movie is just so delightful to watch. Will you consider analyzing any Wes Anderson movie. That would be great. Cheers...

Very detailed analysis ! But I would love to see the more analysis on light and shadow used in the film ! Many of the scenes of godfather just speak without the words but with the language of light and shadow , the contrast of light and shadow used is just amazing and it depicts the dark and the bright side of family simultaneously ! i think u should be given 2-3 min of ur video just on cinematography and light used in the film ! But anyways , atleast ur doing a great job to be in off stream !
