Dr. John Such A Night Piano Lesson Part 1

This version is from a video I found of Dr. John playing it in '81. Maybe look that up first before learning the song from me. It might help you get the feel of it. Plus he plays it a lot better than I. Enjoy.

This is my ultimate piano playing goal. Ever since I saw him play it on the Last Waltz with the Band. If I can manage this I can die happy. Brilliant videos. Thanks so much!

The Dr. has left the building and across this mortal plain . I cried tonight from sadness, as he boarded that heavenly train. He walked on Gilded Splinters with a Zulu staff of light and as he lifted into to the sky he whispered Such a Night...

Yes. I learned it from a number of his live versions.. mostly the one from 81' where he plays it solo. I'm sure there is sheet music for it, but I learn everything by ear.. never learned to read music. If I'm being honest I'm just a guitarist who plays a little piano. P.S I just finished that Nicky Hopkins Solo you requested, It's up. Enjoy

As another guitarist that plays a bit of piano (among other things) I would say that Such A Night is in F. The verse just starts on the IV chord, it's one of the best things about the . The chorus is I - IV and the dominant turnaround chord used throughout is varying versions of a C7. The main notes in the song are also not comparable to a B flat key sig. All in all, that makes it in F for me. :-) Thanks for a great video, I've never been able to play like Mac however hard I wished.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was the first song I learnt that made me feel like I was really playing music, and all thanks to this video. I agree, the performance he does is something out of this planet.

Here is a link for such a night with that chromatic ending. I figured out part of it. Live version/great audio. Starts off with some nice slow blues as an introduction. At 4:56 he jumps into a version of "big mac" and then goes back to such a night. At 6:50 he does this chromatic ending. Might be too long to explain. then again. Great turnarounds throughout the song. Going onto US blues after this!

Finally! I've been scouring You Tube for months, if not the past couple of years, looking for a good tutorial on this (my favorite Dr. John song)! The piano work in this is wonderful New Orleans flavor ivory tickling at it's finest! I can't believe you describe yourself as a "guitarist who plays A LITTLE PIANO"!!! I'm a piano player who is challenged by this! Great job and thanks for sharing this:-)

A cool way to re-phrase that intro/turnaround is to arpeggiate that Dm/A A7/G F#dim (no 3rd) in a descending fashion over the F to Bb Walk.

Thank you for posting this. Trying to learn this for a show, but I'm primarily a guitarist. Piano is an amazing instrument. Very easy to understand conceptually and it takes little strength to play (compared with stringed instruments that is), but getting my hands to relax and play independently has been the challenge.

Rich Mash It's not that I want to become some world class pianist, it's just nice to have different tools to write all the shit you hear in your head. Piano's so percussive and you can form much more interesting inversions very easily. If my hand could stretch the whole fretboard I could make some cooler chords potentially :)

Thank you very much man. I'm so glad people are getting good use out of these lessons. I have not yet heard his live endings so I'm afraid they're not in the lesson. I can always add it in later. I've added Ramble On Rose & Ten Jed to the list. What I'll do is compile Keith Godchaux's best versions of these songs and try to make a lesson out of it. Europe 72' will definitely be in the mix.

LOL, yeah I gave up trying to find stuff out from online chord charts as they are well meaning but usually incorrect :-) Forgot to add, after he jumps all over the place, the ending is a classic blues ending in F. This vid has got me keen to get back to the piano and use some of the ideas here and work on my own. He never plays it the same twice, which is good enough for me. Thanks once again.

Yeah, I could definitely see that. I've never really study theory.. just picked up things here and there. Chord charts online just say Key of Bb. The part that makes it mysterious for me, is when he goes through the changes.. F, A7, Dm walk down to F9 for the turn around, then up to Bb for the second verse. But I can see what you're saying with the melody notes.. F, G, A, G, F. I always thought it just changed the chords from Bb, to Gm7, to Bbmaj7, working off the Bb major scale.

Thanks so much for this.......you nailed the chords and wal-ups, and its not an easy tune to get. If I can give you a suggestion (I live in New Orleans by the way).....its "and-a two" beat that you have to get, in your left hand.

Hey Tyler, thnx very much. Wondering if u live in the LA area. If so, would be interested in taking some piano lessons from u. If not keep the videos coming...hopefully my fingers will ultimately behave better. Do u have one for Mac's Live Mountain Stage version where he does some incredible piano solos before and after the vocal portion of the song?

Would you mind me asking, at the very end of this lesson , you talk about practicing the pentatonic major and minor scales, of which scale do you mean, is it the F major and minor pentatonic, or Bb ones ? Not sure which ones you were playing ? Brilliant lesson thanks again .

I'm assuming trying to learn this on a 72 key piano would be futile. (must upgrade, 88 is the only way!) Dr John has some lovely bass in his style. I'm taken with it, I've only been playing for a year or so...too much to try to tackle? Thank you for your instruction.

It's in F. B flat to B flat minor is the classic minor plagal cadence to the tonic of F. IV IVm I is one of the most common cadences in popular music. Obviously he plays the F7 but this is The Blues after all. You can hear the key centre really obviously in the chorus. Really nice tutorial. I'll be working on this tomorrow. Thanks.
