Dr. Jane Goodall's Message on World Swift Day 2024

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Happy World Swift Day! 🐦 Today we’re celebrating the birds that fly 200,000 miles a year, sleep on the wing (meaning they can enter a state of rest or sleep even while in the air), and can stay airborne for up to 10 months! These incredible creatures are facing habitat loss and declining insect populations. Help them by getting the word out because as Jane says, more we know, the more we care, and the more we care, the more we help! 🌿

Thank you Dr. Goodall for this video, amazing information, and encouragement. I live in Portland Oregon, where you may already know, about 16,000 swifts visit Chapman Elementary School each fall during their migration. They show up in the evening, and it is amazing to watch them swirling down from the sky and fit themselves into the old chimney. I have heard that the school has preserved this chimney for the annual migration, and updated the heating system for the school using other means. Glad my city seems to be doing its part......

I live in the south of England and can confirm these amazing birds are in decline. 10 years ago, I would see them everyday and even their arrival was early May most years seeing loads of them. Last I noticed I hardly saw them at all. This year I have see about 5 and they arrived only this last week on Wednesday. I saw 1/2 today. So happy Dr. JG is promoting their welfare. I hope the message spreads about these incredible birds.

In the words of the song, "What a wonderful world". We cannot replicate this, we cannot start again from nothing, we have lost too much already and Jane Goodall and others have warned over and over about the destruction of the natural world. I love the swifts. I love their courage and energy and their freedom as they sail across the sky. For God's sake and that of humanity, we must protect nature and this beautiful, unique, amazing, staggering Earth that is our only home.

I raised and released common swifts in the past 12 years among other wildlife. The care and the accommodations for raising them are very different to other wild birds. It felt always nearly like an honor to be near them and the moment, they take off when they are ready to go was every single time breathtaking.

It was Chimney cleaning that I heard a Swifts final sounds of death. When you hear that, you will be changed forever, and you may recognize that sound to take extreme action with favorable results. Learning how to do the right thing means that you will always fight for the rights of the sweet birds, that like to live near and with people, and celebrate doing the right thing so all can learn how to stop hurting our feathered friends. Ecosystems stay in balance, and its designed to work that way, long before we were here.

They are my favorite bird.. I had some nesting in my chimney outside of Portland Oregon. I loved watching the circle and dive into the chimney at night. They and my 25 pair of swallows are gone, they just did not come back, that was maybe 8 years ago. For a while there was a pair of swallows that came every year. It broke my heart. There were no insects in that area even tho I had gardens and ponds to produce insects. I did not use pesticides but the county did. I called Audubon and asked them why they weren't saying anything about this, they changed the subject. I moved to Southern Oregon where there are many insects but no swallows here to speak of and none so far where I live.

Thank you so much for your message! I would not have known anything about swifts where I live (Mid-Atlantic state of Pennsylvania in the US) were it not for seeing swift "chimneys" in some of our county parks! I love to see them swoop and dive as I walk along the lakeside, where cormorants, blue and green herons, osprey, bald eagles, kingfishers, aquatic fowl and more also live and thrive. Each built swift "chimney" has signage explaining why the structures are there, and over the years, I'm positive that many people understand these birds' behaviors, though they may not realize they are threatened. When one flies by me or swoops in front of me, I get a fleeting chance to see it up close -- stunning! (Yes, the local variety here is the Chimney Swift!)

May this swiftly be extended to reach all representatives & leaders in a way, with an appeal to have them realize that representing us people would be better, would be about time too, cuz we would save the swift habitats worldwide. Now a question, do swallows fit the Swift category, cuz they fit the swift description & are considered as "day bats" cuz they eat mosquitoes by day, complementing bats' nocturnal behaviour. So instead of killing mosquitoes, just keep these ever entertaining birds around. Along with dragonflies & bats too, would all vie for mosquito population. Then you can consider the odd mosquito bite as a sort of inoculation to help boost immunity, ^^shrug^^.
