I thought that the last time that he was on stage with Prince was at the Paisley Park celebration 2000 performing America with Dr. Fink, Bobby Z, and BrownMark. The fans gave Doctor Fink a WONDERFUL reception after his synthesizer solo on America and he told him that he STILL got it. I know because I downloaded it from Napster 24 YEARS AGO and listened to the whole show for days.

The loss of Vanity was too much for Prince and he arguably ended it 2 months later

Only 1% of the SOTT movie is actual footage from concerts in Belgium and The Netherlands. The remaining "concert" footage was shot on the soundstage at Paisley Park with the band 'lip-syncing to audio recorded at those concerts. (And "U Got The Look" wasn't taped at a concert at all.) Fink's claim that it was just some close-ups etc. is incorrect.

While you are correct in that a large proportion of the Sign o’ the Times movie was indeed reshot at Paisley Park for the benefit of close-ups and insert shots, you’re claim that only “1%” of the original footage remains in the Cut is a bold one at best. As for “U Got the Look” - that was filmed on location at Palais Omnisport de Paris in France on June 16th, 1987. Around 150 invitations to participate as extras in the video were handed out to attendees of the previous night’s concert on June 15th. Shooting began at 6pm and ended around 3am. During a break for lunch, Prince performed a short acoustic set and threw in a 10 minute drum solo for good measure.

@@fang_uk On the Blu-ray you can clearly see when original footage is used: the picture quality drops tremendously. It is well known that the footage shot in Antwerp and Rotterdam was unusable, and in the movie it is basically only used for shots where you can see a large crowd. An example of actual concert footage is early on in the song "Sign O' The Times", when Prince says "uptown" or "Rotterdam", where there is a wide shot where the flashing lights show a large audience. Note how the picture quality drops tremendously: suddenly there is a lot more grain than in the shots just before or after. The shot barely lasts two or three seconds. Same with a shot in "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" where the audience flicks their lighters on and off in sync to the beat: massive grain, and everything is out of focus. There's a lot of footage at the start of "Forever In My Life" and at the end where there are large crowds visible, but even that footage is intercut with close-up crowd shots which I bet were filmed at Paisley Park. The rest of it was filmed at PP. There is plenty of outtake footage that is circulating, even on this here website. There is for instance a video which combines the outtake footage of four different cameras for the entire performance of "Hot Thing". Why film all that for "close-ups and insert shots"? They filmed for *six days* at Paisley Park. (Source: princevault.com/index.php?title=Film:_Sign_O%E2%80%99_The_Times ) That's not just for some "close-ups and insert shots". The movie is in total 85 minutes. One percent of that is just under one minute, and IMHO that's a generous estimate of actual concert footage. Consider that there are several vignettes (e.g. the first two minutes of the movie), plus there's the five+ minutes long video for "U Got The Look" (which is followed by another 30 second vignette). The end credits are five+ minutes long.

@@bertcielen8709 Some interesting info. there for sure, thanks for the added context. I’ve seen the outtakes, I remember when they originally leaked onto the bootleg VHS market back in 1989! I’m aware of the filming at Paisley too - I think somewhere between the both of us lies the truth tbh. Either way, I think we can both agree it’s a joy to watch. To close, I know someone Stateside who owns many (if not all) of the original Master copies of the rushes - it’s literally a big box full of them. Thing is, they would no doubt need to be baked before any attempt at transferring them was made, and he’s had them years now and as far as I’m aware has yet to do so. I’d be surprised if they’re not crumbling to dust by now tbh. One thing I *would* love to know is why Prince sold the rights to the Movie to a 3rd party. Very unlike him. I can only presume it was a way to gain swift funding for the extra filming at Paisley. That idea certainly seems to track, but it remains a highly unusual move for him all the same considering over the years how he went back to people he worked with in the earlier part of his career and bought up a lot of stuff - a prime example being him reaching out to Chuck Statler in 2010 and coming to an agreement where he bought the work prints, live Met Center footage and all of the original 16mm reels shot for “The Second Coming”. I’m just hoping we’ll finally get to see that, Al Magnoli’s “Lovesexy” tour documentary as well as the “3121” film someday - although I do wonder if the latter will be less a film and more a mini-movie than anything else. Still, will be wonderful to see. All best!
