Dr. Eric Berg gets fact-checked by MD PhD doctor

Do Dr. Eric Berg's ideas on cholesterol, diet and health match the science? Dr. Eric Berg goes over his wife's cholesterol values. Here's a look at Dr. Eric Berg's views on cholesterol and heart disease.
We got a ton requests from you to comment on dr. eric berg going over his wife’s blood work.
Total cholesterol=not the best marker, but it associates with cardiovascular disease, with heart disease.
2018 American Heart Association Guidelines:
“optimal total cholesterol=about 150. populations with cholesterol in this range manifest low rates of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease"
scientific advisory on dietary cholesterol: ‘no significant association with cardiovascular disease risk’. this is the science advisory on dietary cholesterol
dietary cholesterol= cholesterol in your food. Serum cholesterol=level in the blood, in our blood work.
He’s talking about serum cholesterol, total cholesterol= total cholesterol in your blood. but the link is on dietary cholesterol
total cholesterol associates with cardiovascular disease risk but there are better markers. LDL-cholesterol is better. nonHDL-cholesterol is even better. apoB is the best. Dietary cholesterol associates with cardiovascular disease in some studies, not others
Lipids travel in lipoproteins. cardiovascular disease (CVD) is about lipoproteins, but most public discourse focuses on lipids, the cholesterol, good/bad cholesterol, but its high lipoproteins that raise risk
lipoproteins=vehicle, cholesterol=passenger. apob=best metric. apoB measures vehicles. lipids, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol etc measure passengers
sdLDL = harmful, large LDL = fine? high cholesterol ok as long as particles are large??
if 2 populations have same cholesterol, those with smaller particles tend to have higher risk. but for the same cholesterol People with smaller lipoproteins have more of them
Particle size could be the cause of risk or an innocent bystander
at a given level of LDL cholesterol, individuals with small LDL particles have higher risk. but at same LDL-cholesterol, the ones with smaller particles also have more particles
it is the number of LDL particles, not LDL size or the amount of cholesterol, that is the principal determinant of heart disease risk
association of LDL size with risk loses significance when adjusted for particle number, Apo B
apob measures particle number. particle size correlates with risk but after you remove apob, or particle number from the equation, particle size no longer predicts risk
1) statins, lower risk yet reduce large LDL
2) patients with familial hypercholesterolemia have mainly large LDLs, and are at high risk, indicating large LDLs are not benign
All ApoB lipoproteins under 70 nm in diameter, including VLDL remnants and LDLs, flux across endothelial barrier
all ApoB-containing lipoproteins, including VLDLs and their remnants as well as LDLs, have approximately the same effect on risk of cardiovascular disease per particle
the decrease in risk per VLDL decrease was the same as the decrease in risk per LDL decrease. Thus VLDL and LDL pose equal cardiovascular risk
LDL subclass measurement does not add independent info to LDL concentration (number of particles, apoB) along with standard risk factors (diabetes, smoking, BP, family history)
don’t know your apoB? LDL-c and HDL-c are rough estimates but they can be off. when in doubt get ur apoB
‘sdLDL is a marker of inflammation’. sdLDLs are markers diabetes, IR, obesity. they associate well with heart disease because they’re a marker for many issues
Replacing refined carbs (table sugar, candy, white bread, cookies, pizza etc) with unrefined carbohydrate from whole grains or unsaturated fats associated with lower CV risk

Thank you !! For years I followed dr Berg and quit taking my statins, until I heard from Dr. Attia how important apo b test was, to measure risk for cardiovascular disease and then you explained so well. I’m back with the medicine in a very low dose and it’s working great for my results in apo b levels.

Does the health advice help you reach your goal? For example, i'm on a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. I also do intermittent fasting. I lost an immense amount of weight, I can now exercise (I couldn't before because of many weight related issues), I feel rejuvenated, and my colon polyps have decreased dramatically. So, Dr. Berg's advice worked for me. Would it work for you? Try it. It's with hands-on experience that you'll know.

There's bits of good advice found in MOST of these guys. But they have to keep churning out content, so they sometimes resort to having to put out videos with some more dubious claims, and even stretching the truth. You have to use your own sense of what seems reasonable and to not take any advice as the gospel truth. Also for your personal health, claims made by a KZread doctor simply may not be wholly or entirely applicable to your own situation. That's where you have to check with your own physicians.

I listen to my body , I read, listen, do my research ,but make the decision, that I deemed right for me. Nowadays doctors want to believe that they are God. but I have news for them. I agree with what you are saying but how do you know which research you can even trust. The whole health care system is so corrupt people don't know where to turn. Secondly, it's not too difficult to see why he is so popular if you think about it. Keto diet does help with weight loss and a large majority of Americans are overweight/obese so ANYTHING that helps get weight under control would obviously greatly improve your health. Lose weight by eating less and increase your activity(exercise) and you health will improve...hmmm?

Thank you for this illuminating video. I followed Dr. Berg for a year and lost a lot of weight. I also quit taking my statin, influenced by Dr. Berg and many other apparent authorities on KZread. (That was my mistake, and I take responsibility for it.) At the end of the year I had lost 60 pounds and reached my goal weight. Then I had my cholesterol levels checked. They were so high they were terrifying. I immediately quit keto and started my statin again. My cholesterol is now (7 months later) back in the very low range. I have not gained any weight back, despite slowly building up to eating about 50% of my daily macros in carbs. In the meantime, I noticed one of two truly stunning errors in Dr. Berg's videos that made me question if he actually reads or understands his lectures before reading them out on camera. For example, in one video he warns us to stay away from a certain vegetable or fruit because it contains 360 grams of carbs. I don't remember which specific fruit or vegetable it was. I thought that it was impossible for a single fruit or veggie to have that many carbs. (And I am not a doctor or a scientist.) So I checked. Turns out it was actually 3.6 grams. His editor made a mistake, and apparently left out a decimal point in the hand-written notes that Dr. Berg was reading from. Somehow, Dr. Berg apparently lacked enough scientific understanding to immediately get that as he read out the outrageous error. He did say something like "Wow, that's surprising." No, it's not surprising, it is downright impossible, and any expert should absolutely know that. I continue to think some of his videos have some value, but I realized I need to fact check everything I watch and not take anyone on faith, regardless of how popular or charming they are. Nowadays, every time someone makes a wild or absolute claim on KZread, I Google "academic articles on xxx" and do my own fact checking based on published scientific articles that have been rigorously peer reviewed. They are harder to read than watching a video, but well worth the effort. I especially enjoy reading meta analyses, which summarize multiple research studies.

I have had type 2 diabetes for about ten years now. The condition was “preceded” by a diagnosis of fatty liver and a condition termed as metabolic syndrome. I was advised by a physician that there was little that could be done about fatty liver and that it was unlikely to be reversed. Of course exercise and a change in diet to a mediterranean style diet full of low glycemic index carbs was recommended. I started seeing an endocrinologist four times a year. The endocrinologist put me on Atorvastatin (a statin), Losartin (for high blood pressure) Metformin (an oral diabetes medication), Basaglar (an extended release insulin) Jardiance and Trulicty. This cocktail of drugs was initially moderately successful in lowering my A1C. I started taking 20units of Basaglar but as the years passed, I had to increase the dose to the point that I was taking 120 units of insulin but was still getting blood sugar readings above 200 after meals. I also developed fibrosis of the liver which gradually progressed to a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver. Panicky, I decided it was time to try something else. Two life changing events happened about a year ago. 1) I listened to the audio book The Diabetes Code by Dr Jason Fung. 2) I subscribed to Dr Bergs channel and began routinely watching his livestream and videos. Both explain that it is INSULIN RESISTANCE that is the culprit with type two diabetes and that it makes absolutely NO SENSE to fight insulin resistance by taking more insulin. This made a lot of sense to me. I started on Keto combined with intermittent fasting. 9 months later, I am OFF every single medication yet my A1C which was 8.9 previously is down to 6.1. I have lost about 35 pounds and all of my numbers (including my LDL cholesterol) blood pressure and even my heart rate (which was previously elevated) are all in the normal range. The swelling in my abdomen from fatty liver has virtually disappeared. I am living walking proof that Dr Bergs advice is solid. I feel so much better and these two internet doctors have my gratitude.

this is the society-wide problem we have. some doctors aren't familiar with the evidence on lifestyle/nutrition and the impact it can have, frustrating patients into falling back on influencers who are aware of some of the potential of lifestyle but are unfamiliar with the scientific evidence in general. the public is stuck. fatty liver and metabolic syndrome are routinely improved in studies involving weight loss. so is HbA1c. it's tragic that some doctors can't relay this simple message congrats on your improvement!

@@NutritionMadeSimple I appreciate the response and insight. I might add that while it has taken about 9-10 months to lose the weight on Keto with intermittent fasting, the impact it had on my daily blood sugar levels while also increasing my energy level was almost immediate. Doctors are telling me that Keto is unsustainable ..when I asked why, they advised that the consumption of so much fat will result in heart disease, arteriosclerosis and the like. I was advised to continue to take the statin. I have decided not to take it against their advice. I recently had an ultrasound done with the result being no signs of arteriosclerosis …my blood pressure issues seem to be the result of portal hypertension with the liver. Regardless, even prior to trying Keto, I ate a pretty healthy Mediterranean style diet and didn’t drink or do any drugs. The only thing that has worked and allowed me to lose this weight is the cutting out of ALL processed sugar and limiting the carbs to under 30g a day. Just curious about your feelings on Dr. Jung and his books. Unlike Dr Berg, He IS a medical doctor but offers very similar advice in his book “The Diabetes Code”

I am a Dr. Berg fan. I subscribe to the Keto way of eating because I have been obese for many years and my blood work has historically been scary. After 6 months, I just had my blood tested again and it is the best it’s ever been. Every test was within range except free testosterone % which was low. I’ve lost 40 pounds as well. My doctor has taken me off 2 of 3 high blood pressure medicines. He won’t release me from the last one until I’ve demonstrated consistent discipline to diet and exercise. I no longer take Aricept nor Namenda, (I was diagnosed by Emory Brain Center in 2014 with Degenerative Brain Disease NOS). Additionally, I have discontinued Adderall, Cymbalta and Nexium. You are spot on when you say life style change (diet & exercise for me) can make a difference. My doctor always preached this but I never took action until my coronary calcium scan came back at 24. The reality of plaque accumulating in my arteries scared me. That said, I found your critique of Dr. Berg very professional as you targeted the message in lieu of the messenger. I too winced at the title of his video. It’s up to each person to carefully examine what they hear on KZread and it’s beneficial to have individuals like yourself to sound the alarm when information is flawed. Thank you.

About one minute into this video, I paused to review Dr. Berg's, visited the references, and arrived at the same conclusion. It's easy to see this as an unforgivable disservice, but I view it simply as a mistake. My hunch is that he's addressing the serum cholesterol spike often observed in patients on ketogenic diets -- some of whom he coaches professionally -- and he's attempting to quell a panic among his viewership. (Just a hunch.) I do not blindly trust Dr. Berg, partly because I know him to practice Scientology, which imposes a huge cash flow demand on its adherents, leaving him with every motive to deceive people. If, however, you view enough of his content, it becomes quite evident that Dr. Berg possesses a broad knowledge regarding nutrition, metabolism and endocrinology which he shares freely. He makes every effort to be diligent in his research, and relies on reputable sources of information. His typos and mispronunciations can be hilarious, but who's perfect? (At least he doesn't say "prostrate cancer!") I accept your criticism on this video, to the extent that it is fair and accurate, however I challenge you to spend a little time reviewing more of his content, and see why so many people have come to trust him. While Dr. Berg is by no means an infallible information source, I can tolerate little flubs, because I also view content from Dr. Sten Ekberg, Thomas DeLauer and other keto advocates, who cover much the same territory, from different perspectives. I find that referring to multiple resources and reading between the lines helps ensure that I wind up harboring fewer misconceptions. (I also spend on the order of 3-4 hours weekly, scouring PubMed for health information.) I feel that increasingly, MD's are being reduced to pill pushers. I absolutely believe in allopathic medicine, when it comes to handling a medical crisis, but I'm less impressed with its track record, managing chronic conditions. In particular, general practitioners do their patients a great disservice, by throwing pharmaceuticals at symptoms without first confirming/remediating nutritional status. Being reflexively handed a prescription for my symptom feels like asking a mechanic to research my vehicle's CHECK ENGINE light -- only to have him invest all of twenty seconds into hiding it behind a strip of electrical tape, charging me $60 for the service, and finally telling me that I'll have to buy a new strip every month, for the rest of my life.

My sense is that Berg, a chiropractor, has his team put notes together and he delivers them on his whiteboard without deep understanding. He has a certain way of delivering the info that makes it sound like he’s speaking from clinical knowledge, though if you pay attention you can tell that it’s closer to reading from notecards. It’s no accident that he has a video for virtually every topic - he’s obviously very interested in being a top KZread “doctor,” and for that he’s been successful.

I think that part is pretty obvious - that he is a puppet in a way (a nice one, I enjoy listening to him) but recently his airbrushed look in his latest videos has me thinking that his videos might now actually be Deepfakes - so he has a stand-in with Dr Berg's face plastered over it - and we're not even seeing the actual man delivering those scripts anymore anyway. That turns me off even more than listening to someone give you alternative health advice that you can take with a grain of salt but may actually benefit from. We have no hope of deciphering honest advice when we aren't even looking at a real human anymore. I don't have evidence for my claim but if you go and watch a few Deepfake videos, you'll see what I'm talking about when you look at his more recent ones. Something's not right about them.

A common myth Chiropractors undergo a significant amount of training. They complete about 8 years of higher education before they are licensed. Chiropractors tend to have 4 years of undergraduate education. Having obtained a degree in biology or kinesiology after having taken courses in sciences, such as biology, chemistry, psychology, and physics. They then attend a chiropractic graduate program. On average, these involve 4 years of education with a total of 4,200 instructional hours in course credits which also include nutrition. In North America when they graduate chiropractors can use the title of Dr of chiropractic. Dr Berg might not have perfect knowledge but his presentations are important for helping people understand insulin resistance and prediabetes, and how to reverse high blood sugar which damages organs and blood vessels whilst following a healthy diet. He delivers nutritional info in short bytes and tries to simplify complex processes. It might not be perfect but his channel has helped so many people to make a start on low carb diets and in the process reverse diabetes in people following him. As an introduction to the low carb concept i found the channel good to get me started. Once I got into it I found many other practitioners, researchers and MDs through LOW CARB DOWN UNDER conferences posted on you tube. So my advice to people is "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater". The info is free so you have not been tricked in order to get access. As to supplements and books no one obliges you to purchase them.

You're so right that there's so much misinformation. It's so easy to be lured in by attractive video formats and charismatic figures. It's also so easy to get lost in discussions that talk about isolated nutrients that somehow convince you to make drastic choices that end up throwing you off balance. Even if you wanted to go Vegan or WFPB, there's so many ways you can go wrong. You can get stuck watching people eat only raw foods or only fruits, or Salt/Oil/Sugar free, list goes on and on. Bottom line, eat a balanced diet and don't vilify macros. Eat variety of foods to cover your nutrient needs and don't eat in a caloric surplus chronically. I want to thank you for confirming what I believed. Dr. Berg was one of the first people that I followed when I decided to make life style changes for my health. Some of the things Dr. Berg didn't make logical sense. Dr. Berg is not a medical doctor he's a chiropractor. I stopped following him months ago. Dr. Berg did help me make some improvements to my health but I evolved further on my own. I was pre-diabetic for over a decade and fixed it. I lost 25 pounds. My blood pressure has also returned to normal. What I really appreciate was a in depth analysis on lipid panels and Apo-b. I'm hoping that when I have my lab work done this next week that most of my tests show improvements. I was also on a statin drug for twenty years. I no longer take statin medication but I did it right with the help of my doctor. My cholesterol panel is back to normal without a statin. I wanted to thank you for all of your hard work giving your viewers realistic tools to improve our health markers. What I have learned is that processed food, is the one thing my body can no longer handle in large amounts. I still can have a occasional pizza or ice cream but they are treats and not the norm. Indeed - keto and carnivore is all the rage in America because the standard American diet is shit (and more specifically, sugar rich). Outside of the US, however, the French and Italians eat carbs alongside meats and fats and the same can be said for the Japanese and South Koreans. Why are their diets relevant to this discussion? Because the people in these nations live longer, on average, than anyone else on earth, and because those who subsist on an entirely meat or fat diet have an unfortunate habit of dying young - heart disease and cancer beg the primary culprits. By the time Berg's acolytes have discovered this, it'll be too late.

If the genesis of cardiovascular disease is the oxidation of LDL that gets into the wall of the arteries. In my little lizard brain I would be more concerned with how do I reduce or eliminate the oxidation process? What causes the oxidation to occur? What lifestyle choices causes the greatest damage to the endothelium cells of the cardiovascular system? Before I go running to the medical deities for a lifetime regiment of a drug to mask a problem what lifestyle changes will give me the biggest bang for the buck?

Lot of BS on internet unfortunately, specialy about nutrition. One of the most popular proponents of vegan food (and fervent animal activist) sometimes completely misinterprets studies which he always (quickly) shows during his lectures but I always stop the video to read those studies outside of his highlighted parts and occasionaly find opposite arguments in those. Can't help it because I read scientific magazines my whole life and I know many claims by those YT "doctors" are completely bogus and sometimes dangerous. My friends fall for them regulary, but hey they use crystals and budist' bells. One even sent some money to "his girlfriend" in Nigeria with me begging not to sitting right next to him. It is laughable really and so bad that it almost looks like he is doing it on purpose. This tells me that those studies he cited might as well have been a link to a guide on how to make your pet guinea pig perform circus tricks, since nobody actually checks them. The first link in Dr. Berg’s videos is an article from the National Institute of Health. The abstract states “ It has been well documented that sdLDL has a greater atherogenic potential than that of other LDL subfractions and that sdLDL cholesterol (sdLDL-C) proportion is a better marker for prediction of cardiovascular disease than that of total LDL-C.” Dr. Berg’s videos does not have anything about dietary cholesterol. I’m curious why you did not select the first link because that is what he appears to have based his video on, or at least used it to support his beliefs. Can you do a second video based on the first link? I always like hearing multiple views (sometimes opposite) on topics because there might some truths on all fronts.

  • @NutritionMadeSimple

    @NutritionMadeSimple

    2 жыл бұрын

hi Darrell, good question, we did check the 1st link (I was familiar with that review), the explanation is essentially the evidence we went through in the video. sdLDL and sdLDL-c can indeed be good *markers* but when you adjust for confounders (e.g. sdLDL is a correlate for both ApoB and diabetes, obesity etc) typically all particles appear similarly harmful. Something can be a good marker and correlate well with disease risk and yet provide no direct benefit/harm (see the ashtray example). When they say sdLDL has greater atherogenic potential, that refers to different properties of the particle (oxidizability, half-life etc) but direct tests indicate equal atherogenicity. Experts have speculated that small LDLs may penetrate the wall more often while large ones carry more cholesterol, averaging out the harm... hope that helps!
