Dr. Eleanor Arroway meets Palmer Joss, who gives her a compass | Contact (1997)
A scene from the 1997 film "Contact" starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey in which he gives her a toy compass from a Cracker Jack box, which she then gives back saying, "You better keep this. Might save your life someday."
This is a great film that everyone should see, so go buy a copy (it's out on BluRay) or stream it when you get the chance.

Alright alright alright
"Arecibo, right?" "Does it show?" "uh, yeah...Cracker jack?" RIP Arecibo :(
I love her long hair! Big time Jodie fan!
I shudder when I think about if she hadn’t taken that compass.

He still looks handsome. In The Gentleman he looks the same, I love Matthew
fantastic scene. Amazing movie.

What a stunning spunk! Both of them but him...
I love this scene. The way they set up the nerd vs jock dynamic worked great. I felt this was Mathew's best scene because I didn't like him as a religious guy. And it was inexplicable to me that he was a "technology writer" here, something that got mostly ignored the rest of the movie. He wore too many hats. One minute he's a frat boy looking for an interview with Drumlin, the next minute he has morphed into a man of the cloth.

I never noticed this until reading your comment, and I agree. Maybe it's a result of him being a fusion of multiple characters from the book.

That’s not it. This is after he dropped out of seminary, where he’s traveling the world doing research for a broader idea about technology and science that he hasn’t quite pinned down yet.

@@barbarawoodbury5929 Yeah, on the other tables you see onions. I guess it gets a little windy - open air establishment. Interesting - adds a touch of reality - not just a Hollywood set.

Also, Palmer's question about God that "sabotaged" her interview for the mission also saved her, prevented her from being blown by the bomber.

She unbuckles the contraption that was NOT in the schematics to retrieve the compass.
Music from The Flying Nun in the background as Palmer approaches her.

Fact .
matts best role, imo
It's fascinating to note that she has a French accent, not an Anglo accent, when she speaks Spanish. Since she's bilingual in French and it's so similar to Spanish, it makes sense.
