Wow, I have the same model. Noticed it not chipping properly. The wood kept drifting to the left and getting stuck. Saw this video today and sure enough my chipper is developing a crack at the exact same spot. Thanks for the short, well explained video. Much appreciated.

Yes thats what my DR chipper did also , came apart at the weld joints, had to reinforce it with a quarter inch metal,

    Definitely a design flaw.

Thank you! I had the exact same problem. My fix, following your design, is holding up very well in spite of my novice welds. Just in case, I ordered a new plate and DR has changed to two extra short center ribs. I don't know what they are thinking. That is unlikely to strengthen the outer ends where the failure occurs and the new ribs do not extend down to the base. As can be seen in your pics and on my own machine there is little bending and no metal failure at either side of the center wear plate bolt where DR has added extra ribs. I'll probably reinforce the new plate properly before (if) I ever need to use it. Incidentally, I have a PTO model and recently the 3-point hitch top link unscrewed itself (my bad) during operation and the chipper flipped backwards. A momentary deflection caused the blade to shear off about 1/8 inch of the wear plate. To my surprise, there is not a mark on the blade. That's some hard metal! The only other damage was a broken PTO shaft yoke. All is good again.

We can't be the only ones with that problem. You would think they would reinforce it. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Mine is the 21hp model and it would eat anything until those side plate welds started to fail - plus it has broken two knife blades because of acute entry angle of the wood hitting the blade. I’m installing a new side plate with the additional “reinforced” gussets, but they should have used your approach - simple and strong. I may take this new one to a welding shop and have them weld angle iron like yours for a permanent fix. I’m having a heck of a time getting the shaft bearing off the side plate so I can install it on the new one. I’ve removed the two housing bolts, the “C” clip and the set screws but the thing won’t budge! I’ve tried PB blaster, light taps with a hammer and prying the housing and no joy. Thinking Fire might help? Thoughts, ideas???

Thanks Tim! You would think they would reinforce it at the factory.

Good fix and you're more of an engineer than the original designer of that chipper. Thanks for sharing.

I think that engine is rated 16.50 ft lb of torque, 420cc and 13 hp.

Could you update if your welding has held up? I received a new plate and their design changed to 2 middle welds. My recommendation is nothing bigger then 3 inch and keep knife hours regulated...a dull knife adds to harsh vibrations.

I've been looking for a machine like that. Haven't found any real deals yet though. Nice repair. Good and sturdy now.

It is a little surprising that they didn't do something a little like that from new. But what you did looks to be well strong enough. Hope you are having a good weekend.

Yeah, hard to believe they don't have a lot of them returned. I bet most people just grind small limbs so it works for most. I however am running it at capacity every time. I like the chipper and now I think it might hold up. Thanks Glenn.

Let's see some chipping when the weather breaks. I have a Garden Way (Troy) Super Tomahawk with an 8 hp Briggs engine that I plan to rebuild/refurbish this spring, but it is only rated 1-3 inches, "depending upon hardness of wood". YMMV.

I was looking at DR C10-CHP but not sure if the 10hp motor on it would be any good...its a discontinued model so parts may not be easy to get either. Priced @ $400

For wood chipping I wouldn't want anything any smaller.

How did you get it apart? I have similar issue on a 375. Can’t seem to get the coupling off of shaft to separate halves.

  • @SoatMon

There are some set screws on the coupling that you have to loosen.

I did remove set screws and still could not get bearings removed from shaft. Destroyed one pillowblock but got them off. Ordered 2 new bearings from Jacks small engine online. Welded up crack on both sides and now I have to wait for bearings.
