Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher: Vaping, Alcohol Use & Other Risky Youth Behaviors

Ғылым және технология

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, FSAHM. She is a professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine and a developmental psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Halpern-Felsher is a world expert in adolescent decision-making and risk-taking behaviors.
She explains the huge increase in vaping (e-cigarettes) by young people. She explains why vaping nicotine and cannabis is particularly dangerous to the developing brain. We discuss the rise in vaping addiction, the unique social pressures and social media influences faced by youth that make quitting challenging, and interventions to aid them in quitting or reducing use.
We also discuss the role of technology and social media. And, the use of alcohol, nicotine pouches, fentanyl, and other risky behaviors that adolescents face now.
This episode should interest parents, teachers, coaches, teens, and families. It covers the current youth substance use landscape and also covers resources and ways to quit these addictive behaviors.

Huberman, as a 17 year old I have been surrounded by drugs and alcohol and have chosen not to partake. Initially it was fear of the unknown that kept me away but my friends quickly normalized it. Then I found the Huberman lab podcast. I listened to the marijuana and alcohol episodes and took notes. It is true that education is an extremely powerful tool in combatting these behaviors. Thank you for allowing me to educate myself.

tough choice between being ethical and not making that amount of money or taking advantage of the weak and making mills. one could argue that it's unethical because of the fact that he is aware that it kills people but another argument can be made that it's people's choice at the end of the day and he's not actually obligating his clients to keep buying it. it's his clients who keep promoting said products. very delicate argument

In our household, having difficult and uncomfortable conversations was and is still the norm. My mother was always “up-in-our business” in subtle but non-obtrusive ways. She could effectively read my mood and body language in a matter of seconds when entering a room. Oftentimes, she would lovingly plan a way to get me to open up and talk to her, e.g., a warm chocolate cake with chocolate icing straight from the oven. 🥰My mother would tell me that since we (her children) were a combo of herself and our father, it was her responsibility to understand and guide us through as many generational issues as she could. IMO, it wasn’t just the conversations that kept me out of a lot of trouble, it was watching my parents in action. They are far from perfect but they practiced what they preached. Also, growing up we had one television in the home. We could afford for everyone to have a TV in their room but there was no need since every weekend was filled with activities such as museum visits and trips to the farmers market. I believe those decisions helped balance my relationship with social media and TV. However, I am still working on balancing my love of all things automobile. 😜 Great episode! Keep moving forward, Andrew!

¡Hola Profe! Such an important episode for any parent of teens. I find that it's not enough to talk about these topics at home. Kids spend more than half of their day at school. But when we discuss a lot of those topics on our "teacher-parents" reunions, every discussion that we are having isn't based around educating our kids about the dangers and consequences of these behaviors, but around "not doing it on the school premises".Thank You for all Your hard work and care for all of us.

For me, it was nicotine and Skunk (strong weed) at 14, as well as booze, MDMA at 17, and cocaine at 18. It was great fun at the time, but it for sure negatively affected my mental health. It's not big, not clever, and will not benefit your life in any way shape, or form. Sobriety is far more fun and far more healthy. And for the most part, my mental health has improved drastically since becoming sober and living the correct way (working out, cold showers, healthy eating, sleep, etc).

So I am 22 years old right now, and when I was a child, I had trouble focusing, I went to my doctor and got medication prescribed to me for this medical issue. Nothing makes me want to smoke or vape more then a bunch of adults who take absolutely no responsibility for what they have done in their life times, telling me what to consume and what not to consume( which is what I see in anti tobacco campaigns). Like what I see is a lot of anti tobacco campaigns and anti vaping campaigns, with people who say they have cancer or ETC problem, telling me that vaping and or smoking is bad and I need to be ashamed of it, this is not the way to address this situation, shaming, and or saying what you are doing or want to do is bad, is a great way to make people who want to consume X substance consume it. We need to understand why teenagers and young adults are choosing to use pharmaceuticals to get by in life, and we need to provide medical treatment when necessary. What I have read is these same teenagers who we demonize for vaping because it gets them high, are taking acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as Donepezil and Gelantamine, which are absolutely horrendous to take, especially in excess because of their side effects. However for these people because it makes them do better on exams, they will use whatever it takes to do well, even if i makes them feel awful. demonizing these people for consumption's of nicotine will only increase its use, these people are not trying to get high, they are trying to get by in a world hostile to the way the human mind evolved to get by in. A large reason why people consume drugs, is because the way life is now is very hostile to the way the human mind evolved to function. What we need to do is understand the needs of these teenagers and young adults, we need to understand the purpose nicotine servers in their life, and replaces it with a better more effective medication, not demonize it. I agree that vaping nicotine is bad and is not the way to go, like with alcohol, it is not that it doesn't work as an anti anxiety drug, it is that their are better pharmaceutical medications that can be used to help said people. We should focus on ways to deal with this said issue, and defeat it, instead of saying nicotine is evil and we need to eradicate it, we should be discussing more effective and safer ways to achieve its desired result, while understanding why people chooses to continue to use the substances.

I’m 25 and I quit vaping 3 months ago, I started when I was 18 in 2017 when the vapes blew up in popularity. It took about 7 years of use and then quit. First couple days really sucked due to withdrawal, and then the next 2 weeks was strong thoughts of going and purchasing one. But after a month I don’t even think about them anymore.

Its actually not that difficult to quit. Withdrawal lasts about 3 days, but certain medicines help incredibly. Excedrin, which is a mix of Tylenol, aspirin, and caffeine works like a charm. I have been a student pastor for 25+ years. Thank you for putting all my assorted observations into one succinct place. I have made most all of these observations over the decades at different points individually. I believe a lot of our current college and HS students (Gen Z) will raise their children like their parents (Gen X) were raised. Opting for their children to be far more independent and less attached to digital entertainment and assumed entitlement. Boundaries lines have slowly blurred since 2010-2013 and our current young adults will have to work to figure out what caused that fade out. I am interested to see what they place the blame on in the next 10-15 years.

I teach high school health and PE. I take surveys of my students, more than 75% of teens at my school voted for vaping nicotine as being the biggest health related problem at our school. Followed by stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, and depression. They are incredibly addicted, and we should be offering more supports to quitting this nasty addiction, rather than simply punishing students. Many teens, who do want to quit, do not know where to get help or support in quitting, they are afraid to ask their parents, teachers, and adults in their lives. Most of my students report being introduced to vaping in middle school, not so much through peer pressure, but they try it because their friends are doing so, and they end up addicted in the process. I teach about the risks and dangers of vaping, and introduce them to quit lines/ websites for teens specifically, but more needs to be done on a larger scale to help the youth today with the vaping crisis. And yes we are seeing much lower physical activity levels, many students struggle with cardiovascular endurance, and even holding a 20-30 second plank. Im sure this is due to more factors beyond vaping, but vaping is playing a role.

I'm barely holding on as is, I cannot afford the days/weeks it would put me out of commission. Education and work have deadlines and performance expectations. If you're already on the edge of flunking out/failing and getting fired, then the cost of the withdrawals is simply not one that can be tolerated. And this isn't even mentioning the underlying factors that rear their ugly heads once the cope keeping them at bay disappears. >Suicidal ideation >Depression >Personality disorders >etc So >Teens get addicted in school >Get thrown into the worst economic conditions in living memory >struggle to survive; reinforces cope >Quitting the cope may very well mean not surviving, taking that out of the equation

I am 21 years old. I have had bouts of major depressive disorder since i was 9. I had rough home environments growing up and when i was 17 found a dab pen in behind a picture in my dads room. My environment was extremely cramped, my dad and his girlfriend were indifferent to this discomfort of his children. I began smoking as a coping mechanism. And now at 21, 22 in just a couple months. I have a very hard time stopping. I want to stop. I just am very weak i guess in comparison to others because when i am sober i am vulnerable to depressive episodes. I dont want to feel like everything is meaningless. So i smoke. I live normally in every other way. And i take care of myself pretty well. But i struggle to quit smoking weed. My parents are substance users. And i sometimes feel as if there is no escaping addiction. Freeing myself from weed at times feels pointless. At some point in my life ill probably relapse, and ill have to walk up this hill again. I wonder if it is better to just live and die with it. If i were to stop today. Id feel the urge to stop tomorrow. And then the shame of giving in to this tiresome habit.

I'm not trying to offend you, I have been through a lot up until I was 23, smoking weed all the way. Life still was wild when I was 23, I was just more stable at that point. Eventually I was able to quit through creating my own home environment. I am sure you will be able to aswell, if you want. If I feel weak while quitting, I just say "when I am 70 I can smoke as much as I want " If you are unable to quit, many people have their own poisons. Just don't let it kill you, show restraint when possible.
