DPReview TV: Laowa 24mm F14 Probe Lens Field Test
Ғылым және технология
This week we take a look at one of the more unique optics we've seen for quite a while. The Laowa 14mm F14 Macro Probe lens may look like something out of a science fiction movie, but as Chris and Jordan discover, it opens the door to some really interesting photo opportunities.

Is that a Laowa 14mm F14 Macro Probe lens in your pocket or are you just happy to see me Chris.

My guess is its probeably a lens.
Laowa's products never cease to amaze and not in the bad way that so many niche releases do. It's the world turned upside down when Sigma and a boutique Chinese company are where the most interesting lens development is at.

AhpgZfoc4s I'm so happy with my Laowa 9mm f/2.8. On APS-C that's as wide-angle as I could wish without any signs of fisheye. Hopefully Laowa will continue high-quality niche products.
Lube that baby up and do the review everyone wants to see.
It would be an interesting challenge to use this for street photography!

Andrew Power It looks like you could actually build it into an actual gun frame too. Shutter release as the "trigger" and done. Just don't get shot by the cops though!
Did you notice the fish in the lower left at 6:30?

...toilet shot... cut to inserting into Jordan's mouth... Great review, I can't imagine it's something I'd ever consider. I feel for macro I'd still personally prefer the slight telephoto and large aperture look that you mentioned at the end. I do like the fact that it's waterproof at the end though, I think that's a bigger differentiation from regular macro lenses. I know someone who takes pictures inside their fish tank (of coral, fishes etc). It's one thing using something like a 80MM macro through glass, but another actually inserting the probe into the tank for wide angle macros. I could see that being very cool.
Aliens give it a 10/10
Awesome review! Can't wait for the next video, guys! Really engaging content
Interesting review. One question - can you adjust the power setting of the LEDs?
Can you make a video of the elements on min 9:12 and how you create test shots with it?
'insert the lens'. 😂 😂 😂
I never even thought of anything dirty until Chris brought it up. Thanks Chris.
Hi Phillip, What light you use for the Pepsi cans? only the YONGNUO YN360 III?; and the edelkrone Slider ONE v2 can handle the weight of the sony a7sii and Loawa 24mm ? thanks so much! regards from Venezuela :)
Great video and review! I was debating whether to back this on Kickstarter and I think you just pushed me over the top!
Is it possible to shoot super slo-mo (120fps) with that lens or is the aperture too small to let enough light in?
Thank you for this review. It answered a few of my questions.
I am planning to buy a lumix g85 or g9, will this lense be comapitible with those cameras?
Will this work with the Panasonic G9’s High Resolution mode?
awesome vid! Is this compatible with the Sony a6000? I know very little about cameras
With a motorized slider this would be amazing for video production with some trippy movements.
Got an old m42 or m39 repro lens with 3 or more extension tubes: pretty much the same thing. A lot of fun, very unique perspectives, endless opportunities to let your playfulness run amok.
what happen if you put an macro tube extension?? thanks!
guys, can you do a video on super35 and 35mm film/digital video formats? and also how anamorphic comes into the picture.
Man, I thought you and Jordan were close, but you named you kid after Kai 😊

Hmm, possibly. Let me take another Lok at the video.
The shot at 4:45 has some dirt in the footage. Is this sensor dirt or was the lens contaminated?
Great video, always enjoy the humor.
You’re right on target about the new creative uses for this type of lens - that’s the fun challenge. About availability “soon”, I understand it won’t be generally available until about the first quarter of next year. Until then, when “ordered” on kickstarter, “some” backers “may” start getting the lens in October - kinda iffy for a price tag of more than $1200. I’ll wait, even if it means paying more - bugs may be worked out by then, too.
Wow That's super neat! Sweet Review
Is it the light have a battery slot also?
Hii... Can you tell me locatin 0:30 where you stand
Nice editing to put Jordans' dental check after it went in the bowl!
What about landscapes shots like non-macro lenses do? Is it real get good quality or interesting picture with this lense?
This video makes me want to get one now!
Wow that lens is sure happy to see you
When i need an enlightening photographic equipment reviews i go to Chris and Jordan's or Tony's or Chris Winter etc... But when I'm on silly mode, i go to Kai's... Great video as usual guys!
will this work with a fuji xt-3 ???
This is why they pay you the big bucks. So hilarious, and yet productive and intelligent! Thanks for this, guys!
Does this lens have an Fuji X mount option?
Great review! I'm still wondering why you held the power bank with the rubber band ON THE LENS instead of on the camera or your pocket. 🧐 The cable looked long enough.
Nice Video. you help other people gain a knowledge
Did you mention price and I missed it?

Yea a normal macro lense looks better.
I use asparagus rubber bands as grips on my Sigma ART DN lenses for m4/3!
There’s a ring of leds around the front lens specifically for low light, that USB port is to plug in the power and controller for it
from the toilet bowl straight to Jordon's mouth, love that edit
something like this for micro 4/3rds would be interesting, so you could get even deeper DOF for miniatures.
Can we use this lense on Nikon 3300
Hi guys! Awesome video as always! But I'm German so I need something to complain about: That close-up shot of Chris starting at 10:41 seems to wooble when Chris moves/tilts his head up or down. Is there some kind of post processing stabilization going on that makes his face stay in the same relative position in the frame? If so, it's kinda strange-looking. I think I'd rather have a still framing and natural head movements instead of a wobbling framing and a steady head position. I hope I'm not on the totally wrong track here. But is does look slightly artificial. But that's only a minute point. You're doing a great job!
Does anyone know what is causing that strange IS effect on the filming camera around 11:00? The camera seems to want to follow the movements of his head in a very mechanical way.
The innuendo is strong with this one.
For sometime i thought 'DPReview' was about something else. Now i know its about photogear...
Tell me you traveled to Seattle to get a look at that new Nikon. Better yet, you took it back to Canada for extended hands-on.
"My conclusion on this weird lens is that it is weird" - Well said Chris!
Have you tried endoscopy with that thing?
This is going to be good.
The Olympus Tough action cameras have a built in microscope mode which can do crazy good macro but you have to get up really close
I would love to have one of those. In this day and age though, you would want to be careful where you pointed it for fear someone would call you in for pointing a gun at them. :/
Never want to buy this thing but watched this video several times because its too entertaining!
Just don't use in public in the USA (unless you want to be shot by the police).

Siime eye or this lens?
Another cracking review, as opposed to a view of your crack. Thanks a lot.
It is fun but the price is bit high, I wish there are more affordable options. Otherwise, it is really appealing. I love the stone shots and thinking we can make a lot unusual things very small to look really really big.
Price for the lens ???
I think that thing needs an orange tip for safety. Well done review bud!
6:52 Very useful for life & family. Maybe I will buy one 🤣
And there was me thinking I'm the only one using an asparagus rubber band lol
...first impression: the length of that probe lens is... formidable.
First real unbiassd review ive seen
Anyone knows a price?
It looks "fun"
like your videos
It's definietely unique
Surprised you didn't do an eye shot with the lens ;)
You had a fairly long cable to that power bank, and rubber bands... Why not just strap it to the tripod?
is this the perfect lens for shooting miniatures?
I can use this for Telecine 16mm film transfer to digital. But kinda expensive.
This lens might not be perfect, but it is something I would love to own.
I've spent hours taking macro shots of wasps is a standard macro lens, only got stung once. That being said, I would back up when they started getting antsy
at 7:53 your using a Camera Store lens cloth............because I have one....lol
Showing the clip of putting it in Jordan’s mouth immediately after the toilet. Classy!
The wide angle shots with the blurred background look quite similar to a 25mm/f2. I don't think this lens is worth the price, except you love underwater macros or forensics
Holy cow - has Vivid Video got a hold of one of these, yet??
Whoo that is the Craziest lens Ever!!!
I'm confused. Since when is he with dpreview, i only knew him from this other camerastore channel i occasionally watched videos from.

If you think that $1500 USD is too much to spend, then come to Sweden it costs about $2100 USD here. The cams and the camgear are almost more expensive in Sweden than in the UK/US
