DP/30: Mississippi Grind, Ben Mendelsohn

Фильм және анимация

Ben Mendelsohn had a long career in Australia before he became famous (though still a bit of a "that guy" for a lot of people) in the U.S. with Animal Kingdom and many roles since. He's one of those actors who is endlessly fascinating to watch. He sat down with David Poland and discussed his life as an actor.
Shot in Los Angeles, October 2015

I grew up watching Ben on TV and in film in Australia. I'm not surprised he's doing well in the States now. It's been a long time coming. Animal Kingdom showed people in the States what he can do as we Aussies already knew he was amazing.

So true. Fell in love with Ben in his early films such as Spotswood and The Big Steal, both are among some of my favourites and I still go back and watch them every now and then. My son was the spitting image of Ben when he was growing up so much so that people would mention the similarity all the time. Just to see Ben’s name on something is enough for me to go watch it.

Killing Them Softly. Ben has a medium role but OWNS every scene he is in and after it finishes, his is the role that endures.

I love Mendelsohn in Knowing. His American accent is insanely good. I didn't know he wasn't American until after I saw the movie.

Ben is pretty intense! Always respected the great Ozzie actors and Ben is high up there. Starred Up and Animal Kingdom especially - yet to see Misissipi Grind but looking forward to it!

Great interview as always! Mendelsohn is an absolute treasure. He not only seems like such a cool, warm fellow. But no matter whether his role is big or small, he always delivers and his love for his craft always shines through on screen. It's amazing that even though he's been acting for nearly 30 years, he hasn't lost his enthusiasm for it.

In regards to that bit about Liam Neeson, I'd argue that The Grey is a way better film than Michael Collins and easily Neeson's finest work since Schindler's List. It was a personal film for him, and if you've seen it you'll know why. I hate this sniffy attitude that people had towards it because they assumed the film was "Neeson fights wolves". It was much deeper than that. And time is being kinder to the legacy of The Grey. It's a fucking great movie! Also, back on topic, Ben Mendelsohn is one of the most interesting actors in the business right now and Mississippi Grind is a perfect example of his talent. Another underrated film.
