Ryan Reynolds & Ben Mendelsohn Talk 'Mississippi Grind', the 'Deadpool Movie', and More

Ойын-сауық

I think Ryan Reynolds is an underrated actor. If you look at his work in films like The Nines, Buried, Smokin' Aces, and The Voices (just to name a few), you see someone that is willing to take risks and do what it takes for the role. While he hasn't yet launched a huge Hollywood franchise (hopefully Deadpool will stick), he always delivers a solid performance.
The same goes for Ben Mendelsohn. While most of you will know his work from Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines, he's given fantastic performances as a character actor in numerous roles over the years, and he's now on the new Netflix drama series Bloodline, which means I'm going to have to check it out.
mississippi-grind-ryan-reynoldsWhich brings me to writers-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s gambling pic, Mississippi Grind, which stars Reynolds and Mendelsohn. In the film, the two play men willing to bet on anything. Gerry (Mendelsohn) is the typical gambling addict that he's lonely and in debt, while Curtis (Reynolds) claims that winning doesn’t matter to him. When the two meet up over a game, they decide to enter a high-stakes poker game and go on a road trip. The film also stars Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton, Alfre Woodard, and Robin Weigert.
At this year's Sundance Film Festival I sat down with the two actors to talk about making the film, their characters, their chemistry in the film and how they became good friends off-screen (Reynolds says his wife calls Mendelsohn his “other wife”), playing poker, the research process for the roles, and more. They also talked about other projects like Deadpool, The Voices, The Woman in Gold, The Place Beyond the Pines, Black Sea, and Bloodline.
Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn Time Index:
:10 - Talk about doing the interview so early in the morning.
:55 - Who do they play and what is the film about?
1:55 - Is the finished film pretty close to the script they first received? Talk about shooting scenes on the freeway while en route to locations.
3:01 - Talk about the research process for the roles and learning poker.
4:43 - Their chemistry in the film and how they became good friends off-screen. Reynolds says his wife calls Mendelsohn his “other wife”.
6:32 - How has their preparation process changed over the years? Talk about how sometimes preparing too much can be bad.
8:15 - Talk about playing poker and whether Mendelsohn may or may not have gotten carried away.
10:07 - Deadpool talk. Reynolds says he’s wearing the costume right now and talks about the benefits of having a smaller budget.
11:20 - Reynolds talks about the “weird, weird, weird dark comedy ”The Voices and how much he loves it.
12:26 - Mendelsohn reminisces about The Place Beyond the Pines and how it lead to him landing his role in Mississippi Grind.
13:20 - Mendelsohn talks about Black Sea and his upcoming Netflix show Bloodline.
14:10 - Reynolds discusses The Woman in Gold and filming in Vienna.

I had the pleasure of working with Ryan & Ben on Mississippi Grind and you could tell they had become good friends on set. They played Name That Tune over the course of a 12 hour day & I was lucky enough to play along with them, both really knowledgeable in music! Had a long talk with Ben as we headed back to holding & he talked my ear off! LOL Great guys!

Really great interview. Ben and Ryan are really a couple of the best and probably most under rated actors.

That was just an all around great interview. Great flow. Each actor got equal time and they had the type of chemistry I'd expect-low key and great respect for one another. And you said it when you proclaimed them to both be exceptional actors. Ben was CHILLING in Bloodline... Just a spectacular performance. And when Ryan gets a good script he always NAILS IT! The Voices was sheer GENIUS! Have not yet seen Mississippi Grind. Can't wait to though!

wow... looking back 6 yrs from your comment; yes that would've been great. But Disney did a 1 up on it, they chose to cast this incredible actor with 10 000 facial expressions to a role where his entire face is covered in shitty CGI 95% of the time........

Stupid lemmings are too dumb to pay good money to see a movie with no effects and no sound in a movie theatre where you basically pay for added value the big canvas and quality sound system give to the visuals and sound. Those dumbasses.

Ben is so casual and funny he doesn't have to try and I'm aussy and I love to see Aussies on the big screen and make success because we are a small country in population large land mass but we do have something in our culture because when ever iv been overseas it's like funny like g'day mate the old crocodile what's he's name omg I remember but people remember that movie like we are like that Haha but we are happy because we live on beaches and we are largely a peaceful country. And the arts are very important in Australia. I love Australian films. I wish there was more investment in Aussie films instead of then all going to Hollywood it's like we loose our biggest assets that can help with the next generations. But Ben is in real life a lovely dude. It's not fake it's true ask most people and they will say he is a really good human. I wish him the best. I loved the place in the pines that film was so good. Ryan Gosling was unreal do good he is as a actor. And the director is a really one of my favourite
