Dozens heard Amelia Earhart's distress signals, researchers say

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart 81 years ago remains one of the great unsolved mysteries in American history. This week, researchers revealed a new clue that may shed light on what happened to Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, as they tried to circle the globe. Dana Jacobson reports.

After the transmissions received by 3differentPan Am direction finding stations traced the signals to the Gardner Island area, is what sent theNavy there. They reported "Recent signs of habitation", but their fly over resulted in no one coming out waving, nor did they see the aircraft, so they wrote it off. That wasn't until 2 days after the last radio message went out. The plane had been washed out to sea and both were either too weak/dehydrated or dead, to be able to respond to the aircraft. WHY didn't thenavy land a shore party to search? They just blew her off.

Morse code possibly could have saved Earhart and Noonan but neither knew the code. Morse code signals traveled further than voice modulation with the radio equipment of that period. It's surprising that Noonan, an experienced navigator, wasn't versed in Morse Code.

signals and code .....the actual licensure of being an operator was based upon words per minute and accuracy....in that day when you left radio range (voice) you switched to Q signal encoded morse communication....these signals were not true Morse Wireless operator standard Morse established by Marconi corporation...this was pro signs used to signal and receive basic information. You did not need to become a wireless operator and be proficient with Morse beyond cursory level. That was a science in and of itself and the rudimentary levels were ok for operations. Furthermore as long as you had a transmitter, that heavy key unit could be replaced by using the wires themselves in an improvised fashion to signal and receive.....this was later taught to radio operator gunners of the USAAF and used in combat. Bottom line you can leave behind the heavy Key unit and carry almost a full gallon of gas in exchange whilst still being able to use CW transmission. I am not surprised they ended up on an island and were able to transmit...in your last 20 minutes of gas remaining as the tanks are run dry and you key the plane to slosh anything left to the pickups...to run them dry again...you realize the low sun angles and haze and scattered cloud make running down a sunline difficult despite the bubble octant and astrocompasss precision....so look out the window Seeing the wave vs ripples vs Swell patterns on the sea surface will guide you to nearby islands....this was known to the Navigators such as Noonan who taught Navigation and knew the ancient ways used to Navigate the Pacific. The morning sun would have assisted in the recognition of such swell patterns and chop lines associated with reef breaks. Both would have also known how to transmit distress calls with position using CW and improvisational Keying....anybody who has had a head injury knows that capability is lost if you are hurting....and that keying itself must be anticipated by the listener or it may just sound like static broken up by electrical storms intruding into any radio waves. The Dynamo and electrics used and heavy Liaison radio and antenna set are ungainly to remove from an aircraft and put all together along with the aircraft battery and perhaps generator....all that with what tools and what time....it makes sense to keep it all together in a plane sitting upright. By the time the wet sands and silt become awash with tidal flooding it is too late to play mechanic and one is left to hope the waves do not claim the ship....if the aircraft is left the salt water brine quickly corrodes any hope of further transmissions. Mostly empty fuel tanks buoyantly lift the airplane and reposition the ship with the tides. It makes sense and their decision making reasonable.

There is a map, produced by the Navy with the radio-direction bearings that point to Gardner Island. The receiving stations were Pan Am, military and ships in that region. This is very compelling evidence, moreover, transmitters were expensive and hard to come by. The plane had substantial batteries to start radial engines and would run the radio for a period of time. You really should look into the evidence and listen to Bety Klenck's interview, she seems honest and non-deceptive.

Our government knows exactly what happened to her. She landed the plane on a strip of beach on Endriken Island, Mili atoll, Marshall Islands. There was alot of damage to the landing gear and the brakes were shredded but the plane was mostly intact. The Japanese ordered approximately 40 Marshallese natives to load her Lockheed Electra onto the barge Koshu Maru. She and Fred Noonan were captured and imprisoned on Saipan as spies. The Electra was stored in a hangar at Aslito airfield in Saipan. Several US marines saw the plane flown and destroyed in 1944. One marine recovered Amelia's briefcase containing her papers, flight plans and passport. He turned them over to a Lt. Colonel Wallace. They conveniently vanished. Amelia and Fred died on Saipan. Fred was rumored to have been beheaded. Amelia was either executed as well or died of dysentery. They were buried just outside of a local Saipan cemetery.

It is more probable that she ran short of fuel due to a navigational error on Noonan's part and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Celestial navigation is very crude: a small error translates to being "miles off" of a target. This is most likely what happened. They are significantly off Howland and did not have enough fuel to recover.

She'd be older than the Titanic. But when the plane disappeared, there's no way to say if she died right then and there or survived for a while.
