The news that Walmart is closing its Fort street mall location seems to be part of a trend for businesses in downtown Honolulu.

You hit it on the head! Walmart is all about the bottom line. They will close a store in a minute if it is not profitable. It is sad all these major Democrat cities and states are slowly eroding away. I remember Honolulu as a beautiful, clean, peaceful city a place of fun and joy and a blessing to our Nation. However, this was when Democrats and Republicans equally supported law and order.

It's not criminal activity in the normal sense though, it is people just going in and taking things to eat, and stuff to make them more comfortable in their makeshift tents. They don't care if they get arrested; they probably won't be arrested either. You are right of course, but the real culprit is compassion. Compassion is a human weakness without a collective plan. The problem is democracy. Inferiors are given the same vote as their betters and since the beginning of time inferior people have outnumbered superior people. When this leads to clear systemic failures you act like the result is just. It is not. In a just system the superior would rule over the inferior regardless of whether the inferior consented to this rule.

Downtown Honolulu is not indicative of the rest of Honolulu. Downtown Honolulu was always very seedy. There is a thriving Walmart a 10 minute drive from the downtown one. Walmart is closing every store in Portland, Oregon tomorrow. Anyone familiar with Portland won't have to wonder why. Out of control Shoplifting and crime at their stores. Then this week Cracker Barrel Restaurants announced they were closing, all their restaurants immediately in Portland Metro. Yes you get what you vote for, and businesses are fed up with the crime and everything else. I don't blame them for closing at least in some areas of the USA. The increasing number of homeless people downtown is just part of the problem. Downtown Honolulu does not have sufficient downtown residents to keep the them profitable and they rely a lot on the office workers who commute to downtown to keep them in the black. Nowadays, a substantial number of downtown office workers no longer work in their offices five days a week. They may just go into the office a couple of days a week and then work remotely from home. It's very evident during lunch time. A lot of the small eating places are struggling. It doesn't help that HPU has moved its campus a few years back, which further reduced the foot traffic for the downtown businesses. I have been working in downtown Honolulu since 1993 and am really sad to see all the businesses struggling.

With Wally-world leaving the area, there still on the hook to pay the taxes on their property weither occupied or not. If Hawaii has income, sales taxes they may see a dip in the revenue generated by that location but they figure those layed off employees will probably find other jobs or transfer to another store and the customer base will also shift to purchase their needs from another store or online. The decline is due to the unConstitutional government betrayal for decades, as "we" have been driven to this destruction intentionally by the criminals in government, most that were never lawfully voted for in the first place~! I’d also like to see the stats on how many people have left Honolulu and Hawaii in general because of the expense. Cost of living there was high before the current administration, it must be astronomical now. If they’re leaving, that would be another valid explanation for closing businesses………not just a homeless presence.

I bet the Korean supermarket does not have a pharmacy. If Walmart is leaving, then you know you have BIG problems. I am appreciative of the stores open in my area and would not want to ever see them leave. In my area though we don't allow theft, people pay for their goods and services, and we do not allow homeless wandering around outside stores. I am empathetic to the good people in Honolulu losing their stores. It will be a huge inconvenience and prices will necessarily skyrocket.

I couldn't believe thy had torn down the International Market Place and built a lot of high end shops. the place was deserted where before it was bustling with activity. after thirty years w will never return, our paradise is gone.

State of Hawaii is a progressive left leaning state. When you keep voting in progressive left leaning politicians; democrats, you're going to have lenient policies such as defunding police, drug abuse, homelessness & crime. Businesses are not going to stay open in areas when there's chaos. When people don't want to face chaos, then sales go down. Sales go down, it's not worth staying open. Hawaiians, vote better!!
