Down The Line with Jack Robinson | SESSIONS

Спорт

After a rollercoaster WSL Championship Tour season wrapped up in California, Jack Robinson and João Chianca shelved all thoughts of rest and relaxation when they saw a booming swell heading for the South Pacific island nation of Fiji. With the famed Cloudbreak a huge and very welcome re-addition to the 2024 CT schedule, Jack and João had no hesitation in launching a last-minute strike to one of the planet’s most revered waves with two goals in mind: R&D for next year, and to celebrate their sterling seasons by getting barrelled out of their brains.
To call the trip a success would be an understatement. Jack and João - and assortment of friends including Yago Dora, Ian Gentil, and Kai Lenny - indulged in a tubefest of the highest order, and headed home buzzing over their first trips to Fiji, and excited to tackle Cloudbreak in competition next year.
When Dan Scott’s incredible footage landed in our hands we had no hesitation in pulling together the edit you see above, and got Jack on the phone to find out if Cloudbreak lived up to its billing as the world’s most perfect wave, how much time he spent parked in the pit, and just how hungry he is to get back to the South Pacific in 2024.
Press play now to soak up all of Dan’s work and Jack's wisdom, fresh from the South Pacific. Enjoy!

Can’t believe he hasn’t been there before. The way he surfs tombstones makes me think he would do really well out there when it’s big

WSL: add a weighted value scale based on location. There's no reason perfect 2 foot dingy scores should be equivalent to massive Chopes, Pipe, or J Bay. If nothing else, even a weighted + for 'maximum historic sizes for x wave' so that solid performances at the premium spots mean more. If that wave is putting out in the 85%-110% historic maximum contest size, maybe add +5 points to the season totals. Not against other comps, or their scores; specifically just at that particular spots events, and it's weighted value over the season. If trestles is worth 50 total points, pumping chopes could be like 62.5 or something like that, after scores and top performers are scored up. Cloud, Tahiti, North Shore, Margaret River, J Bay should all mean a lot more than a handful of other spots. No perfect scores are the same. If one perfect score at a weak spot is 100%: a perfect score at Chopes should be 135-150% more points. They could even market it with some branded sticker like 'Volcom Gold Medal Spot' and maybe there's 5-6 over the season. Filipe now has to perform when it matters more, and not only hoarde up scores at 3.5ft waves.

Finally some common sense with the WSL holding a comp in good waves, they now need to base world champion on accumulated points and get rid of the finals in shit waves.
