People still don't get it. Douglas channeled everything that was going wrong in to his life in to a short term focus to give the kind of effort people had always said he was capable of in shocking Tyson. But in the months that followed, the permanence of losing his mother, who he said was his best friend and his son's mother's ongoing sickness created a depression that damn near killed him after this fight. If he had just no showed and been middling after the Holyfield fight, I could get dogging him. But the man's depression caused him to blow up in weight and he almost died from a diabetic coma. He was clearly in a terrible place mentally. I've been there. It's a lot easier to channel the energy in the immediacy after a major loss before the grief really sets in. But once it does, it doesn't go away. And though she wasn't the picture of health, his mom wasn't an old woman. It was very much a sudden and shocking death for Douglas. That's what makes the contrast in his performances from Tyson to Holyfield so ironic and profound: They were both the product of the exact same situation.

No he beat tyson so he thought he was better than he was tyson was the 4th best hw of there era. Lennox Holyfield bowe then tyson Buster would only beat 1. Tyson couldn’t beat anyone and wouldn’t fight riddick as he knew him but dozens of times said friends make fights to support there family. Holyfield fought those toon3 guys of the era 7 times Lenox 2 mike 2 bowe 3.

I respect James "Buster" Douglas" for his victory over "Iron" Mike Tyson, but Douglas vs. Holyfield was a JOKE. Buster weighed in at 246lbs, and was starving himself before the weigh-in in a last ditch effort to look fit. What a JOKE! He went to EAT immediately after the weigh-in. He was likely at least 250lbs when the bell rang. He was rolled in and carried out.

Douglas and his camp where angry with Tyson and Don King because they tried to have Douglas victory over Tyson overturned by the governing bodies plus Holyfield was the mandatory challenger and had been waiting a while to get his title shot.

Douglas really blew it...he did get $20M plus for the fight v Holyfield but if he had won, the rematch with Tyson he could have gotten what $30M??? You think that would have motivated him.

No amount of money can get you over the pain of losing someone as important to you as Douglas's mother was to him. Once the reality of her loss set in, he clearly suffered from extreme depression. He only climbed in the ring against Holyfield out of obligation. Clearly, he wanted no part of that fight. Not out of fear, but because he didn't care anymore. And the years after the fight showed how much pain he was in, with his weight ballooning from overeating and alcohol abuse, to the point of him almost dying from a diabetic coma. It's easy for us on the outside to just say "lots of money, I'd do anything" when many of us won't even put in the work to be good enough for a raise at our current jobs.

Bullshit. I don’t know how old you are I’ve lost my brother sister both parents and wife. Now inwould feel so much better with 10s of millions of dollars. You go on no matter what. The cushion of doing whatever you want when you want would be great. You’re telling me 10s of millions of dollars doesn’t heal wounds?
