I love listening to Douglas Stuart. He's so thoughtful and articulate. I'm half way through Shuggie Bain, and it's a long time since a book held my attention the way this one does.

I enjoyed this book by Douglas which is about great loss and love between a son and his Mother. Shuggie was bullied at school and left hungry as the bullies had ate his lunch and combined with being a carer for him Mother, Agnes he suffered from anxiety too. Shug her husband left her for another woman but also broke her so no one else would want her so sad. This book is so moving in many ways and Douglas brings this little family to life on every page.

It’s too bad that his mum didn’t get to see how successful he became in fashion never mind writing. She would have been so proud . What a lovely man. Brilliant.

Just finished reading and the raves are right. Wow, what a painter of scene and character you are, Douglas Stuart. There are many, painfully accurate observations for many of us. The loving work that went into this terrific book is evident -- highly recommended.

I adored this book. Beautiful metaphors and beautifully written altogether. It moved me to the core. All the characters had well-defined personalities and they become known to readers. It’s a great book in the complexity of living with alcoholism and still being able to retain a great love for the alcoholic because of those golden sober shining moments when the pause of the drink allows a short glimpse into the true essence of the drinker. A superbly earned Booker prize! Kudos Mr. Stuart. You gave us such a gift.

Thank you for sharing your story . I connected with you in so many ways listening to your audiobook . I grew up in USA with an alcoholic dad. He died from brain hemorrhage at age 51. Can't wait for heaven to meet him sober. Addiction is the Affliction of the gods of humanity. Such a talented man

Just finished reading Shuggie Bain and it’s pure dead brilliant! . I’m from Glasgow but this story could be set anywhere. You might also want to read Poverty Safari by Darren McGarvey if you enjoyed Shuggie. It’s also set in Glasgow and is amazing too. Thank you Douglas

Although raw and sad this is a gritty well written book. I feel there are many Agnes's out there who can relate to her and Shuggies story. Hope there's more to come from Douglas as not enough of Glasgow based stories out there.Couldnt put it down brilliant.💔🤗

I just want to comment the book in some way, as I know about the strange emotional state of being a single mother having all reasponsibilities of that strong connection between mother and child. The fears of not being able to give enough, weather it‘s financially or emotionally. I think Agnes closed her eyes refering to that just as she gave up simple care, which is boring work - more than the expression of mother love. I think many condemn the way Agnes is acting, but I know - I‘m not drinking- it‘s even harder than described in the Book and I just hope ist gives some kind of Understatement. Finally I really loved the book, so important to break with that taboo by finding words for it. Even today...

I’ve just finished the book, so wonderful. I have just had a weekend away and was glad to have time to really sink into it. I loved Shuggie and Leek and of course Agnes, a fabulous story of love and despair but ultimately hope.
