Doug Young - Shenandoah - Solo Guitar
Музыка
Shenandoah is a classic American folk tune. This is my solo acoustic guitar fingerstyle arrangement of this traditional song. This version was originally arranged for an internet-based joint project prompted by El McMeen, where many guitarists submitted arrangements, producing a wonderful diversity of styles. This arrangement, which is in DADGAD tuning, appears on my CD, Laurel Mill, and there is free tab on my website at www.dougyoungguitar.com
This video was shot and uploaded long ago, when You Tube was still fairly new, 4K video wasn't invented yet, and recorded on video tape! I hope you enjoy the tune in spite of the 2008-era quality.

Probably my favorite folk song, and your playing brings out the parts I love most.

Thanks!
There's a lot of folks who have talent. Not all devote the time and discipline that you obviously have. Then you've taken your gift one step further by recording it and posting so a guy like could run across it and be blessed with your playing. Thank you
Doug is one of the richest, warmest, and most elegant voices in fingerstyle guitar. Fabulous.
Absolutely beautiful! This song inspired me to write this tonight. Through all my highs and all my lows she's been there by my side. I share my dreams with her. I share my struggles with her. Sometimes we stay up all night and marvel at the heavens. She sings the songs of my heart. I haven't always made her look the best, but she doesn't complain. She helps me pave a road to one who will out do her, and she doesn't mind stepping into second place on that day. Her name is Havila. She is my guitar.
Beautiful. Thank you
So beautiful!! Thanks.
... so beautiful ! ...
That's beautiful.
beautiful!
Very beautiful.
Really enjoyed this. Just beautiful.
I just love this. Great arrangement and beautifully played.

What a great technique. Thanks
What a beautiful arrangement and performance Doug.
wonderful!
I love this song. One of my absolute favorites and with the acoustic it’s absolutely beautiful. I will play this over and over.
My God but that is so lovely
Great arrangement and delivery! Wow.
Magnificent! Great arrangement played with much feeling. Wonderful tone. Keep posting.
Soothes any wounded soul..
Such a classic. I hope to one day make an arrangement or tune that stands the test of time like this one. Just beautiful, Doug.
Doug, Impeccable playing...wonderful arrangement...and I absolutely love the sound of your Ryan...thank you for sharing! Billy Boy
Your guitar is as beautiful to look at as it is to listen to.
Wow, I really like your style! I can definitely see your connection with the music you're playing, and it's really cool. Great job!
THIS IS SO GORGEOUS. Beautiful job , sir
This is fantastic, Doug. Thanks for sharing, and thanks also for posting the free tab.
I just listened to this about ten times. This is one of my favourite songs, and this rendition of it just took Mason William's spot of number one on my list.
Doug, That is a beautiful arrangement and awesome playing!! 5*****
Very , very nice.
Thanks again Doug, I posted this to a friends page who just passed away, couldnt think of a better lullaby to send him off with! :)
5 STARS and TWO TEARY EYES
I cant thank you enough for posting this.. I have been slowly struggling my way through the gaddad tuning and this song really got my ears opened up.. Thanks for a beutiful performance too..
What a marvellous arrangement, I have spent all Sunday afternoon trying to nail it. All the very best to you from Lancashire UK.
What a lovely arrangement of a beautiful song. My teacher has just started working on this, and he wants me to watch you play it a hundred times--should not be a problem.
That's a real man's stache.. Beautiful guitar work.
7 years or so ago, when i was in high school, your recordings had a big influence on my playing style. i never really knew what true fingerstyle was until i heard your recordings of "wayfaring stranger" and "no two ways about it". i bought a transcription from you, and you sent it in the mail with a note that said "thanks pat! -doug young". i believe that note is stuck on my fridge today. thanks for helping a kid learn the guitar, and keep playing!
My 13 old daughter is now playing this, albeit at a slower pace, given when I practiced this piece she slowly grew to love it. Hoping in a month or so she'll be more then confident enough to play it publicly.
Just lovely! I know and can play Lawrence Juber's version, also in DADGAD, but this is in some lovely, yet subtle and elegant ways, even more flowingly melodic. Thanks so much for sharing your incredible gift with us all Doug!
Just lovely! I know and cna play Lawrence Juber's version, also in DADGAD, but this is in some lovely, yet subtle and elegant ways, even more flowingly melodic. Thanks so much for sharing your incredible gift with us all Doug!
Beautiful! I had stumbled onto your site about 6 months ago looking for a Shenandoah tab. Yours was by far the best. I can play it....but not as beautifully as you! Thanks for the free tabs. We people who aren't as talented rely on people like you.
Gorgeous sound, sublime playing! Shades of Martin Simpson. I just went to itunes and bought your album on the strength of this.
Very nice and "strong guitar feeling" dude.
@avesbirdgun yes, I use a stereo out from the guitar to a two channel preamp where I can blend them however I want. I can leave them as stereo, with each pickup on each side, or pan them to the center for mono, or anything in between.
Really enjoyed this, Doug! Thanks for sharing the tabs on your website. May see you one of these days at the cafe.
Beautiful, sweet rendition, Doug!! I love it!! It's very different from the rendition I presently have posted on KZread. I like the way you have a lot of interesting fingerpicking activity,... and within that, the familiar melody slowly and dreamily flows along. Nice relaxed, phrasing and every note sounds so clear and rich. Wow,... you're good. A nice lush recording as well. Thanks for posting this classic.
Very nice...
@squirrel282 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I have quite a few gentle ballad type tunes that are probably at least somewhat similar. Check out my other videos, like In My Life or WIldwood Flower, and there are also tunes (and some tabs) on my web site. Thanks again!
great
Nice job on both! Hopefully I'll have a new CD completed sometime this year.
Doug, I downloaded your tab for this about 2 years ago. It was my first intro to DADGAD and still one of my favorites to play. I love this arrangement, and especially how it sounds with you playing on that Ryan! Looking forward to your new CD. I bought Laurel Mill at the same time I started learning this song. Thanks! Sandy
Very lush and creative arrangement. Beautifully done. Shenandoah is a longtime favorite of mine. I just ordered your CD largely because of this piece, which I discovered when searching for good approaches to recording acoustic guitar in the home studio. You've also gotten me interested in DADGAD tuning to expand the sound palette of the guitar, so I'm definitely going to get your recent book on the topic shortly. Thanks.
@JIMCPAMEEK Hi Jim, the tab was done for an earlier recording, if I recall, so I probably made a few changes by the time I shot the video, without even realizing it! Yes, I'm not sure why that just says "harm". Sounds dangerous :-) Those are natural harmonics at the 12th fret. The open D string being in parens in the tab looks like a mistake, that's just the normal pickup to the melody, a regular open 4th string. Hope that helps!
Thanks, I haven't played Wayfaring Stranger since I arranged it way back when, unfortunately. Maybe I should dig it out and relearn it!
I really appreciate this arrangement. This song flows with a gentle rhythm without any sudden stops for harmonic chords that tend to distract from the melody. I'm just learning fingerstyle and would love to know if you have any other music that lends to this style. Well done!
That Ryan is cedar and koa. I use D'Addario EJ16 (light gauge) with the top 2 strings replaced with a 13 and a 17
Ugh this was hell to learn when I was like 8 lol sounds nice to me now
Wow....
@mayberry090 Glad you liked it, and congratulations on gettting it down. You mean have the tab highlight the melody somehow? Seems like a good idea, I see if I can figure out a way to do that.
@jamesobrien777 Thanks for the kind words. Your comment got me wondering if the composer was known - I know it's a public domain tune, but sometimes there is a known composer. Apparently in this case, no one knows who wrote it and it was originally a sea shanty.
There's an mp3 on my site under "music", I think. It's also on my CD
@sgsanders1966 This is a Ryan Mission Grand Concert, Koa back and sides, Cedar top
That's great to hear! Let us know how she does with it.
@craigguitar22 thanks! tab's available free on my website
@ik8rih It's a Kevin Ryan Mission Grand Concert
How old is this video?? Ha ha, brilliant! Just downloaded the tab to this. Thanks for sharing Doug

+Doug Young very smooth doug-- very fun to listen to... i have a taylor 818e i purchased a while back, its big and bassy! what other guitar can i get in the taylor line with more mids---any thoughts are appreciated
@Desmond8043 You're welcome!
for yur first video here, you sound is stunning! Aghhhr a Ryan! I dream about that guitar, seriously..... Was that DADGAD? beautifull playing indeed. Pascal
@mayberry090 Mark Hanson used to make all his bass notes bold in his hand-written tab, which I always thought was useful. Most tab programs these days don't make it easy to set the font on individual notes, but maybe there's a way to make it work. I like the idea!
Hi Pascal, yes, this arrangement is in DADGAD.
Ahh, the peacefull shenendoah valley.
I’ve just returned from a holiday in the US. While we were there we walked alongside the Shenandoah. I hope you don’t mind but I’ve used this clip in my home video as it was perfect for the clips I filmed around Harper’s Ferry. I’m now learning to play the track myself having found the tab on your website. Greetings from the UK.

Thanks, it's great to hear you liked this enough to use in your video. Hope you had a great trip, and enjoy playing the tune!
Yep, and you tube's horrid video quality back then smudges it up really well, not doing me any favors :-) Too bad there's no way to update videos. Seeing myself on video was a good reason to shave it off!
Doug; robb here from igc. I always love your arrangements. How are you holding the guitar in an inclined position without a support? Arm pressure? The guitar clearly wouldn't adopt that position naturally. I've also heard of folks using little silicone sticky pads to help but this video is clearly older than that. Beautiful guitar as well.

hi Robb! Back when I recorded this - ancient times :-) I was using a "neck up" gizmo that sits on my leg and holds the guitar up. It attaches to the guitar with suction cups. I really like that, it makes the guitar more comfortable, makes it easier to do stretches and so on. But it's a gizmo that you have to remember to have with you, and I hate to be dependent on something I have to carry around (besides the guitar), so I sort of drifted away from it. It's probably there on some other older videos. It just doesn't show up, black on black or something - especially with the poorer quality older videos.
Thank you! Very beautiful. That is one of the most beautiful sounding guitars I've ever heard! Is it a Ryan?
My Uncle died last night. His wish was for me to play this song in his honor upon his death. I feel so alone, haven't played guitar in years. I am heartbroken and feeling lost. I dont know why this gives me peace to comment this, but maybe itll help with my grief to put it out in the world that my Uncle Tim was the coolest guy in the world.

@DougYoungGuitar And can you tell me what your signal chain was (mics through to video)?
btw I downloaded your tabs and thank you for that. open D tuning I'm guessing? also, its a lot easier than I thought. beautiful arrangement =]
hey¬ can i have to link of the tab pls? i need it,, thanks
Doug, Still love the Laurel Mill CD and learning a few of the tunes...have done versions of 'Shenandoah' and 'I Will' also on KZread at my site "Nige2410"..any plans for any more CD recordings ?
A very emotive and haunting tune DYG. Wonderfully executed and played with great touch, really brings this piece to life. And many, many thanks for sharing this tabbed arrangement with us. I hope to do it some justice by playing half as well as your good self.
Just lovely. I down loaded the tab from your website and have worked on it and find it to be much easier than it sounds like it would be. In comparing the tab to your video, it looks like you repeat measure 53 through 56 at the end and then modify the ending a bit. If you get this and are willing to reply, can you explain the notation in measure 33? I don't understand what this is. I assume harm is for harmonics?
Well I appear to be about 10 years late on this, but it appears that the TAB does not match the playing, at about the 45 - 50 second mark to the replaying of the intro. Unfortunately I am not good enough to remap it. I was hoping to use this piece as a DADGAD learning experience, but possibly not.

I'll take a look. The tab was done quite a while before this video, and probably matches the version on my 2003 CD better. But I tend to play it at least a little differently each time, and this was 5 years later. I'll see if I can create a version that matches this video.

OK, I've put up a revised version on my website that should match this performance better: dougyoungguitar.com/tab/Shenandoah_KZread_Version.pdf You also might find this helpful: www.soundslice.com/slices/hg1cc/ - a video lesson on the tune using the "bouncing ball in the tab" approach. I think I see a few spots in this tab that aren't quite right, I had a lot of trouble with the soundslice tab editor, but most of it is close - tho again, likely different from this old You Tube performance. The differences are all minor, different in-between chord tones, little embellishments that I add or discard, and so on. When I play tunes like this, I'm thinking of the big arc, the melody and harmony, and exactly what I do to fill things out in between can vary at least a little each time.

@@DougYoungGuitar Thanks so much. The sound slice was very insightful. Now I just have to work at it bar by bar over and over. It will be a great learning experience and a beautiful piece to play.
who's watching it in 2016 *0*
