DOUG | The True Story of Doug Heir | Original Adam Ray Documentary

THE TRUE STORY OF DOUG HEIR
DOUG HEIR just might be the greatest champion you’ve
never heard of. He currently holds the WORLD
RECORDS in the Para Olympics javelin, Discus, and Shot
Put. In total, Doug has won three hundred and thirty-six
GOLD MEDALS throughout his prolific athletic career.
And he did it all in a wheelchair.
But perhaps the most awe-inspiring thing about Doug is
that he didn’t stop there. Doug would go on to become
not only one of the most decorated professional
athletes of all time, but a passionate advocate for those
who were facing similar challenges in their own lives.
From the day his entire life changed in 1979, to the day
he broke three world records, to the day he passed his
bar exam to become an attorney and everything in
between, Doug Heir’s story is one of a kind.
It’s about damn time for the rest of the world to hear it.

Took me four or five minutes of listening before I walked over to the screen to figure out once and for all if this was satire or not (only because of the channel it’s on). But surprisingly, happily, it’s not. 🙂 The brotherly love in their story really hits. Brother saying, “no, I won’t throw you back in the pool-you have me, I’ll always be here.” Sneaking him out of the hospital. Waking up early to train. It’s really a beautiful thing. And I’m sure he didn’t do it to be “good” or ‘cause it was the “right” thing to do. He did it because…brothers. Makes me really miss mine. This is cool, Adam. Nice job 😌

Damn this story is all to familiar for me, almost hard to hear when he said "and my life changed just like that". I'm an arm amputee and the arm is paralyzed from the brachial plexus nerve being torn, so I have no feeling/movement in my arm or shoulder. I also pretty much destroyed the entire left side of my body, along with a head injury which luckily healed itself. I had a motorcycle accident in the highway when I was 17. Hearing this guys story and everything he's achieved is incredible, it's pretty hard to listen to though. Especially seeing what his family went through because I know for those 5 months I was in the hospital my family was completely devastated, even to this day it's changed their lives too. Accidents don't just change that person, it affects everyone around them. This was an excellent documentary, thank you for this.

My cousin is a quadriplegic and he would love this and has just about the best attitude in life such as doug… this makes me wanna call him up right now and I think I just might. My cousin joe has his doctorate in psychology and is the brightest light I can think of. Joe was a football player in high school and was gonna go to Norte dame or Wisconsin to play football full ride and was in wrestling practice that end of his senior year and a kid fell on him just wrong and broke his neck. He’s never been able to use his hands or legs but blows through a tube and moves around better than most I tell ya, and has an amazing sense of humor about life just like this. Amazing work.
