I work in mental health and Doug is SO fucking spot on with this. People seek out antidepressant therapy just to glorify the fact that life fucking sucks sometimes. "No, that's not it, I must be ill".

I used to be really creative and have ambition and the daily grind would make me feel dead inside. My moods were all over the place. But my doctor gave me Seroquel and now I have no original thoughts any more. I've stopped creating anything, and now I want an accounting job. I'm not even being sarcastic, this shit legitimately switches my thoughts off completely. Anything I'm saying, I don't know where the fuck it comes from any more. It doesn't make me happy, it makes me indifferent which is good enough.

When I feel down he makes me laugh, when I'm up I avoid him like the plague. He's like the medicine that tastes really nasty and that's why it works on what's nasty inside you.

Doug Stanhope rocks. A worthy successor to the mighty Bill Hicks Ive got 7 of his albums and a couple of bootlegs. I was listening to 1 of them on my walkman on the bus, and i was pissing myself laughing out loud while people were staring at me.

So well said brutus! It's pretty awesome how Doug can say such spiritually wise things in his act and he's an athiest. I could care less he's the funniest comedian alive and he's so right on the money about this. Anti-depressants are the biggest drug pushers in the history of the world. We need wise speakers like Stanhope to help us realize these things and heal by LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!!!!!

Guys - thanks for your comments. I've decided to remove the comments of the brain donor guy, cause he's boring now. That means I've taken out your responses as well. Tell you what though - if you're a religious crusader why not come along to a show and start heckling... Doug gets the money, we all get a good laugh and you might even save the odd soul.

I was kind of depressed at the state of the world, and my inability to comprehend what happens when I die. I was contemplating taking some sort of drug to stop these depressing thoughts from effecting me. Then I watched Doug Stanhope do stand-up for the first time, and realized there wasn't anything wrong with me really. I just had to stop being depressed.

@mikeisapro Definitely Nietzsche as well. The first thing of his I ever read was On the Prejudices of Philosophers from Beyond Good & Evil. The wealth of insight in those few pages I found incredible. So in case you haven't read it already I would say wholeheartedly to read that puppy. Also, I would recommend Stirner's The Ego and Its Own if you're very interested in Nietzsche's analysis of subjugation of ego. But yeah, Nietzsche's great stuff.

Those that I see as the most thoughtful and original would be people like Schopenhauer, Spinoza, Hume, Dostoevsky, Kafka, Mann etc. They are the ones who humble me greatly. That's how you dismantle the government. There will be no revolution with weapons and war. They want that, in fact, that aids them because that gives them more profits and greater the reason for the governments to declare martial law. Non-compliance is the only thing that could dismantle the government in this age.

The Internet in general, yes that's a goodness... Farcebook & their ilk are a subversion, designed to distract and to harvest our data for a price, known well in advance, post 9/11, now we know better, trackers on every site, all our personal information sold on, it's a fire-sale of data and most of us are too self-absorbed to notice as they provide the narcissist the perfect walled-garden for us to play in, they have made us into technological lotus-eaters... oblivious and without ambition.

I was turned onto pot, because I have insomnia. I took prescriptions to sleep, then became dependant to them. Prescription pills for pain and sleep disorders are opiates, which are a thousand times worse than pot. Why pot isn't legal is because pharmaceutical co.s CANNOT patent a natural drug, hence the chemical engineering. As far as rage is concerned, that has nothing to do with pot, that is that particular person. Legalizing pot would destroy the greedy petro chemical companies n thats good!

As I said, he gives the audience what they expect. He trims his apparent attitudes to fit the expectations of his audience. People go to see him be "politically incorrect", if he has any beliefs which don't fit he needs to change them to fit in with the expectations. Being reasonable is not an option, he has to appear unreasonable because reasonable doesn't sell tickets. You are right, I am full of myself, and I don't change my views to be popular or to make people laugh.

I agree, but the phenomenon of social networking (I guess I mean the internet in general), could be used for good. Globalized information is the closest thing to the singularity theory our species has ever been. Although globalization is not a post-industrial phenomenon, the global awareness of it as a process is. We could run this ship. But I don´t think we will in our lifetime. Not as long as the web continuously get more monopolized and wasted by the years.... ...ah... fuck......
