Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery, The Shape of Water) joins us this week to share his accidental introduction to the world of creature features and how he’s cemented his legacy as one of its most iconic actors with captivating performances in Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Hocus Pocus, and Oscar best picture winning The Shape of Water. Appearing in countless films together, Doug talks about his special relationship with mastermind Guillermo del Toro and how the two have a unique shorthand way of communicating with one another. We also talk about his early success in McDonald’s commercials, difficult lessons learned from his father’s early passing, and why his contract doesn’t allow for him to be dubbed over.

Doug Jones is legit a national treasure. Super talented, and someone who is genuinely nice and appreciates his fans. Great episode!

After discovering him, I wondered why he wasn't more famous. Like, everything that Jim Carrey initially became famous for, Doug Jones could do better and still does shockingly well. Now, I'm just thankful that he never got to a point where he was well known enough to be destroyed by the entertainment and media ecosystem. The world is better because he's in it.
One of my favorite episodes, its nice to finally hear Doug Jones in a proper "get to know you" interview.

I feel like you meant to say INSIDE OF DOUG JONES 😆
He's one of those rare actors that can emote effectively under a lot of prosthetics. For example , if he can't smile as broadly , he turns his head slightly. All these little things that you notice when you watch his work. From Hellboy, Falling Skies, Discovery... He's a master of it. Him and Andy Serkis are probably the top tier actors when it comes to acting under a lot of make-up.
The point in the beginning when Doug mentions the roles of him and the actress in Shape of Water and you (Michael) goes "good lord" is priceless.
Loved hearing Doug speaking. I devour every interview he does. Wish I could find him doing a breakdown of all his imdb credits.
I am a new Doug Jones fan! He just came onto my radar a couple months ago when someone wrote about him on Quora and I realized I love his work but never knew who he was. Now I have to watch “The Shape of Water.” So interesting to hear how he developed his body movements and expressions into an amazing career, especially after enduring bullying for some of the very things that he was able to transform and use to his advantage. I love that he was honest about his chin, so refreshing and rare and so many of us can relate. Michael, so glad you asked him about Buffy at the end because as a long-term Buffy fan from the beginning, I would have lost it if nobody brought that up! I really enjoyed this interview and was struck by how good-natured, humble, and genuinely kind Doug is. What a treat to learn about him and his craft. I always appreciate you Michael since I found your podcast last year and wow Doug, what an unbelievable talent and lovely man.
These interviews are so great. And Michael's voice is so soothing to my ADHD and helps me focus at work. Doug was just a joy to listen to.

He's right about the meds I got on one that made me feel like I was literally going to die from shaking. And just my mind was shaking the only explanation I can explain about it.
Doug Jones is a chameleon when he steps into to play a role. He becomes the character just like that. I think his best role is in Star Trek Discovery because you really get to see the performance and it's not just the prosthetics, the physical performance where he brings depth and dimension to the role. Even the Silver Surfer performance with all the physical movement performance felt like ballet by mimicking Laurence Fishburne's dialogue. One of my favorite roles during the early days was in Buffy The Vampire Slayer where he plays this freakish looking creature that steals the voices of all the residents of Sunnyvale and you can tell he is just scary.

i had this thought, you have definitely seen Doug Jones in something, if not like three or four different things at least, but the likelihood that you know who he is so miniscule because most of his roles are as creatures and feature him doing contortions and generally being unrecognizable. whats insane to me is that the first thing i ever saw him in is still the only thing i have seen where he just is himself no suit, John Dies At the End.

Doug isn’t only à sweet person but also a gifted actor ❤ These creatures that take shape and life thanks to him are extraordinary 👍 Guillermo Del Toro is among my favorite ❤ Sensational episode 🙌💙💙 Michael
I have no words to express how much I love Doug Jones! he is the most underrated, talented, magical performer/actor of his generation! he truly deserves to be as famous and recognised as all the Streeps and Washingtons of this era!
I love Doug's work. Doug does a fantastic job with emoting using his body.
Doug Jones!!! Love this guy, great character actor. Loved him on The Shape of Water, Hell Boy, and Saru on Star Trek Discovery. Happy Tuesday Michael for bringing on this incredible person on your beautiful podcast. Keep it up with getting the great guests. We are here for you Micheal ❤ Your doing fantastic and Thank you for helping with Animal Rescue and keep being you, don't change. Thank you Micheal again for you and your podcast.
Met Doug as I was the ticket girl at a small convention and he was such a sweetheart. Most memorable thing about him was he hugged me and thanked me for being a fan. He said that because me being a fan he is able to have a home. That always stuck with me and easily one of my favorite hugs
One of the biggest surprises is finding out that he was Mac Tonite! One of the best characters McDonald's created in that time. He was so smooth. Thank you Michael for another great interview!

I have a Doug Jones signed Mac Tonight happy meal. :)
When he was talking about his wife’s happiness though. 🥹
Doug Jones is my favorite actor. I love everything he does. Bringing all those creatures with all that makeup to life with such extraordinary grace is a gift I'm in awe of.
I knew this about David Hyde Pierce before Doug said anything about it in this interview, I don't remember where I learned it but I've known it for some time, and it absolutely deepened my respect for him. To hear Doug tell it just makes it all the more special. I just love Doug so much, he's a singular talent, and to get this kind of insight into who he is as a person is just lovely. HE is lovely.
Saru is one of the kindest, most thoughtful characters in any show ever. ❤️ ♥️ The Baron and his "family" are the most adorable monsters ever.
AWESOME GUEST! I wouldn’t say he’s underrated, but certainly under appreciated. Everyone has seen something that Doug Jones has done. One of the finest actors ever and you’d never recognize him damn near all of the time! Thanks Rosie and Ryan!
What a great guy in every way, as a person and as an artist. I'm glad he and Guillermo crossed paths because, without them both, the world of cinema wouldn't have some of the most exquisite monsters ever created.
Having met Mr. Jones more than once, I know personally that he is gracious, kind, caring and so personable with all his fans, coworkers and anyone he meets. His amazing talent and artistic brilliance aside, Doug only makes any project more dynamic, interesting and clearly always something to see and and come back to. Thanks Doug for sharing your warm heart and amazing career. Michael I think this is my favorite interview of 2022 so far! Thank you Doug and Michael! Bravo guys!
Doug should be honored with a Oscar, because of all his Mastery in Film and TV.
Another fantastic episode. I've only known(remembered) his name for about 5 years. But now that I know to look, he's been EVERYWHERE throughout all my favorite movies and TV shows for decades.
Doug Jones is such an incredible actor. It was amazing to hear about his journey. Hope you are feeling better, Rosey. Anxiety can be really debilitating. Did Ryan break the mic at the end? Lol.
When Doug was explaining pans labyrinth it was just f’ing awesome. Like, what a guest to have!! One of my favorite podcast episodes on inside of you so far.
Doug’s one of the handful of celeb’s I’ve met. Genuine sweetheart. Once I found out he had an Instagram, I followed him. He actually took the time to check out the art on mine and left a lovely comment.
I have been keeping up with this man’s work since he played a Gentleman on Buffy, I am obsessed with Doug Jones! He’s truly a talented performer
Ever since Brando came on the scene acting changed from the other-the-top, theater-inspired to the super-intimate, nuance performances that we all know. Doug has to be able to convey that through layers and layers of makeup, prosthetics, etc. and somehow not under or overact. Since the days of Lon Chaney (Sr. and Jr.) he really is in a league of his own.

Doug Jones is a LEGEND and you can barely ever recognize him! His body of work is incredible too! VERY underrated!
Big fan of Doug Jones. Great stories about Guillermo and David Hyde Pierce. I really hope he gets a chance to meet Pierce and have that moment of mutual respect. In my limited career in the entertainment industry, I did cross paths with Bette Midler (a bit before Hocus Pocus) and her husband. I WAS a fan of hers but was not after encountering her and the spouse in the work place. She must be a fan of yours to be on her best behavior. Another great interview Michael.
My favorite part of Tuesday 💙 Michael 🤘
50 years old!? Wow! Lex Luthor proves that 50 is the new 30. Great interview. Love the work of Doug Jones as well.
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Doug Jones in 2018 at Ottawa ComicCon and BY FAR(!!!!) he was the nicest guest I ever had the pleasure to meet in person. Even though I only got to talk with him for maybe a minute, he treated me like I was the most important person in his world for that one minute. He was apologetic that they had run out of Saru photos for signing but we talked about Discovery he told me that Discovery had been picked up another season and he shared my enthusiasm for the show. He let me have a photo in front of his table with him and he was just so friendly.
What a great guy Doug Jones is, excellent podcast Michael! 👏🥰I was checking IMDB for some of those earlier movies Doug mentioned and he wasn't credited for Dark Tower so I submitted an IMDB update and I gave a link to this podcast and the relevant timestamps so they can verify the info. 😎👍
Doug Jones!!! So happy for this episode. Thank you!
Really looking forward to getting to know this kind and talented man a bit better. Thank you Rosey🙏🏻. Safest travels to you. Looking forward to seeing you at Raleigh this weekend. Happy week everyone 😊💙

Oh man! The master of “being” a creature. I love Doug Jones. Very excited to sit down and watch this one. As always, that’s for making our weeks, Rosey! ❤
Doug Jones is an absolutely phenomenal actor capable of expressing the deepest thoughts and emotion through a purely physical performance. It has been wonderful to watch him on Star Trek Discovery where he has been given a chance to express himself through dialogue as well as his physicality.
You just get everybody. Love your podcast!🇫🇮
Always loved Doug's work with del toro and have such admiration for his craft, but haven't had the chance to hear him speak about himself really before and I can now say I absolutely love him! he's so sweet and charming.
I just admire this channel. I'm uncertain of how many episodes I've watched at this point but Inside Of You is the absolute most true to life podcast. It's therapy for a lot of us. 💛
Talked with Doug a few years ago at a tiny horror convention. No one was at his table, so I was able to chat with him for about ten minutes. Super friendly and cool.
Yay! So happy you got Doug Jones on the podcast! He is the best! Gosh you get the greats Rosenbaum. This one is probably my favorite. 😊
Gotta love Dougie. You can't meet this man and not love him for life, he gives the best hugs and takes the most fun pics with fans. ❤☕☕
I didn't realize all the amazing characters he played. Thanks for bringing this interview to us. Hope you are having a fantastic week so far!!
I met Doug Jones once. He was so warm and kind and silly in a very funny way!
This week’s episode is delightful. Doug definitely opens up and has so many great stories. He has such a positive outlook. I did not realize that he played so many characters. A part 2 would be awesome. Nice stache Ryan!!
The reason Doug Jones has worked so consistently and the reason make up fx people would think of him first is because he's the nicest guy in show biz. Reputation matters and Dougie's reputation is that he's a dedicated pro and a joy to work with.
Admired his work for decades, great to see he's such a nice guy as well as talented.
Already know this interview is going to be interesting. He's such a valuable asset to the industry and need more credit.
Amazing story w David Hyde Pierce. That had me tear up! Lol Such grace in this guy. Definitely an interview I’ll watch again. Fascinating!
This is a real treat.. Doug Jones in one of the hardest working actors today..
Always loved your work especially in Smallville! You're TRULY ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTORS OF ALL TIME. THANK YOU...
OMG! Uve been killing it with the guests lately. 😁
I was so happy you had Doing Jones on the podcast today! He's amazing and such a range of characters he's been in his illustrious career! Thank you so much! Much love to Michael and Ryan ❤️ Michael, can you please do an ASMR channel where you're just reading anything? Love your voice and it's so soothing to listen to
Great interview as always Michael, and I love this guest you had on. He's very fun to listen to and very well spoken. His voice and demeanor gives me the impression that he's a really humble and great person to be around, so thank you for having him on.
Excited to watch this one! When is Sam Witwer gonna make an appearance??
Doug Jones is a national treasure and an all around great human!
This was best interview! The vibe between them was the best and definitely one of my favorites!
Doug and Rosey should star in a production of “Of Mice and Men” together.
Really great you can be so vulnerable on here with your struggles with anxiety it’s helps so many people watching/ listening. Also, thanks for getting ANOTHER guest I didn’t know I wanted to hear from SO much. Cheers!
Doug Jones is a delightful to watch, I adored his stories about growing up and how genuinely appreciative he is for his experiences. Excellent interview Rosey ❤️
I would LOVE for there to be a book of Doug's body of work, including notes and concept illustrations and process photos. It only seems fitting; he's embodied such a colorful array of characters and has some lovely insights about his work and the people he works with.
It's so interesting I was watching Hellboy yesterday and now you got Doug Jones as your guest so cool. Abe Sapien is another favorite character with 2 performances with Jones trying to match David Hyde Pierce's dialogue with the physical movements. Also the late Roy Dotrice appearing that film was so good because he was my favorite Zeus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. I also enjoyed Dotrice's voice acting roles with Spider-Man: TAS, Batman: TAS because of his Shakespearean voice.

What a lovely guy! Could have listened to you two talk for another hour.
Why have I never watched this before it’s so much better than just listening- love the podcasts and the Indiana Jones standing beside you :)
It was cool to hear the story of David Hyde Pierce voicing Abe Sapien in HB1, but choosing to not be credited for it. Im really glad they went with Doug's voice in HB2! Doug is a fantastic actor and deserves all the credit!
I’ve never seen this podcast before so to start watching these podcasts with Doug Jones was an absolute delight, he’s my absolute favourite character actor, he’s so, well just wonderful 🤓
This man is a legend. I didn't know who he was until I watched Star Trek Discovery and looked him up. 171 actor credits on IMDB (He is often in heavy prosthetics)
The most well known unknown character actor ever. His work is insane. He played in so many great movies. Fantastic actor.
BEST EPISODE YET, thank you Michael and Doug. Doug Jones, you are a masterpiece and your “Gentleman” performance in Hush will haunt me until the day I die. BRAVO !!!!!!
I love Doug Jones so much, not only for his Movie roles but he just seems like such a kind and loving person, I haven't gotten around to watching What We Do In The Shadows yet but if he's in it I really need too.
super talented and an absolute gentle and kind man, love doug. and as always love the podcast :D
Doug is an absolute delight, so calming and understanding and non judgemental. He is helpful towards others and shares good ideas for self soothing. He also is very funny too, what a lovely person. With regards to the nose job, do it. Remember the Greg Sulkin interview where he mentioned that lady who did cocaine and her septum rotted away, well that was Daniella Westbrook. She had it repaired but she still doesn't look how she did, so if you're going to get it done, do it quick. You don't want that for you.
Doug seems like an amazing human being. Such a kind soul
I am more and more impressed with Doug Jones, with each interview I see. Seems like a genuine, kind, intelligent human being. And just so happens to be stupidly talented. I hate comparing people, however, as a huge Lon Chaney fan, I truly think Doug is the Lon Chaney of our generation. Supreme acting talent, and can become these incredible characters through amazing makeup.
Loved Doug Jones’ work on Falling Skies.
Doug Jones is one of the most sincere and kind of all G-d's children. Love you, man.
This was so pleasant. I hope he returns some day.
Doug Jones is one of my favorites, I meet him at a comic con a couple times, now when I run into him at any con he remembers my name now. I am in film School and Doug Jones is one of the actors I want tp work with
Amazing episode. Love hearing success stories of nice guys like this.
One of thee best actors ever! Thank you Michael for shedding more light to Uncle Dougie
Doug is so amazing.
Doug is amazing. Great get
Amazing podcast Great interviewer (Michael Rosenbaum) Great guest (Doug Jones) Buffy references is amazing👍
Think this is my absolute favourite of all your interviews (and I love Supernatural and Buffy). This was thoroughly interesting and I was riveted from start to finish. He has played so many roles I wasn't aware of (including the Buffy one actually) and is just completely absorbing as a guest.
Got to love Doug Jones. Scholarships in his name as well? Great guy,.. 👍
Looking forward to this one. I am looking forward to learning more about him. Inside of you Tuesday is the best day of the week.
I really adore how your guests open up and share their personal stories, fears and most horrible moments. I wish my 20 year old self had known that other people, especially actors aren't perfect either and are just like everyone else with fears and dreams and wishes, ups and downs. Your podcast is pure gold and I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I still remember Doug from that one Buffy episode, which I think was the creepiest and I think it stood out to me because he had no verbal dialogue whatsoever. I've seen much more of his work since and he's just brilliant and what a sweet and kind person to talk to. What an amazing, kind and wonderful human being.
What a great interview!! Loved learning more about Doug Jones.
great episode Doug has been in many great films what a star he is so humble
He is the only reason I watch discovery. He's brilliant in it
Doug Jones is an unprecedented MASTER of movement and acting. He will be remembered among the greatest performers of all time.
He looks fabulous for being 62! If I didn't know better, I'd say he was in his 40s at most!
Doug was a great guest. Another fantastic episode!
So happy that you finally got Doug on. Was it my suggestion from awhile back? Hope so. It's great to hear more about him and life. I bet he could do a great Jeff Goldblum impression.
I need more of this, an hour wasn't enough 😩
Great episode! As Saru, Doug is simply amazing. The way he moves and walks, his voice, all point towards a balanced being. But when it's needed, the ganglia come in and he can be menacing. Also, Vulcans, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans all walk the same way. Saru doesn't, he walks the Kelpian way, which is very distinct.
