Doug Bradley reads The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860 - 1935)

Ойын-сауық

Gilman's enigmatic and disturbing tale, first published in 1892. Ghost story? Descent into madness? Women trapped behind strange patterns? The imagination controlled and imprisoned by the rational strictures of the patriarchy? Or just a tale of awful wallpaper? Possibly all of this and more.
Includes a biographical introduction to Charlotte by Doug.

I was the person who recommended this fantastic story to you. It was at Monster Mania Con last October. I’m very glad that you took the time to read this, you read it quite well. Also, thank you for the mention! Also, your quite right about my name, it is unusual…and it has both a b and an r in it. Haha!

The fact this channel doesn’t have at least 16 million subscribers is the real crime here

Thank YOU for this wonderful read, Mr. Bradley! What great classics. I've recently watched a screen version of this story, a movie released not so long ago, maybe, in 2021 or 2022, and I quite liked the film as well.

I absolutely love this story! It is very commonly taught in American colleges in their Intro to Literature classes. Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell was a very strange man, a very respected doctor who treated people like Charlotte Perkins Gilman but also Owen Wister and Theodore Roosevelt, and a writer himself. Weir Mitchell wrote novels, short stories, and poetry.

Thank you, it was a revelatory experience to reread this story with the biographical context you shared and while listening to your narration-especially when I followed it up with reading Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour."

Had a huge book as a kid. A collection of old short stories. Mainly horror. The one that always sticks in my mind, is this one.

I remember reading this as a kid. I guess you could say it was first exposure to what essentially was a psychological horror story.

I confess I’ve heard of this story but I’ve never actually read it, so I suppose this isn’t a bad way to introduce myself to it. Merry Christmas to you Doug and a Happy New Year!
