For how long do you do it when you do the routine? A certain amount of time or "reps"? I've been trying to get into doing these little routines as well but not sure how much I'm supposed to be doing daily approximately to see at least some small results.

@@MM-bm5zx There are stages of skill development. In guitar you will go pretty slow at first and you might feel that you don't improve but it's ultimately related of how much time you spent practicing DAILY (if you practice one hour like Monday and you don't pick it up again until 2 weeks later, yeah you won't improve any time soon). Try to practice at least half-hour everyday, even more I would say. You'll find out that your fingers doesn't hurt that much and playing guitar is actually becoming a pleasant experience. That's when you normally will practice a lot more because things are easier... Until you start playing something that goes differently compared to what you've been doing and your muscle memory needs to be readjusted again. This is a critical point because most people feel comfortable with just leaving their skill at that level and don't improve anymore when they should cause you got to learn more techniques/songs/scales/chord shapes/etc to get to a point when you don't have that much struggle with new exercises. - Beginner: Slow at first, real fast improvement lately - Intermediate: Fast improvement at first, slow lately (critical point) - Advance: balanced and haves knowledge enough to start doing different kinds of practice without much difficulty and will master them in a shorter period of time. Most likely to practice less but more specific stuff. Finally, remember to enjoy the instrument. Your skill will get better regularly if you have a hard technical exercise routine but also leave room to play things that you want to play, learn to improvise, learn chords to a song you like very much, etc

@@GuilleSMasini I just want to emphasizer the DAILY part of Guillermo's response. Even if you can only do 10 minutes or 5, you are better off doing something. That doesn't mean you can become Yngwie with 5 mins a day! I'm just saying try not to skip a day, even if you don't do a long session. That is a great side-benefit of these exercises: You have 5 minutes with your guitar, what do you do? Do one of these exercises. Maybe tomorrow you will get to play for hours, but you did something useful with the time you had today.

  • @mattgilbert7347

What I like about this lesson, apart from his relaxed, calm, objective demeanor (i.e no "attitude" on display here, in the negative sense of "attitude") is that he doesn't start with a big showy display of speed (what I call the "look at me" intro), he starts with something most every beginner can do. Then, he moves slowly into the more tricky parts. Even experienced players should run through these exercises, as the fingers and the brain *really* don't like talking to each other this way, and that radial ulnar nerve that connects 3 & 4 is stronger in some people than it is in others. Just in general, I find if I am away from the guitar for more than 48 hours, I lose a lot of muscle memory. I'm maybe a bit older than the average viewer of this lesson; when I was learning there was no internet, no youtube, no forums. If you wanted a teacher you had to actually go to a class and PAY - a lot, and that's if you could find a good teacher. In my small hometown, we had one, and eventually, he had to stop due to poor health. Mostly, we all learned by ear and a few shared TAB books. Younger guys have no idea how lucky they are, having access to such a wealth of knowledge and skilled teachers, online.

I've been trying to get back into the swing of things (Incredibly out of practice) and a majority of things covered on this channel were only superficially covered by my teachers (if at all, my teacher basically made us do nothing but one or two Carcassi pieces while he yelled at the one kid in the back practicing Dragonforce). I'm definitely gonna be watching a ton of your content because it's very easy to grasp, approachable, and a definite asset to aspiring guitarists web wide.

I’ve been doing this excercises only for one week and my playing has improved immensely. For that I do reps like this: 2 finger walks (6 repetitions x each pair of fingers) 2 finger hammer-ons (6 reps x each pair of fingers. Trills: 1 for each pair. Always going 6th to 1st and back to 6th. It works as magic, stamina, strength, accuracy, coordination. I will never stop doing this.

I was so frustrated with my left hand technique and my technique overall but this exercise put it all on another level in a few days. DO IT! Its really worth it. I work with all the combinations mentioned and do them backwards as well. Just mess around with these exercises for 15 Minutes a Day and you REALLY gonna get improvement if you have weak fingers and hands like i do. And also do some shoulder and arm exercies and some stretching maybe to get more relaxed and less tensed. the whole body play a role in your guitar playing. So do some exercise to feel the difference between tension and relaxation.

I've been playing 20 years and I'm self taught, but I've always had trouble expressing my approach to others (with me making up my own exercises as well) in a way that they can relate. You're great at covering all the bases quickly in where you ARE at guitar and where you SHOULD be. I also see some similarities in the exercises we both do for finger strength and speed.

I have been doing this for years after figuring out exercises on my own. I usually go through this entire series of exercises as warm-ups that include these and about a dozen more exercises, including every combination/variation of them. I highly recommend these exercises, they will be the reason why you can easily physically play anything with very little effort. You get what you give... When you put in the work, you get the results.

One "trick" or whatever you could do i found helps with strength, i was lucky enough to have a 12 string passed down to me when i was learning how to play, so if you can afford a cheap 12 string i feel it can really give you kinda a steroid boost to your finger strength, also if you get comfortable on a 12 string 6 string is ez pz. Awesome vids btw i dig your mellow teaching style and your "bad habits" vid helped me realize alot of things i needed to work on. Keep it up brother.

I tried playing like that recently just to try it out and it's much more difficult in my opinion. I like to wear my strap relatively tight, keeping my guitar's body around the level of my chest area... I prefer this because I usually practice sitting down and that's where my guitar sits when I'm sitting down.. PS: I play an archtop guitar.. I don't own an electric but when I play one, it's not as high up as my archtop

another way to strengthen he living heck out of your hand (if you've been playing for a couple months and know the pentatonic scale and how to improvise okayish) is if you play electric guitar a lot and you have an acoustic lying around just play everything you normally would on an electric on an acoustic for a week. Don't touch your electric guitar no matter how bad you want to just acoustic for a week the first time I did this at the end of the week my Les Paul felt like it had loose rubber bands for strings

*Finger Strength is RED HERRING.* The fingers are operated by the tendons in your forearm (not hand), and they are in fact strong enough to play guitar since you were 3 years old. You don't need to develop finger strength.Grip your pinky fingers against each other and pull hard. You will see that you can easily exert high tension and the pinkys can handle it. The issue is reactionary tension. For example when you use your index finger, your pinky finger tenses as a result, even though you are not using. Ring and pinky are notoriously hard to use independently which is purely to a result of nerve anatomy in the hands. They need to be trained, not for strength, but independence. Categorically refuse the use of any finger strengthening gadgets. Further more, most of the fretting force should not come from the finger (tendons in the forearm) but is transferred from the weight of the arm into the fret. This is the correct approach to playing guitar.

Not sure if I’m on to something here or not but.. there is an additional technique happening here. As you start fretting the low strings your fingers flatten out. I believe this is automatic for you because you are skilled in muting. Something I am not skilled in. I push my wrist forward to continue using the tip of my finger. I believe I need to develop this technique. Am I on to something or off base?

Question on the hammer exercises. Are you picking the string once for the initial note and the hammer? Or once for each fret? Looks like you still pick once for each and not just letting the hammer ring out on the first pick. Thanks.

H isubbed! I haven't touched guitar or any instryment like in 7 years.. and now ready to go back to it.. really try to learn techiques to make it better/easier for me to play and your videos helps alot. Im left handed and when I started my father buyed me right handed guitar and I learned with that.. My picking feel really weird for me all the time and I more use whole arm than wrist.. :D And I have been 5 years before break and really never got picking working how I really wanted.. Any tips how make my hand more relaxed? I tryed left haned guitar but I really cant play that AT ALL.

Awesome video! My problem is that my pinky keeps locking up and I'm struggling to keep it kind of curled like the other fingers. In tips or suggestions?

I'm so glad I found you on KZread. I'm learning so much so thank you, I have two questions though. While you are doing these exercises if you make a mistake would you recommend starting over from scratch or take note of your mistake but continue on and then repeat? My second question is more situational. Currently I am stuck in a hospital bed recovering from surgery/injury. After lying down for the better part of a year I'm allowed to sit up in bed but not at the edge. What is the best way to hold a guitar while sitting with my legs straight out? I know the short answer is "what's comfortable" but is their a way that is constructive for learning. Thanks so much!

I usually just continue on. Man that’s a special circumstance. I think if I were in a hospital bed I’d lean back a bit and hold my guitar like I do standing up. Benefit will be once you’re ready for the stage you’ll be comfortable. Heal well my friend.

Thanks so much for your response. I have started utilizing the hospital bed and putting the head up but not completely. Sorry to mix different videos in this response but I just viewed your standing up vs. sitting down. When I finally do get off bed rest I'll use a wheelchair to get around. I've been using a chair about 22 years now so I'm comfortable with it but would you be able to do a video on playing guitar while sitting down? If not (because you don't want people to get into that habit unless they need to) are there any pointers you would have for me when I am using my chair? I didn't mention it before and why I wrote to you in the first place is when I was sitting with my legs straight out it was far from comfortable plus I am using an Epiphone SG G-400 Pro which is a fret or two longer than what I played before Squire Affinity. I practice more on my SG because I feel if I can learn on and play a more difficult guitar I can play any guitar Thanks again. Oh by the way I practiced Jiu Jitsu also while back in college. I was the only student who used a wheelchair that either myself or sensei knew about at the time.
