The first Double Dragon arcade game is one of my favourite side-scrolling brawlers of all time, and its sequel, isn't half bad either. Like it's parent, Double Dragon II received conversions to just about every computer and console available at the time, including the PC Engine CD, a far more niche format. Arriving roughly four years after the coin-op, it's pretty late to the party, with Double Dragon 3 already launching in 1991.
Right off the bat, it's worth noting that nothing has changed significantly in terms of overall design. You move around the screen, duffing up bad guys and gals with fists, feet, plus assorted weapons that include a shovel, chain whips, and a steel wrecking ball. However, this isn't really a conversion of the arcade, more an amalgamation of features from other DD II ports released over the years. The art style is closer to Super Double Dragon on the SNES, although many of the character designs have been taken from the NES port. Levels are also redesigned, also borrowing heavily from the NES, albeit with the advantages of a 16-bit colour palette to give the environmental art and backgrounds an overhaul.
The other notable feature of this particular port are the anime-style cutscenes and audio dialogue, which break up each of the game levels. Sadly, there's no English dub or subtitles available, but I would guess most folks already know the game's backstory via the arcade and other media coverage. These scenes are almost certainly part of the game data, given the absence of noise an macro-blocking that would plague any actual FMV from this era. I assume the CD is actually hosting Redbook audio for music and dialogue, rather than any video.
Overall, the PC Engine CD version of Double Dragon II is a competent beat 'em up; it looks cool, plays well, and the cutscenes at least differentiate this from all the other versions out there. That said, it feels a little behind the curve, given that even the cartridge-based Sega Genesis and SNES consoles both feature games which exceed this in presentation and technical nuance, without the need for an expensive CD drive; I would argue Streets of Rage 2 and 3 are better brawlers, and Super Double Dragon does everything this does and more. I think most people who play this will have a good time, but the niche format and lack of standout features means it struggles against the competition.

I don't care what other people think, this is the best version of Double Dragon II and this is the canon ending.
Double Dragon is still one of my favorite beat'em ups of all time and this one is pretty unique because of its anime style cutscenes and the soundtrack which is solid for its own right. Still I prefer Super Double Dragon and Double Dragon Advance as the more superior entries imo.

@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Arc System Works Announces Ports for Double Dragon Advance, Super Double Dragon also features the original Double Dragon, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones, and Double Dragon IV games launch for Switch, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC on November 9 isn't that awesome.
Double dragon is the reason I play video games still to this day at 47. This version and the one on the Brazilian zeeboo console (not sure if that's correct) are the only two versions I'm yet to play.

@@mcbfilms22 What are you using to emulate if I may ask. I fooled around slightly with emulation with the mini versions of the NES SNES Genesis and turbo graphics 16. Can't complain to 720p however the lag is too much. What I've come to find though is I need original equipment on a CRT to get the results I'm looking for. Emulation with these newer high-def monitors generally produce noticeable lag which kills it for me.
Loved the dynamic entry theme of Billy and Jimmy crashing the hold-up of the villains. They'd also done a nice arrangement of the theme at the end. For "River City Girls 2" Megan Mcduffee did "Marion," which was a theme for Marian (who'd been given an Amazon Makeover) who was a Stage Boss due to a mind-warp spell.
I love this on the NES. If you put punch and kick on turbo, you can just hyper knee blast through the whole game.
I love my PC-Engine mini but wish it would have included this game. It had the 16-Bit version of Ninja Gaiden but not including this was a missed opportunity since the NES Classic/Famicom mini included both games.

Heavily modeled after the NES version, and the anime cutscenes got thrown in for good measure. Loved this.
Does this game have the spinning cyclone, hyper upper cut, and hyper knee moves or the elbow smash or jumping side kick of the arcade version?

Yeah, it's pretty much an NES ports with notable changes like Level 2's layout, Levels 4 and 5 being swapped, and Level 8 featuring a Machine Gun Willy lookalike. Some parts and bosses are also missing like the Ninjas and the Tank in the forest. You also have inconsistencies between the In-Game and Cutscene designs as the In-Game ones are notably more plain, and the Final Boss is the most glaring one to me. Not feeling the new music either, as I'd prefer to hear arrangements of the original arcade and NES tracks.
