You couldn't walk into an arcade in the 80s and not find Double Dragon or its sequel Double Dragon II The Revenge, even if the second game didn't quite hit the mark like the original. Fair to say the old warning if it ain't broke don't fix it and in Double Dragon II's case Technos Japan should have listened, reverting the controls to play more like Renegade was a huge step back from the first game. Instead of punch and kick being two separate buttons like the first game, they went back to the dated left and right control system.
In many ways the second game could be seen as a remake of the original, as many of the stages follow the same pattern as the original. Not to mention the heavy reuse of assets that can be seen in the game. Newer and larger character sprites over the original make for some impressive scenes. It was still very popular in arcades, far harder to one credit clear than the first game thanks to the elbow trick being removed, the new spin kick was a cool and powerful move, but tricky to pull off as it required perfect timing..
Ported to many home consoles and computers at the time, the game made for NES is seen as a better title, if very different. While the Mega Drive port addressed the balancing problems and added in some extra sections. With the arrival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1989, Technos Japan just couldn't keep up with Konami and it's fair to say the flaws of Double Dragon II really came to light as gamers quickly moved on from the series. The infamous third arcade game, sadly went down in history for all the wrong reasons, but the series did return to form on SNES with Super / Return of Double Dragon.
The Arcade Archive version is the best release to date with spot on emulation, that gets the hardware slowdown correct, many unofficial emulators add in too much slowdown. According to Hamster the makers of the series the original Double Dragon is one of the top three sellers on the format, we suspect Double Dragon II isn't far behind! Fun run on the game we did before Christmas, Riven did the run and didn't care how many credits he used as this was a dry run with no practice.Note we edited out the blue title screen flash during the intro card at the very start of the video.
