    The fantastic thing is I just went to Lowe’s and spent $70+ on black iron pipes for my build. It’s probably close to 10 pounds for the hilt itself but I got wooden dowels for either side and now I’m going to find glow in the dark red paint and make it into a hanging prop

    If you draw a coloured ring around the circumference of the top and bottom of the pvc, separate the colour from the pvc with two more coloured rings above and below the original rings and with a bit of really simple blender magic, you've got a realistic motion tracked light saber that looks just like the films :)

    Hey there, If you are still making props (only discovered you today) there is a handy tip for making worn metal with spray paint which is the plastic bag technique there you put on a coat of metallic spray and then when you spray some black on, you then dab in with a plastic bag and it creates a worn metal look, If you watch Cine-fix Homemade tutorials (preferably the Armored Batman and Kylo Ren one) they show this technique being used

    Is it not awkward, being a smaller diameter for the center section? Would think that the grip area would be right where the diameter steps down for the center, making it a little awkward.

    +Scott S Hello, thank you for watching. I was at Home Depot today and stopped by the PVC section. The best thing I could come up with on the fly is: 2 x 3/4" compression couplings, 2 x 1 & 1/4" PVC couplings, and about 6-8 inches of 1 & 1/4 PVC pipe for the grip. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a clean fit. If you have a rotary tool or some other sanding device, you'll need to remove the grooves on the inside part of the 3/4" compression coupling, then it will slide in to the 1 & 1/4" PVC coupling. Epoxy all the connections and you should be good to go. Here is a photo for reference: goo.gl/TgnDUl

    Question…if I downsize everything by 1/4”, will this design process still work? I feel the current hilt after it was completed was a little too big for my hands, and it’s pretty heavy for a prop IMO. Downsizing should cut the weight slightly.

  • @HappyTrooperDotCom

    @HappyTrooperDotCom

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Reece Vince I would recommend having 2 different types of blades. One long blade to simulate the double blade saber, and the second blade can be a little shorter...only coming out of one side of the hilt. If you only compress one side of the PVC blade, it will be wobbly inside the hilt. If you extend the blade all the way down to the end of the hilt, it will be secure at both sides. When going for the single blade look, use the shorter PVC blade, and don't let the blade extend out of one end. PVC pipe is relatively inexpensive. I think 3/4" is only about 3-4$ for 10 feet. If you buy 2, you are still under 10 bucks :-)

Actors use a prop like this and the effects team ads the blade in post-production. This prop is useful if you are shooting your own Star Wars photos/videos and using Photoshop (for photos) or After Effects (for videos). Check out this photo from Episode 1 1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ck9Gbbyh88/UWhrm1UM9gI/AAAAAAAAL7Q/HPhdN3zFOY4/s640/351da1a9d41bc4cca1162d8f7386dfa9.jpg

    HappyTrooper Appreciate that. You videos are the best for simplicity yet conciseness. I'm working on my next one (first being the prototype) using black piping - save a paint job. Will track the progress on my IG

    HappyTrooper nice build man! My friend is working on a lightsaber build for me, and it might go through a few iterations before the final build gets done. From your experience, what size should my staff be in inches? I'm 5'11", and I'd like to have a staff catered to my size. Thanks for showing how this is done, and may the force be with you! 😊👍
