...9:08 - 9:29.... My absolute favorite "Dorinda era." She was literally somewhere within Karen's vicinity. LOL while she may not be near this in 2021, but when she's well-rested...maaaannn she can let loose! LOL I always wind up reminding Alto soloists who may try covering her material to NOT be fooled by the "RASP factor." Sometimes you don't realize just how HIGH she is until you try it out aloud.

@@Jay2k2323 Voice types aren't made to put you in a box. Twinkie is definitely a higher soprano, but to say sopranos can't do low notes if their voices aren't on the deeper side is false. Plus her lower registration isn't as strong as you think; it still lacks some core. Don't get me wrong her lows are great, but it could be a little better.

Does anyone know how Dorinda developed such a rasp in her voice? Especially since as a young singer she didn't seem to have that... just wondering

Her rasp became present due to a few things. 1. Oversinging: Let's face it the TCS have been booked since the late 70's. Everytime Dorinda performed she always gave it her all whether in good or bad health. Not to mention she was also recording vocally demanding songs for YEARS! So, she never really received any proper rest. 2. Technique: If you notice all the sisters (besides Dorinda) in their prime had a distinct way they went about singing. The other sisters preferred ease that's why every single one of them sung either lightly or started mixing. Dorinda never really switched things up, she just went for it. So, she continued to put excess tension on her voice by squeezing to get up there. 3. Development: Dorinda never really took the time out to strengthen and develop her voice as a whole. If we look at another "raspy" vocalist (Kim Burrell) we'll see that her voice is developed. When I say developed, I mean a strong well rounded voice from top to bottom. Kim has some very nice lows, good mids, and fantastic highs. Dorinda's lows are weak, mids are okay, and highs are inconsistent. So, with that being said all these things contributed to Dorinda's vocal damage.

@@vivifiedvocals4470 I'm sorry this explanation is laughable. If you didn't know, you could've just said that or nothing at all. It's okay to just be a fan, if you even are because it's doesn't quite seem like it from that comment. 😂 If I'm not mistaken, I do believe Dorinda had some type of throat surgery years ago. Wonder why that wasn't mentioned. Oh, because you didn't know? That's why you should've just left this question alone. 🙄😂

@@jeannoire5250 she had throat surgery around the time of there very first album in 1973 and u can hear it all on the album . Go listen to the original version of if you can’t take it. She couldn’t hit all the notes so Karen did the TO SEE HIS FACE part when it was actually supposed to be her. Her voice had healed from then because from then up until the mid 90s it was very clear she developed a slight rasp but her tone was still clear she really got that rasp around 95 and 96. His explanation is coming from somebody who knows the human voice not from fan fiction.

@@_mu8938 Also... All the sisters (besides Dorinda) have good chest voices. Believe it or not, but Karen can talk in the 2nd octave and Jacky has been holding down tenor with her low C#'s and D's for years. They choose not to show this side of their voices because you know gospel really "lifts you up" not "bring you down" if you catch my drift.
