Laura's tutorial on how to repair DOOR THAT WON'T CLOSE:
• DOOR WON'T CLOSE! | 20...
Hey Y'all! Today Laura is back with PART 1 of a series on how to repair an Extended Cab Rear Door on a Ford F150 (This repair can be done on the following year models: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, & 2008). In this video, Laura shows the step-by-step process on how to fix a door that doesn't open. This problem happens when the gears inside break apart, keeping the door latches locked in the 'closed' position. Thanks for watching! Hope you found this video helpful. This was just what I needed. My 04 lost the right side door a couple years ago, which was terrific when we were moving, had to load everything in on the drivers side - well a couple months ago, that one stuck too. That one always required a mighty yank to get it to open, but even that didn't work. I already knew about the plastic pieces breaking, but just kept putting it off and finally got my two sets of the replacement parts - had to go to 5 different Autozone stores to find two sets. Anyway, I followed your instructions to get the panels off and get the doors open which was a real leap forward. Then I got sidetracked two more weeks, and finally tackled the passenger side door this past Friday. I didn't notice that one of the retainers was different from the other three - so you saved me some fooling around there. It was difficult to slide the new parts over the cable insulation. I did all but the bottom one with brute force, that would simply wouldn't budge past about halfway, including the old WD40 trick. To the rescue was my trusty torch cigar lighter. My wife rigged up a socket and ratchet to hold the big end, I pushed with some good pliers on the cable and torched the middle for about 3 seconds and it slipped right on. So I again followed the video to put it back together, not trusting my memory from 2 weeks ago. I am 66 years old after all. I did want to mention - I think somebody else mentioned too, the bolt heads that hold the lower large door panel on were 6mm on my 04, perhaps this was changed. And the single bolt behind the window control panel was 10mm not 8mm. The thing that had me worried after taking it apart was getting to the bottom latch - again I stopped watching the video because I didn't have the parts yet. Never would have guessed that there were three more torx bolts from underneath. So my passenger side door is done and works better than it ever did. The driver side is all apart, but the cable popped out of the latch mechanism so I will need to figure out how to pop the latch without it, or string it back in to manually pull it. At least I know what it looks like now. Once I get that door popped open, it should only take me about an hour to finish the job. I love youtube. I replaced the passenger side front door window regulator on this truck a few years ago thanks to a youtube video, I did the job for $94 including the part. The parts for this latch fix cost $12.99 a set at Autozone once I found them. I also watched a great video on drywall finishing back about 12 years ago. My wife and I finished our garage beautifully, having never done it before. I've seen "pro" jobs that looked much worse. I've always believed never pay anybody to do what I can do myself, and I'll keep being a DIY guy until my arms and legs don't move anymore. Thanks again for the outstanding video!
Thanks so much for your help!! My doors haven't been working for a few years now and I decided to tackle the job after watching your video over and over. I had purchased the metal pieces separately and had a hard time getting them just right - so I decided to purchase the entire wire piece on Amazon for $ 35.00. I am glad to say it is working and now to my other door which should be easier. Thanks again!!!

Thank you very much. Your video was a lot of help. You made it simple to follow along and explained everything to perfection.
Outstanding video. This is the best lesson I have seen on this mechanical issue pertaining to a Ford F-150...particularly because the professor has a methodological way of showing you how to open the stuck door and how to replace the broken pieces in a logical way. Not only is she a great mechanic but gorgeous as well. My wife loved the kiddy cats as part the lesson plan. Kudos to you.

Great video! As others have mentioned, the 9 latch tork screws are t27, not 25 or 26.. Definitely heat them with a torch (mildly) and they come right out. Also, the plasticoated cable ends that slip into the new pieces need some light sanding/grinding to smooth the indentations from the broken adapters. This makes installing the new ones very easy. The plastic cover just peels slowly away from the door with a little patience - no need to cut it away. Thanks so much for taking the time to create this.

I did the opposite... I was able to crank the torx screws off without much trouble, I saved the torch to slide that one last retainer on the bottom cable! I didn't even look at what number torx it was, I just got lucky on the first one I pulled out!

so, a year or so later, this video is still helping people or at least me. I am very vehicle challenged. I did not want to spend the money going to an auto shop. I have a 2008 F150. Both back doors stopped working at almost the same time. One was completely not working; the other, I had to push in, pull the handle and pull the door. I decided to fix them, bought the same thing you did for the doors. I watched your video and was able to complete the task. However, it took me almost 3 1/2 hours, it took forever for me to get the metal all the on the cable and removing the old stuff from the cable. I had 2 bolts left over, I watched the video again and found where each one went. The one behind the window control. thank you so much for the DIY.

While the video is done well and seems to show how easy and successful using the aluminum grommets can be I had a whole other experience. If you don’t get the tension right in each place where the grommets go it’s not easy getting the grommets back out and making the adjustments to make them work. And my experience was it was almost impossible and I had to give up on this method. I ordered the replacement assembly for each door which runs around $60 for both of them and all you have to do is simply replace them. Easy, effective and no guesswork required with the process. And a lot less work and hassle. So if you want to do like this video shows be prepared as it may not go exactly as planned and there’s an easier but yes a little more costly way but it is worth it to me!

You're right, this is a good point! The metal replacement grommets & tension overall can be difficult to adjust. We have a video on this same Ext. cab Rear Door issue using the replacement assembly part you're talking about: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ip-bxc5-g7jMdM4.html

for a year the passenger side rear door could not be opened. The first couple videos i found were intimidating to attempt a DIY repair. So I didn't do anything. two days ago the driver side rear door suddenly would not open. Found this video, ordered the parts and received them today. Following your video was my next step and the first door now WORKS! Thank you for such a well made "how to video". Two items in you video were different for my 2005 F150: 1) The torque for mine was a T27. Trying the T25 first almost worked, but damaged the screw slots. 2) The screw behind the window switch was a 10mm. That was no big deal. Thanks again for a super guide. PS> what happened to your right thumb... noticed the band-aid. lol 😄 👍

Hi Steve, there is a link in the video description. Click that link and it should take you to the parts you need.
Great video. The only hang up I had was the bottom part of the door/wire. The wire came loose (bc that was obviously where the plastic piece broke) so I couldn’t just pull the wire to release it. However, since I was having to replace BOTH doors at the same time, bc they broke within one day of each other, I moved to the other door, took it apart and was able to open it and look at the piece to figure out how to open the 1st door. The tension issue was a PITA as well on one of the doors. Thanks for the lesson!

Thank you this helped a bunch! Even after fiddling I couldn't get it to reliably open. Sometimes the hinge wouldn't engage. After poking about to understand how it all worked I figured out that there is a physical switch on the door jam. It puts the latch on either side of equilibrium. I.e. prevent the backdoor opening when the front is closed, but letting open when not. I prised this off and there was another of those adjustable tension clips. I set this to raise the rod up a couple of teeth, which fixed my problem. Hope that helps others.
