Doom Strategy Guide - Okuplok's Mastermind Prison
Ойындар
Deemed impossible to beat in one segment; the infamous slaughter-map of Okuplok is analyzed in this series. This tutorial explains several survival strategies for the second fight: the Mastermind Prison.
Okuplok is considered by many as the most difficult doom map ever created (even though the verdict on that is still up to debate). The map is heavily criticized for it's wildly varying levels of difficulty between each fight, together with a major health and armor starvation. This makes it extremely frustrating as a challenge, especially when you die to a difficult fight, after having cleared several easy (and borderline boring) fights for 3 hours. Some consider that the only reason why no one has single-segmented Okuplok yet, is because no one even wants to try. I wouldn't be surprised.
Regardless of the criticism, Okuplok is popular, and many players struggle with several of it's difficult fights. This video's purpose is to help those players with guidelines, strategies, statistics, and other useful tips. I did a thorough research of the known strategies for these fights, but in case I missed something: feel free to give your feedback in the comment section below. Any new information can help everyone else who's struggling!
All the footage for this video series was recorded on Ultra Violence difficulty.

I have to agree with Peter here: it's rare to find a Mastermind that is a threat and which you need to strategize against. Most of the time, at long range, she's "free in-fighting"; and at short range, she's 2 BFG rounds away from death with hardly any risk involved. Props to Okuplok for designing this fight, I guess. Among the several other "blunders" of this slaughter map, this fight is actually not poorly designed.
Man, this deserves to be a whole season for a TV show: 1. Imp staircase 2. Mastermind prison 3. Ar-church parish vs Cyberdemon pope 4. Mancubi-cliff™ 5. Caco-cyber red key canyon 6. Pinkie staircase ocean 7. Chaingunner bridge 8. Umbrella Corporation guarding BFG 9. Arch-vile cage condominium 10. Cyber-revs marble dead end 11. Fake spiral 12. Impaled man's red square 13. Firing squad's execution spot 14. Baron-toast with a Cyber-butter 15. Mancu-rev pyramid 16. Imp gray canyon 17. Spider duo's slime factory 18. Arch-vile stronghold 19. Spider-patra's pyramid 20. Revenant poison factory 21. Arch-vile prison 22. Revenant tapeworm 23. Lava prison camp 24. Four cages 25. Pinkie ocean under missile-rain 26. Arch-vile corridor barrack 27. Revenant corridor 28. Baron crusher corridor 29. Fake plus 30. Dirt death valley 31. Revenant mt. dirt 32. Two revenant eyes and a pinkie ocean 33. Blue key pinkie ocean 34. Final arch-vile attack

"Being locked in this arena is a blessing, not a curse. It keeps the previous monsters outside so you can focus on the monsters inside..." A lesson for life
Please do not abandon this series. I found your channel because of your analytics videos, and it warms my heart that you're still doing it.
11:33 "I stopped going pacifist and started shooting rockets - my performance increased substantially" - there's a phrase that can help with everyday problems! I was failing at school, so "I stopped going pacifist and started shooting rockets - my performance increased substantially" I was tired of cleaning my room, so "I stopped going pacifist and started shooting rockets - my performance increased substantially" I was struggling to finish the race, so "I stopped going pacifist and started shooting rockets - my performance increased substantially"

This is incredible. You're making the inaccessible accessible to us normies who can't prioritize hours of Doom practice on maps like this. Not only that, but you're giving us advanced strategies we can tweak to employ in less difficult WADs like AA and AV which makes them more enjoyable to play. Please please keep this series going!!

With the amount of fights this map has, this series is probably gonna end 5 years later 😄
This is the kind of Doom content that's missing on youtube. Because it requires a lot more work than playthroughs.
Ah, I started watching a guy play this map live, went to bed, slept the night, and woke up to find him still playing this map. Didn't realize the significance this map has in the community! Very cool!

You might want to consider numbering these videos so the noobs who don’t have okuplok memorized will know they’re watching in order. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series, this is a lot of fun to watch. I hope you’re planning a complete run through with no mid fight saves at the end of it all
This analysis series is badass. I'm super excited for the next videos! PS: also, nice usage of alien vendetta's Map04 midi at 2:10

Ah, the shooting strategy. One of the ancient, forbidden techniques of dooming
Phenomenal strategy guide! I just finished watching your saveless Okuplok run and man, was it some fun! Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, despite it being almost 6 hours long. But these strategy guides are something else. Excellently written and spoken, with all the relevant strategy advantages, disadvantages, threats or befenefits highlighted and explained. More of these please!
Little by little, you are making Okuplok go from 'god almighty this is insurmountable!' to 'pain in the ass but manageable'. With this second fight completed, it feels like starting to get things done. Must be the cleanup leaving a portion of the map devoid of demon life for once. Even if it's like 5% of the map, progress is progress. Not sure it was the impression you wanted to give, but it's what I got from the analysis. It's nice. And yea, I agree with facilitating the herding by wasting the middle barons. Slaughter gameplay is 9 times outta 10 a test of your mobility skills, and room to run around freely is your resource to budget. Letting enemies intrude on it a bad idea on the level of mis-managing your ammo killing lost souls instead of gunning for the PEs spawning them.
even though i can see the map's next challenges by watching a video or playing myself, i kinda want to wait for your videos just because they are so well presented and made
I love the data on different methods rather than just dropping a single strategy. Very useful. No idea how you're going to cover the platforming though. Even if I could handle the battles, I don't imagine I'll ever get better at that.
Ooooh, hot damn! Okuplok!!! And some music from Last Ninja in the intro!
Dude I absolutely love your strategy videos so far with Okupluk. The two main fights I am very curious to see how you approach them is the tight small room filled with probably over close to 100 Revs and a Cybie. Decino struggled with that room even in his second play through in which I am not shaming him. That room just literally looks impossible for me. Then the giant room filled with Hell Knights and probably close to 50 or more Cybies. The main danger of that room is the caged Cybies sniping at you. Also I would love to see you do breakdown strategies on Profane Promiseland especially in the outdoor arena with probably well over 300 Revs and Cacos on top of Spider Mamas, Mancubi, Imps, a few Cybies and Barons. That fight looks extremely hard as well just from watching Decino torture himself playing through that. By the way, as a disclaimer I'm not bashing on Decino at all. He is extremely intelligent when it comes to Doom and has insane skills.

Yeah those 2 fights are possibly the worst ones in Okuplok. However, one of them can be 🧀'ed...! 😉
it's funny to watch these okuplok videos despite the fact that i'll never ever gonna bother trying to beat this map
Monsters infighting really was one of the greatest innovations of Doom, along with everything else including its pitch-perfect difficulty balance that scales from super easy E1M1 to nightmares like Okuplok and Sunder.
"Commonly known as doors with health" LMAO it's so painfully true I've since watched a full playthrough of this level and now I'm super curious to see how you'll handle that god awful Revenant room, it looked near impossible but it also wouldn't surprise me if there's a particular strategy that makes it look easy. Another great analysis!
Loving this series so far! The amount of effort you put in these strategy guides really shows!
Man, this is divine. Absolutely divine. And those MIDI choices are *chef kiss*. Brilliant!
Probably some of my most favorite content you've made yet, REALLY looking forward to you going through all the fights...
Very impressive, a quality edited commitment to a niche of action, adrenaline, and strategy.

What if the 9 million missing subscribers are the subscribers you facerocketed along the way? Btw, this is awesome content. Replays of playthroughs are good, but they don't get as deep as this and don't really explain why certain tactics work in certain situations. It's really fun and informative to hear this, and I really hope you do this for some easier WADs also. Looking forward to more!
These are very thorough and entertaining
Another top quality video, thanks for all the content.
Love these videos :) Hopefully you'll continue the series with other hard maps.

I've never played Okuplok, but I'm really digging this strategy series!
This is a great idea for a series, I can't wait to see the rest of it xd
Fascinating series, I'm hooked! I love the comparison of strategies, really well done.
I can't explain how happy I am to see this I cant wait for the next video!
This is a great series thus far!
This is such a fantastic series! Please do more of this style of strategy guide.
I wonder how many of these vids will be in this series once it is over. I can't wait to watch every single one of them!
These are really good analysis of different strategies. Keep making these! Also, "Coincident vs Okuplok single save" when?
Thank you Coincident! As you advance on the strategies it is becoming apparent that the design of this map has had much more thinking put into it that we might have imagined happening on a slaughter map such as this one! Interesting to know and keep up the great content!
Genuinely enjoy your thorough breakdown and in depth analysis of this map, really great content
Loving these tutorials. I'll never bother torturing myself trying to play this insane map but watching these videos is still very interesting to see how it can be approached. Keep up the good work, Coin! 👍
Awesome series, Coincident! I hope you can make it all the way to the end with the same quality.
Wow, I'm looking forward to the next series so much! It seems to me that shooting stragegy is slightliy more survivable - shooting creates more space to maneuver, I think. And it's faster. But what's about saving ammo? Ok, my guess: Pacifist: 70%, 70 Shooting: 85%, 30 hmm, I missed in numbers but was correct survivability-wise
I'm never going to attempt this level myself,, but know it well from watching other runs. I'm really digging the breakdown and strategy explanations. Man, you've got a lot of content ahead of you from this map alone.
These videos are really cool. Im not one of those people crazy enough to try to beat it in one go, but with the help of these videos I might attempt the level with save states
I dont know this channel, but this serie is going to be OP. Please do more
Ok, you got a new sub just cause you used fire fight ost, and that's gas
I'm really enjoying these. I have soooo much catching up to do to be good at Doom haha.
oh so this is going to be a whole series. i love the discovery channel like intro
That intro caught me off guard... For a second I thought " Civvie with Okuplok.. what?" Xdd
As the kind of player who needs to IDCLIP the initial platforming section, it's incredibly impressive to see your skills in play, you make the impossible look not only achievable, but actually easy. I can't wait to see your strategy on the revenant corridor!
Thanks for the 2nd part!
This is top tier content, friendo
Ohhh this is a fun idea for a series!
6:19 Using different classic MIDIs from the history of Doom was a great idea, because here we get the image of Okuplok Slaughter Map if it were set to six or eight hours of the plinky 12-bar blues from The Focus
Great series.
Great video! I just saw most of your Okuplok video and now discovered this video. Just so you know. I was actually subscribed before, but unsubscribed because (to my own liking) there were too many "twitch shorts" from either Doom or other games. Personally I like more fleshed out videos like this, your commentated speedruns, and your plutonia with cards videos. Keep it up though, stuff like this is very entertaining!

Thanks for telling me, and welcome back. I have considered creating a "Coincident-clips" youtube channel, but the thought of re-uploading 500 video clips did not bode well for me...
I would say the Pacifist strategy is better I was surprised, you did such a good job convincing me it was better. The 'Doors With Health' nickname for the Baron of Hell is most appropriate of all on Hell Revealed, due to the fact that most of them are killed with Super Shotgun When this series ends, I can just see some total mad person complete this single segment
Coincident, this is a great topic for a video. I cant wait to see the next fight. I finished Okuplok but using cheats sometimes. Now I will try again without any cheat following your experience and avdices. Thanks a lot!!
We need more videos like this!
Never going to play Okuplok, ever. But I've greatly enjoyed this series so far.
Woohooo part 2 already let's gooooo!
The statistical correlation you found for doom survivability and channels made me sub❤ i play "new " doom (doom and aethernal) but I am old and slow. Remember good ol times running original doom and quale on a P100 32MB ram 512kB Vram 😅😅
Thank you, Coin
Oh I've been waiting for the followup to the first one
So...when are you going to do a live stream of you one-shotting this? Great videos, I really look forward to seeing the rest of these. This was a really fun map to watch decino do...both times ;). Around @11:50 when you showed the other clips I was getting the ptsd flash backs from when decino was playing lol. I may just have to watch these again (for the third time). Thank you.
I don't even play classic Doom, I'm just here to witness pure insanity
I’m super impressed you used a midi version of a track from Fire Fight, a game next to no one played but which was cool as hell (and could run entirely from cd and came with two copies for easy lan play!)
Very good video dood :)
Damn Civvie 11 needs to see the intro. Anyways great video.
Strategy 5: IDDQD Survivability - 100% Avg. Dmg - 0% I discovered this tactic the first time I ever played Doom, and it has allowed me to single sement most levels on a blind attempt. I consider myself a Doom god for this reason. Coincident, if you need anymore suggestions for tactics, I'd be happy to help, for a small fee.

Damn i love this series, but okuplok is way above my paygrade
You know it's a slaughtermap when your reaction to a boss monster is "thank god".
8:25 Ah, the Plutonia OST
Very useful video, indeed. After I stopped going pacifist and started shooting rockets my performance in bed improved dramatically!
I rewatched that section of my reality run and juggling 3 fights would definitely be too much to handle in real time. Also how to not loose subscribers, FFMpeg's lounorm and OBS's compressor are your friends.
Yes, I am quite the expert on the "monster hurting" strategy myself, I find that I use it on almost every Doom map that I play
This map is absolutely amazing to me. I beat it in godmode a long time ago, with each successive fight making me wonder how it was even possible to do legitimately, but by the end I was amazed because it **SEEMED** possible, but something you'd need to play a hundred times. Considering that even in god mode, i took two days, I felt like people would go crazy trying to beat this map. We're reaching a point where that will become reality. This is one of the last genuinely possible, stupidly difficult maps, that hasn't been done in a single run. THEN SOMEONE'S GONNA DO IT ON NIGHTMARE LOL
I'm really curious to see the next video in this series, because Archvile spam is something I have no idea how to deal with
You can just punch all the imps??! I was wondering last video what would be done about the imps and wow that cleanup this early is such a pro strat
There is a slight drawback from Shooting in that you get a much higher amount of revenant aggro, so you are constantly under fire there.
Marvelous
I subscribed because I want to see the complete rundown of this map.
Glad to hear again coincident with clothespin 😂. Regarding your strategies, i would prefer to use pacifist style; i like to combine a lot of pacifist strategies with attacking strategies and i save a lot of ammo (as i dont care about speedrunning and finishing the map quickly)
I think the best part about this series will be rooms getting names
shooting strat makes more sense to me. im not surprised it is safer in the end. in usual speedrun it really depends much on the ammo avaiable to pick either :)
