That crusher secret is legitimately one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life. I have played through Doom 1 and 2 countless times, and not only have I never seen that, I never even HEARD of that being a thing in any map! Better yet, I didn't even see it when I did map editing.

Genuinely didn't know the button in E1M8. Nice. Makes sense that it was added in one of the updates, they did a number of little tweaks to maps with those, such as how you can open up the entire wall into the courtyard in E1M1, which I think Romero did purely for deathmatch reasons. In some of the console ports of Doom, like the 32X one, E1M8 is modified to have a smaller courtyard and to instead have teleporters on the sides which take you back (they also erroneously use the weapon pickup sound lol). I was aware of the crusher in E2M4, and even that you could raise the floor, but the thing is that I never realized how I actually did this, likewise I never picked up on how to open the secret area behind you, which is done the same way, the inside walls of the crusher are shootable and will perform those actions, and you may very easily shoot those walls on accident, opening the secret without realizing that was why. Yet the floor raising is obscure. I think the reason this is easily missable is probably that once a sector becomes a crusher, it gets 'locked' to that functionality and it will not perform other actions such as being a lift or building a stair, or whatever, thus shooting that panel would do nothing when the crusher is already activated, it can only be activated again or deactivated by crusher stopping lines. So if you already started the crusher, you would never be able to raise the floor like that. The forgotten stimpack in v1.1 I imagine must be a leftover from an earlier iteration of the level. This area specifically changed a lot during development, it was even a secret area at one point, as indicated by the version seen in the A Visit To iD Software video. I played v1.666 of Doom 2 a lot as a kid, so when I finally got v1.9 much later, I was very surprised by the secret teleporter in MAP03. I stumbled upon the sealed off deathmatch exit in MAP07 as a kid too, and was hugely mystified by it for years, until seeing someone mention that it was for deathmatch, which was pretty obvious.

Indeed, vanilla Doom doesn't allow the floor to rise once the crusher has been activated... but it can be done in a modern port like GZDoom, though it looks weird (the crusher seems to sink into the raised floor).

I audibly shouted “holy ****” when I saw the crusher. Thank you lmao. Quality stuff. I think it’s important the bear in mind that many of these maps, especially in M2, came from the Doom alphas/betas and were started by Tom Hall, who had VERY different intentions for the gameplay.

Heh, when I found about the crusher, I had to immediately start the game up and check if it was real or some elaborate prank. And yeah, the original Doom Bible described something more similar to Doom 3, with people getting possessed, more realistic locations (E1M4 used to have locker rooms and showers in the Alphas), etc.

I consider myself a pretty big Doom aficionado, but I went nearly 30 years without knowing about the existence of an entire wing of E1M3 hidden behind a secret door--the one just past the blue key door. This was despite having access to map editors and cheats since nearly the very beginning. I had always either blown past that area or just taken the secret exit to E1M9. I have probably put tens of thousands of hours into this game, and it still took me casually watching somebody's UV-Max speedrun one day to see this area show up and leave me doing a double-take. For most people, I'm sure this area is nothing special, but for me, I was discovering original content for the first time in decades. At no point did I ask myself what the yellow key was for or if that rather large, prominent area on the map that nearly made up 1/6th of the whole level was for anything. On another note, I do find it funny that they would fix the blue key switch on E2M2, but then completely space out on the sequence break that allows you to go straight to the map exit by raising the bridge early despite being based on the _exact same strat._

Also Another interesting one is Map02 underhalls, in older versions in the room with the red key bars the other side also had bars that you could open like a door but were removed after version 1.666, apparently people didnt realise you could open them to progress the level?

I did some testing a while ago - in vanilla Doom, once the crusher has started moving, the floor cannot be raised at all... but in GZDoom, you can raise it, which looks a little awkward because the crusher seems to go through it. Ah yes, I showed the metal bars thing in another video - probably the one about "update gets you stuck", since it's focused on MAP02 and the changes that occurred in patch 1.8.

Hey I really liked the video. I knew about E1M8's button, and I vaguely remember using E2M4's crusher that way to kill the cacodemon in that room when I was a kid. If memory serves, I believe shooting the opposite wall will stop the crusher, but I never fully figured it out. What about the bridge secret in E4M2? It's a secret I've known about since the early 00's but I've never actually seen anybody else use it. If you don't know what I mean, in the yellow key room to the left of start, the eastern wall of the monster closet where three baron's come from in UV can be opened to reveal a switch that raises a bridge in the main room. The only good use I've found for it is when rocketing the caco's that spill out of the exit room. Other then that, it's kind of useless, but still a nice little secret I think most people don't know about.

Sometimes I imagine level-designers editing the levels in spite in later releases. Like the bars in MAP02 or the switch as you showed at the end of E1. If they wanted to better direct the player they would make bigger changes. Or they were just novice level-designers because it was such a new thing. Or John Romero edits the level so he can dunk on other players in DM more readily next time.

The E2M4 crusher was also unknown to me. The E2M2 was interesting detail, I didn't know, but haven't played such old version anyway. I didn't necessaarily know about some of the bugs like the teleport but makes totally sense, usually on certain editors if you add things and change the difficulty bits they appear, then the very next things you add will also use the last difficulty bits unless you remember to change it, so if you decided to place a teleport destination thing you might accidentally add it only for certain difficulties. That's a common editing mistake. In fact there was a totally breaking bug in Tnt Evilution MAP31 where the yellow key never appears and you can just not progreess. I thought it was on difficulty, but now I read on some wiki it was marked as multiplayer thing only. However there is a speedrunner trick to not need it anyway, haha :)

The original release of Doom 2 couldn’t be completed co-op as Map 29, the Living End, was missing the player 2, 3 and 4 start things, causing the game to crash when entering the level. On a different note, since teleporter destinations are Things and Things can have different locations based on difficulty level (see the position of the blue key change in The Crusher in Doom 2), I wonder if some map makers have changed where one teleports to based on difficulty?

And sure enough, it's possible and the floor stops rising somewhere in the middle, neat!

  • @AlexeiVoronin

    @AlexeiVoronin

    4 ай бұрын

Yup, it takes a bit of oldschool patching to get all possible versions. One of the easiest ways is to do this nowadays is to use a downgrade patch for vanilla Ultimate Doom that transforms it into ver 1.1 - from there, you can go pretty much anywhere... There is a specific patching order, though - 1.1 becomes 1.2, which then becomes 1.666, which can be further upgraded to 1.8. As for 1.9 - any of the previous versions can be updated into it, and then it can be upgraded to Ultimate Doom (id Soft made this patch freely available for everyone back in theday - something modern gaming companies probably wouldn't do).

When you are intruducing secret then don't say things like "I'm playing this game for 30 yers and know this recently by accident when I was watching..." - get to the point - "This is crusher, you can activate it by going through it - but when you shoot this piece of wall, then floor is activated!" I'm here for your content not for someone else :) Also showing switch in first secret from a few perspective - why? This is elevator that well...elevates nothing more nothing less. And you don't have to remind that you played this game for X years, you know this secret from source Y and for Z time etc :)

Also you are showing same secret as "lets look it again" - I could easly go to the part "look it again" to see entire secret. Also don't assume that everyone knows situation or map layout. I do, but someone younger or someone who don't remember it well - this person might not know about "you know this situation". Also avoid standing still and making introduction that is not about what you hgonna do next.

@@DeamonSorrow - Thanks, I am constantly trying to improve, so feedback is appreciated. Most of what I do is improvised, which is why it doesn't always go as smoothly as I would like it to. Think of it as a self-imposed challenge of sorts.

Tell me you are an idiot without telling me you are an idiot.. Seriously, this blatant disrespect disguised as constructive criticism is ridiculous. If you do not like how a creator makes his videos, how about you just don't watch it? Just because *you* are here for 'content only' hardly means that the person has to step behind because *you* would rather not have it any other way.

@@relyes I like to imagine I am engaging the viewer in a conversation, as if they are sitting in the same room with me - that's the core principle behind my style of making videos, and I know some people might not like it much. But that's okay - even the most legendary of KZreadrs have never been able to please everyone all at once :)

@@AlexeiVoronin This video style is great and showing us a solid 8 little-known DOOM map details in 18 minutes is perfectly concise. You averaged basically 2 minutes per tidbit + time allowance for the intro/outro. That's completely acceptable and a more 'natural' or conversational cadence like this feels more like you're here to tell us a cool story about your favourite game, not just dumping info on us. Also, what the fuck @ the E2M4 crusher. O_o
