I don't find it uncomfortable because the point is to embrace the lack of structure, to embrace the chaos of battle and violence, just like the gameplay. You're supposed to lose yourself in the chaos and zone out entirely; no anxiety, no control, just anger and violence and RIP AND TEAR.

Doom Eternal is set in three places: the ruins of an Earth that has been obliterated by demons in the 22nd century, Hell itself, and Argent D'nur, which where the cathedral you see in the image is from. D'nur is another realm where humans from thousands of years ago left our dimension and made a magitech kingdom in a different plane of existence.

I prefer the official version of this track, mastered by Mick himself. But this one is close enough, unlike many others. About that feeling that you got, of a futuristic setting, it's right on the money, actually. Doom since its inception in 1993 has always been a mixture of sci-fi and traditional hell aesthetics. It's set in the future and even demons themselves are full of cybernetic implants and such. It's not a coinsidence that there's a track in the 2016 OST called "Flesh & Metal". It's kinda what Doom is all about. And about the song structure, you have to bear in mind that in-game the soundtrack is dynamic, it changes according to what happens on screen at any given moment. Action ramps up and music ramps up with it. And Mick originally writes these soundtracks specifically for that purpose, so they weren't complete songs to begin with. They were written as dozens of little snippets that can freely flow in and out of each other. They become actual tracks a lot later, when the game is already out and Mick works on the OST separately.

I call it a musical rollercoaster, also there is an extra reason for why the songs end the way they do: looping. the best videogame soundtracks are very loopable, especially when the looping is almost imperceptible. For my favorite: BFG all the way.

The thing about the way the music is designed is that its made to reflect on how gameplay is going. Build ups lead into action which has the higher energy riffs and when you kill the last enemy it naturally winds down to the more ambient part of the song. This is my first video of yours so i dont know but if you havent already id recommend checking out the Killer Instinct ost Mick Gordon worked on as well. Once the DOOM saga is over anyways. (Edit. • @Asmith218

This is an arrangement not a song. Doom's music just like many games is a collection of musical sections called stems. The stems flow in and out of the arrangement depending on the part of the level to match the intensity of the action and what the player is doing. That is why it sounds so chaotic is that Mick Gordon is simply making a collage of those stems for the OST. There are no songs in the game since they vary as you play. Liam Triforce has a great overview of the music of doom from the first game through doom eternal.

There is one thing about komas mix of meathook that honestly makes me really dissapointed, because after the part with the chanting "KAR EN TUK" in this version it just goes back to the main riff and the same synth sound but in the gamerip it ends of with this absolutly increadible explosion of a high pitched synth over the main riff and it made me really upset to learn that komas mix didnt have that. But its still a great mix. And thats probably the only thing koma has done in their mixes that i didnt really agree with.

Yes to answer your question of time setting for Doom, it’s set in the future, to be more accurate the events of Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal in the games is in the 22nd century in the years 2160’s era. and as a counter point to what multiple people may have said about laser guns and swords, that’s not the case at all, the guns are very much hi-tech in the world but still mostly use things such as conventional means of firing like lead and gun powder, and some others more advanced also exist side by side, like plasma based projectile weapons and energy based and others are not of human and or of earthly origin and use a thing called Argent Energy which is central to the plot of the games. the image you see as back from in this song is part of one of the many places you visit in another world in another dimension, on a planet called Argent D’Nur and it’s part of a city called Taras Nabad. not of human origin. but still built by people from that world very human like and very technologically advanced.

Favourite Doom track from Mick? Good question! This was far from a no-brainer, but I'm but not really a chooser either. So, it was a tough decision for me. - 2016; either "Rust, Dust & Guts", "Authorisation; Olivia Pierce" or "Residual". - Eternal; "Hell on Earth" is definitely up there, but I also love the "Urdak"-related material. Makes me wonder what you'll think of the soundtrack from the Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods DLC? (Unfortunately, not composed by Mick Gordon. But Andrew Hulshult & David Levy did a phenomenal job with it regardless!)
