When I was growing up we considered good music like this normal. Back then, it was expected that a musician would have talent. I'ts a joy to see younger people discovering what I've known my entire life.

I personally prefer early 70's Doobie Brothers to late 70's. Black Water is my favorite song of theirs. Other good ones are Long Train Runnin' and China Grove to name a couple.

The one in the middle always had hair everywhere all thru his career. His name is the only one I remember, Michael McDonald. And he was everywhere during the doobie bro’s and there forever more. Thru the 70’s 80’s 90’s he was on every pop star rock band male or female as lead and backup literally you can recognize his voice because it’s so distinct. And, on this song he’s singing lead and playing the piano. That back and forth of the chords lead to new wave rock and then that lead to punk rock. Even tho’ it sounds like bubble gum music the doobies were the foundation of much rock to come.

The Doobies are incredible........their live music is special:Long Train Running, China Grove, Takin' it to the Streets. It's all good. Steely Dan would be a good listen to as well.

  • @DLCSTexas

Did you hear the chord progression. They just keep repeating it thru the background then they change keys and it’s keeps repeating. It never stops they just change keys while they’re singing the melodies and choral parts the music in the background plays that sub melody of back and forth chords.

The lead and most of the background vocals are sung by "the prisoner" in the middle, Michael McDonald, a former session singer and keyboard player who went on to have hits as a solo artist, in duets (notably alongside Patti LaBelle and the late James Ingram) and singing background for other acts.

The guy in the middle is the iconic Michael McDonald, one of the greatest voices of any time. One of my favorite songs ever-abt someone deluding themselves because they are so in love with, or in actuality, so enamored with someone else . Also, the great Don Henley from the Eagles sings background on this. Before sampling, looping, autotune and syths that do all the work with drum machines. You should see this live! I was lucky enough as a child with my parents and will never forget it!

In defense of Bros React: Read many sh*tty comments over the year I've been subbed. Yes,they get silly, little immature at times causing the collective eyerolls, cracking on old styles (everyone has done it)-but the reactions are equally tempered with mature observations, appreciations for talent. Many times Bros state some wise little lessons of life that catch me off guard as they're so young.Facts.* As far as the accents,I reduced play speed one notch down while they speak their reactions cos I couldn't understand but every 5th word.LOL.

Michael MacDonald in the center. Guy with hand over stache - Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (also in Spirit and hundreds of studio tracks), diagonally opposite (top right to us) is Patrick Simmons. I think Tom Johnston sat out this album with a bad stomach. And you're spot on - the band was not getting on well, going to more jazzy style. And there was a huge Michael-MacDonald-Killed-The-Doobies protest movement. (Of which I was proudly a part. Like MM, just didn't like him taking up time for new Doobies music.) Try "Long Train Runnin'" or "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)".
