Dont get tricked by fast hands (Wing Chun Advanced tips)

Спорт

Wing Chun is famous for its direct fast techniques. There are many ways to train speed and there are many elements to a good speed. Like any other attribute, speed relies on other attributes for it to become functional.
In this video, I will show you that speed is not just in the hands. Don’t get tricked by this concept of fast hands.
I will show you a simple, yet effective Wing Chun exercise that will help you improve your speed.
In the Martial Arts world, people usually think that hitting fast is a sign of good functional speed. This is actually not true and I’m going to show you why.
Practicing this solo training exercise will help you to get the results you need for this Wing Chun technique to be effective and to improve the speed of your movements.
I hope you enjoy this video. And, show some love by subscribing to our channel and also leaving your comment below. That won’t take you more than 1 minute and it helps us a lot to keep producing free content.

Great video. I've been doing Martial Arts for over 34 years and I can't think of anything I love more. There is a time and place for both the traditional and modern and both are useful and important. Too many people don't understand why things are done the way they are and they just do them. Understanding what you are doing and why it is done in that way is essential in understanding the difference between exercises, techniques and principals and how they can be used. Knowledge and understanding of why you do what you do are all too often overlooked because of the desire to advance as quickly as possible. Everyone is in too much of a hurry to get to their destination to enjoy the journey, in too much of a hurry to get into competition or get their black belt or whatever they are after that they don't take the time to relax, enjoy the learning process, ask questions and truly understand what they are doing, why it is done that way and how it can be used. Knowing the difference between exercises, techniques and principals is also important in understanding the difference between martial arts, combat sports and self defense and the different ways that you have to train for each as well as the different ways of thinking that each one requires. It is so important to clearly understand everything that you are taught to do and why in order to truly know what is useful in what situation and what to keep and what to throw away. Deciding that something could never work and throwing it away when it could be extremely valuable would be a great loss but if you don't understand something then it is easy to make that mistake. You will be able to perform better when you are comfortable with what you are doing and it is easier to feel comfortable with something when you understand it. You will be much better at what you do if you take the time to understand why you are doing it and how it helps you improve and grow. Take the time to understand what you do and you will enjoy the journey and arrive at your destination better prepared to take on whatever is waiting for you. You may also have a greater love and appreciation for what you have achieved. There is so much to love about martial arts whatever form it takes.

General rule for empty hand forms. Any terminology that ends with hand, palm, fist, or leg is usually a technique. Any terminology that has stance, sinking, breath, or Chinese medicine is usually an exercise. Fancy elaborate Chinese names that's an analogy, I would say a majority would be techniques. Finally anything slow motion is mainly internal exercise. There are exceptions to all these rules, but I think it's fairly accurate.

Agreed. TMA has a way of conditioning the body for certain movements in order to be able to pull off the technique and most times the conditioning has some technique in there but it’s not the totality of the technique or how it should be applied in fighting. Really basic is horse stance whether wc or other arts it helps strengthen the legs the abductors and improved flexibility in order to throw more powerful side kicks roundhouses or for takedowns and sweeps, gives you a great base but horse stance itself you can’t fight in it but i believe as you said if you can work from a weaker position and make that strong then you can definitely do it from a strong position

Hi Adam Ive studied Tong Long and one master told me how the Chinese training on stoned floors over years have worn done the stones into dips due to their stance . What you showed with the twists would have to be one of those movements .when your whole body uses Chi it is very powerful. We use the horse stance a lot and it is very hard to move an experienced practitioner.Really like your videos Wing Chun has much similarity to Southern Tong Long. Hard to find a good Wing Chun master where I live so videos have given me a lot. Thankyou 🇦🇺 Scott

I think the siu lim tau twisting exercise is essential for the proper punch in winch chun. But this isn’t because of speed. It’s because wing chun sacrifices power and punch length for quickness and we need to compensate by generating more body force in our punch.

Great tip on shifting. If you watch high level boxers with quick hands throwing combos in the pocket you will notice they do the same thing. One of the fastest hands in boxing was Sugar Ray Leonard and if you watch him fire off combos his hips were switching. Unlike many martial arts - like karate or TKD - where you are taught to always stand in a side profile stance to reduce target areas and hide the rear kick, a boxer doesn't worry about getting kicked in the groin or leg kicks so when they throw fast combos on the inside they stand slightly more square to the opponent, than a typical martial artist, and use hip shifting and loading up of their legs on the side of their punches to throw those blistering fast combos that boxers are renown for.

Muay Thai is famous for squaring up like Wing Chun and they have to worry about kicks, like all the time. Boxing squaring up has nothing to do with concerns about kicks but has everything to do with maximizing your strikes and that means equal distance for both hands. In a defensive/evasive position/maneuver boxers can opt to blade and jab.

Question about shifting. Do both of your feet move simultaneously or does one move first then the other moves a split second later? I'm currently training and as a beginner when we practice our shifting we move one foot first then the other almost a split second after. Once there is progression it becomes one movement. Do different schools/teachers teach shifting differently?

My mentality is this is my training. Now many people say oh I’m using traditional or the modern strikes and such. To me it’s all training. Different? Maybe. Effective? Depends on what you are using it for. When in a fight, you not gonna say ok I’m going to use this modern strike here but use a traditional strike when he comes at me. No. It’s just training at that point. You shouldn’t group your knowledge like that in a fight of any kind. Let a strike be a strike and a grab be a grab. I’m not saying completely abandon what they are, no. You should give credit when it’s due like when someone asks, is that traditional you can say yes. But in the end, we all have arms and legs. Don’t focus on titles. They have their place but don’t let it be dominant.

I am a scientific guy, but I do not think that a scientific, modern approach in martial arts is the only way... if decades (if not centuries) of "traditional" use of the body in fighting has worked well, specially in wing chun, there is not a valid reason to throw it out the window... if it works, it works, even if the ancient masters did not know even a bit of anatomy, muscular biochemical, etc. Simple like it seems.

This all looks great when you're going against an opponent that freezes after the first movement and attacks exactly the way you tell them to. smh Which is why Wing Chun is never used in full contact pro fights. We've seen many times what happens when a Wing Chun master who goes up against an MMA fighter. I'm confident the same result would happen against a proficient street fighter.

No traditional?? LOL! YES, there is traditional and it's way better than your system because it is COMPLETE, unlike your system! You know why? It's because your system is incomplete, missing crucial elements that makes it work properly, including the angled footwork and body rotation towards the attack, and the use of ALL TEN CONCEPTS! You know, the ten concepts, that are the guideline, or outline for the systems PROPER USE? It dictates the proper response to any attack! It also takes out ALL initial flaws and stiffness found in your system and ALL BOXING DERIVATIVES! It also gives this system AMAZING FLEXIBILITY that your system doesn't have because you only use six or seven concepts instead of ALL TEN AT ONCE, which adds flaws and stiffness. Bruce Lee himself even said that EXACT SAME STATEMENT, and he was right. But he was WRONG trying to add flawed, stiff and rigid boxing systems to his MODIFIED WING CHUN. That only added MORE flaws and stiffness to his SECOND-RATE SYSTEM! YOU CANNOT ADD ANYTHING THAT IS NOT WING CHUN TO YOUR WING CHUN, IT DESTROYS THIS GREAT SYSTEM, ADDING UNWANTED FLAWS AND STIFFNESS (this includes using the hook, which is not Wing Chun because of the outward elbow)! THE ONLY REASON HE WAS ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH IT WAS BECAUSE OF HIS SUPER HUMAN SPEED AND POWER, WHICH HE LEARNED FROM WING CHUN!! All boxing derivative systems have inherent flaws, such as overcommital of a response, having to torque up and go way past center (which causes an opening you can exploit), and putting some or all of the weight on the front leg, making it easy to unbalance him and break his structure, and the use of LINEAR (straight in) footwork, which leaves them (and you modified guys) vulnerable to the hook. And the use of techniques instead of ten concepts to dictate response also causes tension in the muscles that slows speed and response time, and causes fatigue. This is why, if you know the whole system in Wing Chun, you don't have to be in great shape, because the system is so efficient, you use very little energy. Another difference between both systems (the traditional and the modified) is the traditional is complete, and has Wing Chun grappling that uses Wing Chun's ten concepts, again making it more efficient and effective for the streets. Also, we are taught to watch the front elbow and knee, which moves first, telegraphing the attack. This is because the elbow and knee move at HALF SPEED to the hand or foot when doing a jab or front kick, and ONE QUARTER SPEED when doing a hook or side kick. If you watch the hand or foot, it is too fast and you won't react in time to catch it. If you watch the eyes, shoulder or waist, you can be fooled by a feint. That is another reason that makes traditional so much better than the modified version and why it works much better in the streets than modified does.

I disagree in so many things lol To be honest, you sound like someone that has never sparred. Look, for starters: not every boxing stance puts weight on their front leg and even when they do it doesn't mean that you can just unbalance them! I started Judo when i was 4 years old and let me tell you that there are ways to balance while being in many kinds of stances, those include the boxing ones. Bruce lee did not have super human speed or super human strength, he wasn't that great of a fighter either. He was a good performer and an awesome martial arts philosopher (at the time, because the stuff that he spoke about doesn't seem all that great when you look back on it), so saying that he only got away with modifying wing chun because he had super human capabilities is down right wrong Adding techniques from other arts doesn't mess up wing chun, that's super untrue in so many ways, like for example: A: if you add standing grappling techniques (like ones from Judo, Sambo or Taijiquan) you can just shift from Wing Chun to your grappling art when needed, which will not mess anything up B: Wing Chun doesn't incorporate ground fighting, so Judo or BJJ techniques will need to be used if you ever find yourself fighting on the ground. C: Jab punches are necessary (try to prove me wrong, i dare you) when fighting an skilled individual, and those are not present on Wing Chun (at least not on the style i practiced) so you'll need to take them from another martial art like Boxing. D: "you can find stiffness and flaws in all boxing derivatives" that's arguably untrue because every good boxer will tell you to not be stiff, so if you find a stiff boxer, it just meas that they need improving. While the "flaws" are just a weird concept, you can't posibly perform perfect attacks/moves/defenses, such things do not exist in any art. So you're saying that every move of your system is flawless and that there is no way of countering them? Is that it? Anyways, like i said, i'm mainly a Judoka but i have practiced many, many martial arts. Anyways, i do not know about the 10 concepts that you are mentioning so much. But the angled footwork is already found in martial srts like boxing lol, you even said that their footwork is direct which is is arguably wrong because not every boxer fights in the same way, did you see Muhammad Ali fighting with a direct footwork? No? Lol exactly, and that was why he was such a great boxer. The "body rotations towards the attack" principle is already found in many martial arts like Aikido, Judo, Boxing and System so yeah, you're super wrong in everything i can remember you said.

LMAO, if you ask anyone with common sense, they will tell you that looking at the knees or at the leg will yield the same effect when trying to react to a kick, which also means that looking at their elbows, arms and shoulders will also do the same. I also must disagree with the whole "watching the shoulders makes you fall for feints" thing. Because while watching the elbows during a (good) feint, you'll see the same motion of a real strike so you will fall for it anyways lmao. You're saying that your system allows you to not have tension in the muscles so you get faster reaction times and will generate less fatigue, and you know what? Doing that is legit!! But what you got wrong is that every other style does that same thing LOL. Look at any MMA or Boxing Gym, at any Karate dojo and you'll hear the instructors shouting "relax! You're too stiff" or "you're too tense! Relax that guard!" Being relaxed is not a secret, everybody knows it, so it is only natural that the other martial arts also train such thing. Now then, you said something about "having torque up and go way past center (which causes an opening you can exploit)" and you are once againt only right to a certain point. Creating torque is also present in traditional Wing Chun, you dummy!! And anyways, if you torque past center then that's because you over committed to a strike (which depending the case, might be a good thing to do) but if you are just throwing a "one, two" (jab, cross) then there is no reason to torque past center, making your statement fall once again in the "you just saw a bad boxer" category. And overcommital is not exactly a bad thing, it depends on the scenario and momment. You can't over commit to an attack if your opponent is just standing in a perfect posture because they will use your strenght agaisnt you and unbalance you! But if they are block too much or slowly backing away, it might be just the right thing to throw a over commited punch to go through their guard or to catch them while they move backwards!

@@jestfullgremblim8002 No you won't. Watching the front elbow and knee is the right way because the elbow and knee travel at half speed during a straight punch or kick, and one quarter speed during a hook or side kick, which allows you to see the attack coming, otherwise, if you watch the hand or foot, it will be too fast for you to catch up with. No, you won't see the same motion watching the shoulder because it gives you a fake attempt that will cause you to react. If you watch the elbow and knee, you will be able to catch up with it and the front won't be effective. WRONG!! ONLY WING CHUN TEACHES THE PRINCIPLES OF RELAXATION BEFORE HAND! All others that use the HORIZONTAL FIST are dislocating the arm from the shoulder socket, causing a major drop in power. This is why boxers need to torque up to get ANY power, and WING CHUN does not!! This is why we can produce power from ONE INCH AWAY, and boxers cannot! We don't need to torque up to make power because of the VERTICAL FIST, which keeps the arm in the socket, allowing for full power to flow down the arm to the fist. No other system uses this along with ten concepts, which takes out ALL INHERENT FLAWS FOUND IN ALL BOXING DERIVATIVE SYSTEMS!!! This means that there is no stiffness either, again, like All boxing derivative systems!! This is what makes TRADITIONAL WING CHUN (AND TRADITIONAL WING CHUN ONLY!!), THE BEST, AND MOST COMPLETE, SYSTEM ON THE PLANET! Over Committal is a bad thing because you are committing yourself to one move. This means you must finish the move, pull back the hands to the starting position, reset the stance, then throw the next technique. In WING CHUN, we NEVER over commit, always maintaining balance, so we can change our technique in mid-stride, without having to reset our hands and stance, something NO BOXING DERIVATIVE can do!! Again, this is one of MANY reasons why Traditional WING CHUN is superior to ALL OTHER SYSTEMS,!!

@@mightymeatmonsta bruh like i said, Wing Chun also teaches to torque up while punching. And relaxation is indeed taught in every other style, how can you say that that's wrong when that's the first thing that they teach in so many Karate styles? Lol Looking at the elbows yields the same result, stop saying nonsense and look it up! That's just common sense, do you really need something to be slow for you to react to it? Unless it is a small insect that moves super fast, you won't need it to be slow. If you already know what your opponent is gonna throw (which is usually unrealistic), you can react to it with the slightest move they make, not just by looking at the elbows. And remember that you can not look at the elbows and knees at the same time, you gotta learn to react without doing any of that. Please listen to yourself, you are never inmune to feints! If you are looking for a expecific move of my elbow, i can replicate that move but not throw any attack! And if you try to wait for the last minute to be sure that it is a real attack, you will not have enough time to defend agaisnt the attack. It literally doesn't make any sense! You will have the same reaction time no matter what part the *upper* body you look towards! Your explanation is "the hands will be too fast so you will not be able to catch up with them" but that is dumb, you don't need to know exactly what they're doing, you just need to react to it. That's exactly what you do while you look at the elbows, you dummy! As you are looking at the elbows, you aren't catching up to what their hands are actually doing, so you end up in the same situation. Stop saying nonsense and do your research
