i've been wringing myself trying to remember what other song donovan played these same notes in, and now i remember ;) it's legendary pink dots "i watch you in your tragic beauty"
Hi it's amazing to see this because I have been telling people about how when I was 18yrs old and having a holiday on Ios Donovan came and played in the harbour telling us he was making a film of his travels around the Med in his yacht. There was a nudist colony over the other side of the island and apparently lots of them put their clothes on and came down to be there. I didn't catch sight of myself or my firends in the video but we were there! I remember he got the audience to sing Twist and Shout while they were moving cameras around and it was supposed to be included...I guess it didn't make the cut. Thanks for posting it
Looking forward to this. In 1970 the Open Road album came my way by noticing it in my older brothers room. I was all about Cream, Hendrix and The Doors. The sophistication of the albums music left a lasting impression. Fast Forward to Los Angeles several decades later and I met Donovan at a CD store where he was signing posters for his new live release THE CLASSICS LIVE in 1991. He graciously signed the poster, ‘To Michael On The West Coast Waiting’ above the poster print of the famous song Susan On The West Coast Waiting upon my request. I mentioned the impact of discovering the Open Road fold-out LP in my brother’s room. He smiled. I emptied my Nikon camera of 35mm film documenting everything I could including the live songs afterwards. He had this powerful vibrato and sung from his diaphragm, I was mighty impressed. So I walked out in the brilliant Los Angeles sunshine with my treasured poster and new CD of The Classics. Right next door to the Music Plus CD Store was a new Framing Shop. I walked up to the counter and got a quote on a rather pricey frame, matte and glass custom order for the large poster. It hangs on the living room wall, to this day. None of this would have happened if not for the Open Road album of 1970. I would just absorb all the printed lyrics on white print on the large green background layout. The melodies so smooth and melodic. The bass and drums were mixed out front, which I loved since I was a studious bassist loving the Felix and Tom Dowd recordings of Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Donovan had a powerful band without question. Now to replay this video gem a second time. This is awesome. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story! ♥
My brother David Reid was the cameraman. He was telling me about climbing the mast of the yacht to get that speedboat shot! Not a bad job filming in the beautiful Greek islands.
I have deleted comments (from one user) accusing me of taking this from another channel, and will block anyone doing so in future. I am against taking things from others' channels without credit and have never done this, nor ever plagiarised a description. This video was taken from the DVD from the 'To Try For The Sun' boxset, and I edited It to amplify the sound. I can easily prove this is an original upload (from the video specs, and my editing files), and that any such accusations are wrong, so please stop.

@@j.e.6901 Yes, I agree, he remains too underrated. He should be considered one of THE great songwriters!

What a pleasure! I like it so much ! I pray for a peaceful and joyful life for all human on mother earth 💚
Wonderful. The first time I was in Ios was in 1976, absolutely wonderful. As I was walking down to Milopota beach there was a beautiful Barque anchored and someone said that it was Donovans. Who knows? However I fell in total love with Greece and the Islands. and later met Donovan in Paros Island where he was there to see his old friend Gypsy Dave who lived there making marble scuplture.
I’m in heaven listening to Donovan read The Road to Ithaca, starting at 29:10! And then he sings one of my favorites, the title song at, at 31:10. Absolute heaven!

That all the long-haried guys were weirdos.
Can never decide who mimicked who between Donovan and early Marc bolan. Donavon definitely changed by this time and became more tyrannosaurus rexroth hippy from his jazz folk start. Bolan by now was electric.
magic, thnx :)
can anyone post the lyrics and tabs for "Barabajagal Came To Blythe Fair" ? that would be fair...tankssssssssssssssssssss
I'll take this over "Reynoldo and Clara" any day.
During the song: The Garden, What is the other language Don sings in? I shiver every time I hear it.

Is this video DVD available to buy in the USA? Hope I can buy it here as it would cost a fortune to buy from Europe. Just love Donovan so much, since I was but a "young girl" of 14. So very long ago....

The film is on a DVD that's part of the CD boxset 'Try For The Sun: The Journey Of Donovan'. It's out of print, but you can find copies on Discogs. It might come up on eBay sometimes, too. Just make sure you get the version with the DVD - some promo versions don't have it.
My favourite song here is "Love Seed" 8:28. Did Gypsy Dave accompany Donovan on this trip? I thought I spotted him in some scenes but couldn't be sure.
Wait. you descended to the monastery at the summit? Doesn't not compute!

So sad to see that the only song from open road album they played was Riki tiki. I hate that song.

Back then you could do this with nothing but a whim now you would have to have money and the police would move you on and no way could you cross a border. Local racism suspicions would make it impossible.
