The dozens of times I've crossed Donner Pass, I always thought about this. Especially the time I got stuck there and 8 feet of snow covered my vehicle in a gas station parking lot on the Sac side on my way up, toward Reno. Everyone there was snowed in for 4 days straight. The store miraculously kept their doors open and they went around with law enforcement, firemen, Civil Air Patrol and rescuers making sure everyone was staying alive. Lord have mercy this movie brings it home what it was before cars!

I have Backpacked (in all 4-Seasons) all over the Sierra Nevada's for quite a number of years and can tell you, that even without Snow falling, or, on the ground, the terratory is very rugged and can be extreamly inhospitable to the unprepared. The tempratures can drop suddenly and thunderstorms can appear randomly. With Snow on the ground, within that rugged environment it is very slow going. Snowshoes are pretty much only effective on the flats...and there isn't much of it for the most part. The guy that got hurt here in the movie, very easy to do. All it takes is either a mis-step to twist an ankle or with snow on the ground you run the risk of stepping into a sink-hole and breaking a leg. The amount of calories one burns is unimaginable...replacing those calories is a constant effort, under the best of conditions. The wind can chill you to the bone. And, if you are wet from sweat, you better get dry as soon as possible or run the risk of Hypothermia within minutes. Couple all of this with the stress factor that these folks experienced and it is beyond imaginable...an Iron Will to Survive would be the only way out. Great Movie.

True. But that type of authenticity takes money, time and commitment from the actors for weight loss. Make-up only gets you to a certain point and CGI is expensive and sometimes quite impossible for this sort of thing. It all comes down to money I guess and I very much doubt that this movie had a huge budget.

Once hunger and exhaustion kick in in cold temperatures all you want to do is sleep and it's so difficult to wake yourself up if theirs nothing to eat just more hiking carrying your tent etc. I've only been in that situation on one trip with a m8 and we losed our dehydrated food somewhere along the root and thought we'd be OK and we were thanks to coffee n chocolate but it was still really tough not having a hot meal at the end of the day but coffee and a chocolate bar is more than these people had.

This is a good movie, but from what I've read, it isnt what happened at all!! They ate the dead, only 1 man was considered to have actually killed for it! There was no mention of the donner family what so ever! I only recognised a couple of names to! I was hoping for more on what the people at the actual camp had to go through.

I read "Patty Reed's Doll - The Story of the Donner Party". I was in despair for quite some time after that. As a child reading about another child, it was very vivid. I'm skipping the film... Just remembering that book is enough. 8 year old Patty Reed survived the Sierra Nevada crossing with the Donner Party. There's a huge beautiful lake named Donner Lake on the way to Lake Tahoe. Since I was raised in Sacramento I visited Sutter's Fort a few times where the actual little doll is. My sister was born at Sutter Memorial Hospital. Sutter was cruel to his Native American "workers". They were mistreated, and made to eat out of a trough. This was around the time Lincoln had freed the slaves!!! Sutter had to leave Sacramento because his karma hit straight as an arrow. The gold miners destroyed his property. He died in Pennsylvania.
