Donna Summer | The Life & Death of The Queen of Disco

Ойын-сауық

American singer, songwriter and actress Donna Adrian Gaines, known professionally as Donna Summer, was born on December 31, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 8, since she wasn’t old enough to join the choir, she got the opportunity to sing a solo one day. Some people started laughing when they saw her up at the front but, their jaws dropped immediately the minute the first note escaped her mouth. Donna admitted even she was shocked by her own talent. She also recounts that God spoke to her, telling her she was going to be famous.

Man that Bad Girls album!!! As a kid I use to stare at her albums, her image was so iconic. A shame the whole Disco backlash because her songs are timeless and groundbreaking and still being played and sampled today. Some people thought she was a sexy joke in the beginning then she proved she was a real artist and writer with a voice that could sing any type of music. Thanks for this profile of a pioneer who deserved more.

Nicole Sherman Late Ms. Donna Summer was not a such an underrated vocalist after all. She was very popular that time and was named as the Queen of Disco. She had many US and UK Top chart hits in the late 70's and early 80's. Also she had many platinum and gold certified albums including her most successful double album "Bad Girls" in 1979 which sold multi platinum in many countries. Its only after about 1984 that her commercial success started to go down, and that was very sad to see. Afterwards also she had comeback albums, because she did not give up and kept on recording. She was a true diva with that great voice and she was an unforgettable legend.

Donna Summer is criminally underrated as a vocalist. She deserves to be in the same sentence as Aretha, Gladys, Patti, and Chaka. The only reason is she was pigeon holed as a “disco” artist. Lucky for us, she is just a KZread or Spotify click away.

Donna's 1989 album "Another Place And Time" was completely glossed over in this piece. It produced her last top 10 and gold certified song on the Hot 100, a song called "This Time I Know It's For Real". It also failed to mention Donna winning the very first Grammy in the dance category in 1998. It was her fifth Grammy in total.

FYI: in 1967, a young Melba Moore and Donna Gaines(later known as Donna Summer) both auditioned for the same role in the Broadway musical HAIR. Both ladies were so good that, the producers decided to give Melba the Broadway role. Meanwhile, Donna was offered the same role with the touring company of HAIR, which led to her leaving for Germany and Europe.

I'm glad somebody said it. It's only when she died that I saw Essence, Ebony or even Jet magazine pay such elaborate retrospective homage to her. Growing up I did not see the consistent fanfare over her like I saw for many other high profile black artists. Even though she was a global superstar, I believe she endured some of the same unnecessary treatment as Whitney in her day re: her being a sell out. Had people checked their facts they would have known she was big overseas before she came to America with very diverse crowds.
